How many hours do I have to put into Dark Souls to unlock co-op?

My friend just bought Dark Souls and convinced me to because we were looking for a good co-op game to play.

Well, I've heard a lot about it being obscenely hard (even the Gamestop girl asked me if I was sure I wanted to buy it, lol) and the guide I'm reading says you have to beat bosses and get stones and whatever to unlock it. I don't want to put 7 hours into it just to unlock the co-op.

Is it super hard? Is it worth it?

You get the ability to coop after the second boss (about 15-50 mins depending how good you are :3). You will love the game, trust me when I say that. It is difficult but holy shit it's worth it.

If you count the tutorial boss then there is two that you have to kill before you get the white soapstone which you use to drop your summon sign so others can summon you. If its your first time playing you should very easily be able to make it there in under two hours. If I was to start up a new character I could be there in under twenty minutes while still taking my time.

... I think you should have done more research into the game before buying.

The thing with the co op is its not the traditional join/ host a lobby then co op times. You have to get a white soap stone to "leave" in the level. Another player (providing they are not hollow) may then see said mark and summon you to help with the level.

Basically you can't directly invite players into your game, you have to see the mark in order to summon people. The mark may be your firends or some other randomers. It does tell you who you will summon though. Its harder because theres no telling which server you will be put in, or that you will even end up in the same server.

On top of that there are various reasons why you will get booted from the hosts game: If you or they die, if they step through certain doorways or if they kill the level boss.

You can't even talk to your partner during the game. Only use gestures.

TLDR: This isn't really a co op game to play with friends. You can summon co op partners but its more suited to inviting random, disposable people. Its very much a single player game, with online elements.

Bar the co op thing. The game is fun and has a lot of depth if you can bare the difficulty -alone.

You get the white sign soapstone(which allows you to be summoned for co-op) by talking to solaire after defeating the taurus demon, also to summon help you need to be in human form.

Also which version of the game did you buy pc/360/ps3?

For a normal player you can probably bet the white soapstone within the first hour or so. Maybe 2 hours if youre really really bad.

I wouldnt call the game hard so much as it is unforgiving. The game works in such a way that you can roam wherever you want. So exploration is a huge thing. The difficulty comes from knowing how the game works, knowing your equipment, and knowing how enemies and bosses work. You dont go into a boss fight and just own them, more then likely you'll die a few times before you can kill them. Co-op makes it a bit easier though

Dark souls is not for the faint of heart though. If you dont like hard games it might not be for you but since you already have it try it out and see. By the time you get to blighttown you tend to know if its your kind of game or not. However because its so unforgiving finally beating a hard boss feels amazing, no other game makes me feel like that

Also if you have any questions feel free to ask us on here or hit up one of the wiki's. The dark souls community is pretty huge and we all like to help people out

Sorry to say this but I don't think darksouls is what you guys are looking for. Its a great game but its not really designed to played with a particular co op partner. It more like you going through the world and come across other players to pvp or fight together for a time and then go your separate ways again. The way the summoning system is set up it's probably going to be difficult to summon a particular person.

Dark souls definitely isn't for everyone yeah. A hardcore could rush through and get co-op capability in 10 minutes but it's going to take the average person a lot longer on their first playthrough, an hour is generous. (Your friend could however, plan ahead and get ready so you can summon him within 5-10 minutes of starting)

I made a video to help out newer gamers to dark souls, hopefully you'll know either

-this game is right for you or
-I made a terrible mistake
by time it's done lol
