So after seeing the Escapist review for Dark Souls 2, I thought to preorder the PC version of the game, but upon opening Steam, I saw it listed for a whopping $79.99 USD. Amazon has it listed for $49.99, so I'm wondering if I'm seeing a typo or if it's because I'm in Japan(though I've never seen a game priced differently on Steam before now).

$71.99 USD here in Australia. About $80 Australian.

Amazon sells them for Steam though don't they? How are they able to give cheaper prices on new releases and make a profit?

$49.99 on Steam in America, although I didn't check Amazon. I didn't finish Dark Souls yet, so I'll wait for 2 to drop in price, and when I build my Gaming PC.

Uk here and Dark Souls II is on Steam for £39.99. On Amazon, it's £35.00 on console, and unavailable still on PC..

£39.99 which in:

USD is approx $66.49.
AUD is approx $73.72.
Euros is approx ?47.95.

So in other words it's better than Australia, slightly better than the rest of Europe but worse than the USA. Which is entirely unsurprising.

Although I bought it on the PS3 so I don't have to wait for a month and a bit. If my PC could handle it I probably would have chosen to wait though.

49.99? on Steam for Finland (aka whole Eurozone)
Because as we know 1? = $1 instead of the 1? = ~$1.4

Euro has it's benefits except when it comes to trading with American companies.

I linked it to the OP already, if anyone is interested in NOT getting boned by conversions and high prices, here you go:

http://www.kinguin.us/category/3025/dark-souls-ii-steam-key/

I've bought 6 games from them and I know of other escapist users that use the site too, they're all legitimate keys, you're just not getting boned by huge retail/sales store percentages.

right now the cheapest price for a steam key is ~30 bucks in US dollars, but in the top right corner you can change your country/currency and it'll convert it all for you to your prices.

I've just built my first pc and am trying to get my head around buying digital and all the places you can buy from. How can the places in your link sell so cheap?

they explain it in their "about us" section, but alot of these are smaller "ma and pa" type stores where they will get these games in bulk or dirt cheap for retailer prices, and then they scan/upload the steam keys to sell and ditch the boxed copies of it since it all links to your steam account anyways. They get to dictate their own prices much easier and are fine with taking a smaller cut if it means getting a wider market of customers, while most big retailers and online stores can't bend the rules as much like that without publisher consent.
