Usually halfway. Often a little less. If I'm mowing the lawn it's on full blast, though.

Since my video camera also functions as an mp3 player, you can imagine how loud it isn't at max. It might just be that all of my headphones suck or break after a few weeks

If I am walking down the campus avenue, I have it at almost 3/4th the way up. It's sort of my natural defense against people that might want to come up and talk to me about their latest revelations, or club activities or want my signatures for some kind of useless campaign. When I am on public transport thought I have it down to minimum.

Damn ninja'd.
I keep mine pretty loud but I've got nothing on my roommate. I can tell you what metal band he's listening to in his headphones through the wall.

I turn mine to 11.
EDIT: l2readb4posting

I usually wear the full-ear encompassing headphones (not those earbud things), so I don't usually have to turn it up to max to block everything else out.
That's my answer I guess, loud enough so that it blocks everything else out.

I'm not going to listen to my music so that some idiot yelling at his friends behind me is going to drown it out.

My headphones are usually put up 50% of the way unless i really like the song at the moment, then i put it up to like 70%. Sometimes i sway the volume to the beat, its funny.

I have mine generally 75%... Sometimes up to 85%...
I use it to drown out noise and listen to something good.
You can think of it this way: Loud enough so people say "Holy shit your music is really loud!" (I only listen with one ear, so I need it really loud to hear everything as much as I want to) But since it's only in one ear, I can hear the conversations going on around me. But when I'm in class I tend to turn it down towards 25%.
But when I'm really annoyed I listen to my metal on the bus with both earphones in and I turn it down to around 50%.
My music-listening habits are complicated.
[small]And I think everyone should hear the glory that is metal. (No, it's not all screaming an guitars. If that's what you think it is, you need a lesson in the metal subgenres.)[/small]

I use noise canceling head phones, and those ear plugs hurt like hell. So normally it's pretty loud (around the 90% mark) in volume. But sometimes the song is really loud so I turn it down, or the song is super low and I turn it up.

However, it just so happens my hearing is pretty awesome.

As loud as it will go without destroying the quality.

Unless I'm on a bus, and sometimes when I'm passing people, I don't know why. I think I'm embarrassed by something, or the off chance they might say something to me and I can't hear them.

Also the amount of phonecalls I miss because I can't hear it when I'm out is getting annoying, I must look well cool walking around with loud music and my shitty ringtone going at the same time though.

I have my iPod usually up to about half of the maximum on normal songs. I can't stand it any higher than that, since I like to preserve my ears and all.

Every time I get a new in iTunes I use the volume adjustment feature and put it up to +100% basically double how loud the song can be played. I then proceed to play it with my iPod on just about full.

Depends on what I'm listening to. I have to spend about 3 hours each day on the bus and subway, both of which tend to make a lot noise so I usually have them around the 16 to 18 range (out of 20) for any metal and maxed out for quieter music like classic rock, jazz, and the blues.

I listen to them medium-loud depending on how much other noise is around me, but since I have recently became paranoid about contract noise-induced hearing loss, I might not put the volume higher than medium.

I try to stick to around 25-30%, but at times I'll go to *gasp* 60% on the occasion when I'm really rockin' out.
Still, I have to wonder if there's any correlation between average volume and ear cleanliness. I probably over-clean my ears, but I am very prone to ear infections, and even just moisture built up from wearing ear buds drive me nuts.
