how many players does dead island 'need'

so i'm very intersted in buying dead island and from many of the reviews ive seen it's only really a great game if played multiplayer much like borderlands but im not sure how many players you need to have a great experience so im asking just how many would create that

side note: i only have one friend i could play a large number of hours within a shortish period of time

Honestly, it works just fine as a single-player game. I found 2-3 to be the ideal. 3 is even getting a bit too far on the easy side; 4 was a complete cakewalk.

Yeah, 2 is the magic number. It's insanely fun with 2 people, and not a yawnfest of easiness.

I'm having fun playing solo. But I play at night in the dark so it adds to the fun. I'd play 2 player, just someone to watch your back.
