How much does defragging help?

Depends how bad the fragmentation is.

If youve got 70% fragmentation. Your speeds will rocket. If you have 70% fragmentation however, youve been running your computer, without a format or defragment since window 3.1

Whats wrong with with one that comes with your PC?

It ran for a while, finished and whined that it could not defragment a long list of files lol. IIRC, the MFT and page file (I was not using a static PF at the time) were fragmented and the windows defragger couldn't do anything about those.

Untrue. Defragging and Formatting shortening the HD lifespan was just an urban myth.
