I personally have around 100 games (thats not an exaggeration) and have played both crappy games like Damnation and good games like Mass Effect and fully understand whats good and what isnt, but how many should you have (as a start) to understand gaming?

I really dont think theres any amount of games you can play that allows you to definatively decide whats "good" or otherwise. There are definately reasons why Mass Effect is generally better liked than Damnation; but I know for a fact that many very well informed people hated ME with a vengeance, and there's probably a few who loved Damnation.

Like any other form of media, its subjective even if we cant always understand why.

I don't know how many, I had around 50 on my Commadore 64, 200-300 on my Amiga 600+, and probably 200 on my PC(s).

I like what I like, and dislike what I dislike... It's subjective.

Erm, 3 really.
Such as an RPG, and FPS and some sort of sports game.
They should also be of decent quality, like a "Final Fantasy" for RPG, "Halo, CoD, Team Fortress 2" for and FPS and "Gran Turismo or Need for Speed" as a racing game, or a "FIFA" game for sport.

It also depends how many years that person has been playing games. Like if they've atleast experienced the evolution of the genre, like played an N64 or SNES and a couple of older consoles or games.

What's good and what isn't is subjective. You could have played a thousand games and have no more meaningful oppinion of a game than someone that started gaming a year ago.

As far as understanding gaming? That's not really much of a question. Are you talking game design, gaming history, skill... etc?

You don't need to play any games to understand gaming. You just need an open mind. Something the critics are usually lacking.

Aye, you could have all the games in the world but still know nothing about games.

I've had (family has had) around 400 games (most traded in or sold to friend) spanning from about 17 years ago. My personal collection right now is around 80.

I'm not sure what you mean by "understand" them. Like the control schemes? Personal taste? I'm kind of confused.

And who defines what's good and what isn't? I've played Enclave for the Xbox and majority of people didn't like it, but I did. Maybe Legacy of Kain fans dislike Blood Omen 2, but it's one of my favorite games. People even like Two Worlds, but it's one of the worst games I've ever played. I think that you mean "I know what games I like", rather than "understand what's good and what isn't."

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

/trollface

OT: I really don't understand what there is to understand? If you want to understand gaming as a concept, you don't even need to own or have played a game to "get it". To understand what's good and what's not, well, it comes down to what you like, so, one game I guess?

I'm not sure. I have around 200 total over all of my consoles and PC, and I think I get it pretty well. It also depends on how long you've been gaming.

I think you people are overthinking this. What I mean is that people loved MW2 a bit too much that it almost seemed fetishistic. To me it just looked like a generic FPS trying to live up to the glory of the first Modern Warfare. I was able to realize this because I PLAYED so many GAMES for so many years.

P.S. Shooting Russians was a double kick in the balls because after the first Modern Warfare made me shoot my guys I thought we were done with "lets go back to the glorious Cold War ERA!", but I guess shooting up and airport full of them is completely different

I don't really think that anyone totally understands gaming and if they say they are they are probably kidding themselves. If someone was trying to pass themselves off as an expert in all sorts of games then I would expect them to have played a lot more than one or two hundred, if only for a short while. Maybe in 1990 you would have been exceptional if you had a working knowledge of 100 games but not today.
