It cost me $1400, but that included the OS, monitor, mouse, and keyboard. So, more realistically, probably around $1100-1200 for my top-tier rig. You can make one that runs all games at medium settings for much cheaper (probably around $800, I really haven't looked into it).
That's what I'm looking towards too. I've been told that its better to build one, but I don't really know which parts are the best. (Plus, the ones on neweggs are pretty cheap from $500-to 800 bucks.
Built mine for about $1,100 Canadian or so 4.5 years ago. I've replaced the graphics card recently, and added some things like an additional hard drive in that time, but the basic system was that much and easily ran every game I own on high settings up until my graphics card died.
And that price was without too much waiting or shopping around for good deals. If you have the patience and can afford to get the parts together a bit later rather than sooner you can probably do it for less.

One good way to start educating yourself if you don't have friends who keep up on this sort of stuff is to take a look at build guides on various tech websites. Not just one, but several since they can all have different ideas about what to put in a system, and some just give bad advice sometimes. At the very least it offers a starting point of what you can expect for your price range, and some parts to do more research on.SUPA FRANKY said:

If you're tight on cash, you can still make a sweet system for $500-$600. Expect about $1000 if you want to get the best for you money before you start seeing diminishing returns. There is still something to be said for future-proofing your system, but you really can't argue with max settings on all games released now.

Kinda a shame I don't live in the US, could get my CPU and such over there on sale as my dad was working there at the time, now I'm stuck with Aussie prices on 2 560Tis and a 1000W PSU. Sure I don't NEED it, but I WANT it, and I do need an upgrade to play BF3 on Max settings.
This is of course going along the lines that you already have a PC that you can salvage things from. If you don't, it will cost a fair bit more to get a screen, case, PSU, Mouse&Keyboard, Sound Card ect. that you could easily just use an old PCs of instead.

Around $900 five-ish years ago. Starting to fall behind the curve but still runs most games brilliantly, I am extremely happy with it.
Cost me about $700, it would've been $600 but my dorm's mail system was really crappy and I found out they didn't send out my rebate form until like a week later so all my stuff was post dated after the period the rebates were due.
My comp is on its 4th year, I think I might be dropping ~$200 for a new mobo and processor since I made the bad decision with going with a dual core instead of a quad.
But I'll be using my old mobo and processor to be the core of my mom's new desktop so it really isn't a waste.

I plan to build my own gaming PC with my darlings help of course. I really have no budget, but I suppose I do need to watch my spending for a little while. Just recently joined newegg and my other half has been helping me look through and do comparisons.
Did buy a laptop that was supposed to run games nicely, but it so doesn't. Had it for barely 2 years and I can't even play jack crap on it anymore. Not even my precious WoW.

But out the door I would estimate just the tower was about 1300.
Mind you, it was all the highest end stuff (2600k, aftermarket cooler, full tower). The only thing I didnt go berserk on was the video card (settled for a gtx 570), since I cant justify paying $500 for a video card when my processor/heatsink cost 400.

My new laptop (which can play games pretty well, I think) was about $1,300 with a mouse. My desktop, what I actually use for gaming, wasn't all at once, so not sure on an exact number. Just the tower, I'd say ~$800
