How much do you know about computers?

I know a bit. A little beyond just how to use it. But I have a friend, he's 16, I just turned 17, and he's built his own computer and mine. I bought the parts and he built it. It's awesome.

So I was just wondering, how many of you are like him and could build your own computer if you wanted to?

I really don't know much at all about computers, so I remedy my weakness with hanging out with people who know far more than I do. I also turn to my brother for advice since all he does is fix computers and upgrade his own. He helped me build a pretty nice computer for my classes and for gaming.

A decent amount. Efficient use of a Linux machine requires you to undergo a much steeper learning curve than Windows. I'm also doing a computing course in University. Looking forward to next years' modules, web design, animation, 3D modelling..man, it's going to be fun :D

Edit: I'm considerably better at operating one than I am at building one, although I am hoping to earn some money this summer and make myself a desktop machine that can deal with a few medium spec games (I generally use an Xbox for gaming).

I would also like to learn a bit more. Maybe not to the point of building my own, but being able to fix problems that most can't fix. Not because I have to pay a lot, my friend will do it for a couple bucks, but because he lives about 15 minutes away, so if anything goes wrong that's not to bad, I could fix it.

I can tear apart a Mac or a PC and know about half of what I'm doing. The rest is "on the fly" guessing and shoving. Its worked for me so far XD.

EDIT: But really putting a PC together is really quite simple. And honestly there is enough you can find online to figure out how to do it yourself without creating a giant explosion of sparks and fire.

Might seem like I'm trolling my own thread, but I have nothing better to do at the moment. My computer has something wrong with it so I'm downstairs on my parents, which is really slow. That's kind of the reason I thought of this thread.

But I have taken apart my old PS3 that was broken and out of warrenty. It was really interesting. I did put it back together correctly by the way. If there's one thing I'm really good at with computers and such is taking them apart and putting them back together correctly.

But anyway, I'll leave this thread alone and come back in a while.

I know a fair bit about them. Given the inordinate amount of time I spend on it, it would be stupid if I didn't. I could probably build my own PC, given a small amount of guidance.

I don't know much, but I can learn figure most stuff out pretty easily. I still panic whenever I see an explanation of a computer problem, all those numbers and .exes!

I have built a pc. It's pretty easy with these modern newfangled technodoohickies. I think that's the technical term. Fixing problems with Windows on the other hand can be quite the pain.

That's the extent of my knowledge, as well. That surprises a lot of people, especially my extended family (I'm considered, rightly, the nerd in the group).

Granted, I learn pretty quickly, so if I had to take classes or lessons or something, that could change. As is, my proudest accomplishment is learning to use Dreamweaver...sort of.

Not much really.

I mean just today I found out how to de-frag my computer.

I can install and maintain the programs on my computer though.

Quite a bit, I have replaced quite a few part, I know some very basic programming and I used to use linux (The reason I don't anymore is a long story but it's mainly because I can't)

I can figure out how to get files working and other random things the internet calls for, but it's more messing around enough to succeed and I don't understand some of what I'm doing (despite a few explanations, I have no idea what CD mounting is). Really, while in my extended transition period to Ubuntu (haven't used it much, though; I've been typing all this on my mom's study PC) I'm pretty much dependent on my friend to do things beyond basic operations.
