There's a book series called The Sandman, where one of the stories in it is about a guy who believes that people die because they accept death as being inevitable. This theory gets overheard by the main character (It would be too long and complicated to say why but I'm just going to say that he lives forever) and so the main character places a challenge that they need to meet in the same bar on the same night, in 100 years time. They do this and they keep on doing this for six centuries, during which time the man has good times, bad times, and people even get suspicious about two people meeting at the same place on the same night every hundred years. Anyway, one thing that never stops is this guy's depression at the fact that there are people he knows and loves who are dieing around him, yet he stays at the same age.

And when the main character dies (Once again, I won't go into details), this man goes into a very deep depression and it takes ages for him to snap out of it.

So, in short, no I wouldn't like to live forever.

I'd try and give it up. You know how an hour seems shorter the longer you live? yeah...

Live forever, yes. never have my own thoughts? no.

Overall no it dosent seem worth it. To be alive forever would only be enjoyable if it was spent how you wanted to spend it.

I would like to point out that this guy has the option of dying whenever he wants and he is still determined to keep living even when everyone he loved has died and he's living in poverty.

I always thought it would be cool to be the wandering jew. The only downside would be continuing to age and only being rejuvenated every hundred years.

Well, I think a hivemind on a smaller scale among intellectuals is a good idea.
Well that has to be the scariest thing I have heard in a long time.

Well its the closest thing to a normal life you could expect an immortal to have. Kinda like that episode from Supernatural "Chris Angel's a Douche".

The Immortal Prince by Jennifer Fallon covers how much immortality sucks very well.

Immortality is worth nothing but you're life and sanity, cheap considering. =P

if i still had a soul to bargain with, i'd say that was a fair trade.

and i prefer type of immortality where you can't die of old age or sickness, but you can be killed. i mean, hello, insurance! i think immortality would be interesting, if only to see how much more fucking up humans are capable of. :O

I'd rather be immortal.
The only people that'd really upset me if they died is my close family.
But then, as soon as I get my new found longevity, I'd try and find a way to go as far back in time as possible.
Meaning that they didn't exist yet.

Eventually the choice wouldn't be solitude or immortality, it'd be no solitude due to death or no solitude due to immortality. I'd rather be bothered by others than dead, that's for sure.

I have thought about this alot, and believe me what im about to say is not without weeks, and weeks of thought, that said here goes.

I would do anything, and I mean ANYTHING, to receive the gift of Immortality.

I cannot stress that word enough, if I was given the chance to be immortal, I would do ANYTHING.

I guess that makes me selfish in a way.

Let the arguments commence.

Solitude is more valuable than immortality. As quoted by Achilles:

"It is the Gods who envy us; they wish to be mortal, as everything looks so much more beautiful because of it."

Immortaity would be cool IF you had someone or a group of people to share it with.
This. Stuck on your own would be crap, but seeing a whole bunch of stuff in the future with a group of friends would be quite fun.

immortality with a few other immortal people wouldn't be so bad but yes an eternity of everyone you ever loved growing old and dying would be pretty shit...
