How much longer do you think video games will be a scapegoat for everything?

I would say when People stop being Idiots.

So Never.

Games may not always be a scapegoat but there always will be a scapegoat eventually we will have a new media that people will claim is corrupting the youth.

Then we will all have a difficult decision to make my fellow Gamers do we decide to learn from our experience and support it? Or do we give the youth of tomorrow the same shit we had to deal with at their age?

I don't know I'm only 18 so I probably don't know what the fuck I'm talking about.

Beat me to it.

You can look back as far as you'd like and the only time something has stopped being flagged as a scapegoat is when something else takes it place.

Until Bill O'Rielly actually picks up a controller and plays a video game.
Fat chance of that happening, you would have more luck getting him and Fox News to tell the truth for once.
Yes, mock the most popular channel in America. That isn't horribly offensive at all. Want to make fun of George Washington, while you're at it?

Let me ask you an honest question, what evidence do you have that Fox News tells lies? Answer: there is none. That's just baseless conjecture. All this Fox News hate is completely braindead. They are the BEST news channel in the world. This is coming from someone who no longer watches it, but I know it because I can grasp the blatantly obvious.
Wrong wrong wrong wrong...

http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-june-21-2011/fox-news-false-statements

They earned politifact's lie of the year in 2011, 2010, and 2009 for "Health Care Death Panels", "Health Care Reform is a government takeover of healthcare" and "90% of homosexuals have AIDS". Their viewers are regularly the third most misinformed about political issues, ahead of only The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, two comedy shows.

They have also been proven to edit photos to create political discord, and manipulate video footage to create quotes that did not happen.
Does anyone remember when they said Mass Effect let you rape womens?

Edit:
almost forgot the topic at hand. I used that Jim Sterling video on violent video games in an online ethics class I took (most people in the seemed to be adults) and I was surprised when a lot of people agreed with me. In fact, they complained about parents throwing blame where it doesn't belong rather than properly taking care of their kids. Other people were annoyed that scapegoats like video games take people's attention and resources away from treating real problems. So, if I may be so bold as to provide a little hope, we might not have to wait so long before video games are accepted. After all, some of these older people remember back when rock music made you a serial killer

Yes, before video games it was TV/Movies, before TV/movies it was D'n'D I think, before D'n'D it was comic books I think, and before comic books it was communists. Point is there will always be a scapegoat, it's just a question of what unfortunate thing the collective idiot masses are pointing their fingers at. It's just nothing has come along to relieve video games yet.

I don't believe it ever won't be used as a scapegoat. People need things to blame when their world goes wrong and things like television, video games, and good ol' D&D will forever be the welcome distraction that people can trot out to avoid actually dealing with the real issues and, god forbid, make real progress.

When we get personal jetpacks. They will cause mass shootings, drug addiction, underage pregnancy, racism, sexism, lack of respect for elders, cancer and poverty. Those fucking jetpacks will be an affront to Nuggan!

Or maybe when all the out of touch old people die. Anything more technologically advanced than a gramophone is akin to the devil, including the whippersnappers who use such black magic.

nice article, in a way. i mean, it was good, but alerted me to something else to just sigh at. i can't even get mad about it any more, i'm just tired of stupid people saying stupid things to justify their stupid beliefs. worst of all, nobody is there to just call them out on it, it's never a debate. particular moment of interest there being

Katie speculates that maybe video games cause a release of dopamine and suggests that, maybe, more research is needed. Welner smugly smiles and says, "Well, sometimes research isn't needed,"

OT: i don't think it ever fully will. movies still get flak, heavy metal and rap music still get flak, the most we can hope for is that another medium will take the spotlight for a while, but i doubt it will ever fully go away

im Steyer says allowing teens to play violent video games was like letting them drink alcohol or smoke
Since he's talking about children here, I'm inclined to agree to some degree. Nonetheless, the scapegoating has been pretty rough the last couple of years, I suppose It'll stop as soon as some hard scientific facts are produced that speak against a negative influence. Or not. Research could very well proof it the other way around. I suppose the truth is, as with most cases, somewhere in the middle.

In order for games to stop being a scapegoat, the youth of America need to have another type of entertainment that is even more offensive to board old people.
My idea is that we should come up with a new genre of music that is so discordant and horrible that nobody can possibly listen to it. Then all the teenagers have to pretend to really like it a lot. Then this genre of music will become the scapegoat for all the shitty things a few young people occasionally do.
This is basically what politicians and big corporations do to citizens/consumers.

Old people apparently don't need a reason for all their brutalities. What about that sick fuck with the women locked in his basement. Why isn't his entertainment choices being picked apart and analyzed?

You know that thing where it's hard to tell when someone is being sarcastic in text?

Yeah, well, I'm getting it right about now. Getting it bad.
Good, I'm not the only one. I thought it was dripping with sarcasm at first.
Last couple of times I tried watching Fauxnews it was like Sesame Street for people seeking a cult. All of the 24hr news networks are really lame but if you want to talk about entertainment that destroys your mind, that channel would be it.

100 years, maybe more.

All new entertainments are misunderstood by the older generations, (AKA the ones who have power), and their misunderstanding combined with their refusal to actually educate themselves on the topic leads to xenophobia and shit like this video.

It was a while ago, but I have actually heard people say this exact same shit about comic books. Metal, Rap, violent TV/movies, and many nerdy things (NO, I'M NOT EQUATING RAP OR METAL TO NERD CULTURE) are still misunderstood and always have some negative stereotypes about the people involved with them. Hell, people used to say the same things about reading books for entertainment.

It won't really go away until we're really old. Like, REALLY old. Most of us probably won't even see that day, considering our lifespans are actually going to go down. Especially because I consider most of us the "Y" generation, and the "Z" or "COD" generation was obviously born after us, is the only generation that really accepts and understands gaming.

You wanna know something actually harmful to teenagers today? Football. Concussions, broken bones, hazing, injuries (some that can last your entire life), even deaths have resulted from simply playing it BY THE RULES.

Of course, we'd NEVER even think about saying anything bad has ever come from FOOTBALL. Character building and a sense of community are totally worth those broken ribs and brain damage, right Johnny?

For as long as the scapegoat works.

A scapegoat is a form of lie, and lies need misinformed people that's willing to believe it and be manipulated by the liar, which in turn has something to gain from manipulating opinions. That's how scapegoats work, because that's how lies work. It'll only stop when it fails to meet it's ends and people stop falling for the lie. Which means people have to start using their brains, which might be never.
