Teachers like to mix things up by making you think outside the box. If the teacher is even half way intelligent, they can bring conventional norms and force you to change your views on them just based on a purely new way of thinking.

Your teacher sounds like a fool who just wanted any excuse to say that you're wrong and he is right. Unless they made the distinction of asking, say, instead of letters 'how many symbols are in the alphabet', which makes little sense if any but gives him at least a tiny bit of ground to stand on.
