You shouldn't care what people think of your gamertag. Let them berate you, but you're the sad one if you get bothered by it. Hell, my tag on League of Legends is xXxLeGoLaSxXx, just to make people rage at how terribly bad it is. And for anyone who plays, I also constantly roll Ashe.
I don't think I got mad at them making fun of my tag as much as my skill, though it did have some factor in my chainsaw killing spree. I think I wanted to show them that a Halo fan can be just as good of a Gears player as the next guy.

None has ever insulted my gamertag (Mr J Kapowey, god I'm original with names) though it does get a bit annoying when they pronounce it wrong repeatedly.

It is 'Mister Jay Cap-Oh-E'.
Not 'Mister Jay Kah-pooh-eh' or any other weird pronunciation you can come up with.
I totally read it as "KA-POW-EE" but I did read a lot of comics as a kid.
Actually, that's one of the only alternate pronunciations I allow. It's just the idiots who actually pronounce it in a way almost impossible with those letters. Or who stick 'pooh' in it. I'm not a bear!

People just mispronounce mine,or ask what it means. I reply, I'll usually get a "Oh...that's deep" or something similar, and I'll go back to playing.

I have seen some very unoriginal names, very frequently. I do take pride in my online identity, and respect those that also do the same. People that irk me, though, are the ones that have Game-Specific tags or "1337" styled tags; "C0D sN1p3R" and the like. Or people that have to have some form of phallic, excremental, or otherwise veiled expletive as their tag.

Tags I don't like, I don't actually insult. I just say them ad infinitum, and allow the inherent stupidity of their name choice speak for itself.
I've never openly insulted a player's tag. I might go "What kind of tag is that?" to myself, but I don't see much of a reason to harass them about it.

I put a lot of emphasis on it myself. However I consistently use the same thing and as such I consider the name to be a reflection of my online activites.

I knew I took it very seriously when someone started using both derivatives and what my old Av name was. I tried several times to explain how the name is a reflection of ones self, and I did not want credit for their accomplishments or their humiliations.

So it can be something to take seriously given the circumstances. Given the OPs circumstances and not having a highly original or connected name, Prolly wouldnt give two shits either way even if someone was making fun.

Key thing here is... Either dont listen to what people say on XBL or Dont play games that Quote unquote require verbal communication (No game Requires verbal communication, no matter how much people want you to think they do) Or grow thicker skin.

I've only had one person insult my PSN ID, tornadomaximus, and the best they could come up with was 'tomato-maximus'. I started laughing at that. I mean, that's just funny.

Mines Tankbusta47, a nickname I though up when I was 9 and just used for everything without thinking. It's lame but I CBF to pay money to change it, and I haven't gotten any crap about it really. If I had a free name change then hell yeah I would change it immediatley, but I don't so, yeah :/

I don't insult, either. I just over-state whatever the tag might be, and do so "straight-faced"

I would tell my favorite story, but that guy's tag was pretty explicit. Instead I'll use the "C0D sN1p3R" as an example. Like most people I'd pick the prominent word, in this case "sN1p3R" and I would begin or end every thing I said with it. "Hey ess-ehn-three-pee-arr, what gun is that?" "Hey ess-ehn-three-pee-arr, did you like that kill?" and so on. People that put numbers in their names risk me making them sound like they're droids. Remember that kids.

My Gamertag is BrokenBoySoulja, so many people know fuck all about music and think its from Soulja Boy and so constantly start throwing out racist insults (despite the fact that Im white).
Ive actually bought the MP to change it I just cant think of one good enough to replace it.

I couldn't care less if someone made fun of my gamertag since it started out as an in joke about my real name to begin with.

Just yesterday I had a group of guys make fun of my Gamertag when I joined a WaW match. I wasn't too fussed about it because they were just joking on, not saying much other than how it was a funny name, which smidget is. If it's all a little bit of light hearted humour then we can all get along.

I've had people insult my gamertag before. It's nothing new. "DeltaSpartan5" isn't the most creative tag on Xbox Live, but I don't really care. Not until people start insinuating that my gamertag makes me bad at a game.

I remember a 2v2 game of Gears of War where the two guys on the other team started making fun of my tag. They didn't call it stupid. They told me "You suck!" and "Look at his tag, dude! You should go back to Halo, fag!" Next thing they know, I'm giving them an overdose of chainsaw-to-the-back. I think I went a little berserk during that match.

So what's your breaking point? At what point do the insults start to sink in?
For me it's not insulting my gamertag (I don't get a lot of that.) but mocking the character I'm choosing to play in a fighting game. This got really bad with MK vs. DCU see, the purists didn't take kindly to the long underwear crowd invading the holy canon and serious story that apparently IS Mortal Kombat. This was how Green Lantern played by myself (a guy) got called a fag by Sonya um, also played by a guy. Button pushed? Check. Bullshit tollerance level self test complete! So yeah I kinda' gave it to im' with both barrels and actually found a use for that nifty heroic brutality with the bubble. I'd never used one outside of single player before or since.... Word to the gamer wise if you're a dude playing a lady and your opponent is playing a guy and you get the urge to call his character the "f" word? Um, don't.

I think I played with someone who did that on Whacked! a few times, thanks to the chicken gun and that comedian I think I lost badly. Then again that's not a co-op game so the razzing was kind of expected. Still numbers for letters is confusing I never know what I'm looking at for sure.... It reminds me of that psych experiment where they're going through a normal deck of cards and suddenly show some poor subject a red four of clubs. Instant disonnance just add wtf??

Agent Wiggs. Never had it dissed, really. Peeps usually just say Wiggs, although I do occasionally game with one guy who calls me "Wiggins." I actually quite like that though.

On a personal note, I'll never take a name that has a number, unless the number is already part of the name I want [like ED-209]. I dunno, I just think it shows a little lack of creativity to not try and come up with a handle that isn't taken.

Same as my username, "Mike Laserbeam".
I'm really proud of it, you probably disagree but I like it a lot. I'm especially proud that it contains no numbers.

I've had literally only one 'insult', that was some idiot on COD saying, "Mike Laserbeam?! What a crap name! Mate! You clearly watch too much Star Wars!"
I mean, something so incredibly stupid coming from somebody with a tag along the lines of "N00BK1LL413019287412094367XXXXORZ" didn't really bother me.

Another reason I'm so proud of my tag? At one point quite a few of my friends decided to change their gamertags to also have the Laserbeam. Felt kinda nice :)

P.s/Edit: I also realised that sort of behaviour is to be expected from people that play Call of Duty
