How much longer until Video games are accepted as an art form or beneficial to society? I believe it's not really a time amount but when "The Game" comes out. The one that will revolutionize the Industry and finally show everyone that games should be respected and admired. I believe it's when the best developers, designers, producers, programmers, and everyone else who are the best of the best and come together to make their game, with no attachments to deadlines, monetary limits, or social restrictions, create "The Game" to finally propel this form of media to a level of respect compared to the Mona Lisa in the Louvre.

I did not mention where many necessities will come from like the money because I want the answers to just be pure observation and opinions, not tied to physical limitations.

if Portal wasn't "The Game", there never will be one.

and to answer your question: not until there are no more religious (or otherwise closed-minded) zealots out to cockblock the whole world.

It will probably happen when people stop trying to burn gamers for heresy against the arts. Or once some amazing non violent and beautiful game comes out and they start changing their tone because of that.

But we still have to kill Jack Thompson..that's a must

Depends on how well we handle the burden of being on the outside but in the right.

It'll happen once society finds an exciting, new thing to hate and fear and scream about the corruption of the wonderful snowflakes. Rock music, tabletop gaming, violent cartoons, Elvis... those controversies passed, and so will video games.

Once something new comes around for people to deem culturally corrupting, such as virtual or augmented reality. Actually, come to think of it, if the next generation starts getting into body modification, that'll probably become the focus and everyone will forget about the game controversy. Remember, they wouldn't film Elvis from the waist down until rock and roll became more mainstream and common.

Let's put it this way: the more reactionary and angry we get (like them), the longer it's going to take.

Did you honestly attempt to blame society's unwillingness to accept video games as a medium of art? You are very closed-minded.

On topic, once the current, video game friendly, generation replaces the older generation it will become much easier.

Well one thing that would certainly help is the re-naming of the genre because as is these people just see us as toy makers gone nuts.

There was no "The Painting/Sculpture/Drawing/Performance/Instillation etc" that defined any Art movement. They were all evolutions of what came before, with a few offshoots. Waiting for "The Game" is retarded. Many artists don't get recognition until their dead, so with games an industry that won't die as long as there is money in it you are more likely to find the earliest games will be considered an art form first. Indeed Tetris, Pong and Pac Man (amongst others) already are.

Art is most likely to be recognised when it is not produced for obvious capitalist and corporate gain, something which all major titles today, are.

it won't until something else is developed that can be the new scapegoat for society. There will always be people who will hate video games no matter what, it's prejudice. no matter how many games like Animal Crossing are made my mom will still hate the medium as a whole. and no matter how in depth or beautiful a game is there will always be people who will dismiss it as a child's plaything.
what needs to happen for them to be accepted now is something new to be developed and gain massive popularity with the younger generations that the older generations won't understand and therefor start blaming every time something goes wrong. then games won't seem so bad. It probably doesn't help that Video games are called Games. Movies were originally called moving pictures, pictures are associated with art, so moving pictures will also be called art. Video Games won't be considered art until they are accepted as a whole by society. we're on our way, but it's gonna take a while.

for the sentence above to make sense: Animal Crossing is the only game my mom likes.

How long until we stop selling ourselves short, acting like the games we've had haven't been good enough? How long until people start understanding games on their own merits and not in comparison to every other medium? How long until this inferiority complex ends?

I understand the desire for one revolutionary experience that will forever change the minds of the naysayers, but that won't happen. The acceptance and integration of games will be an evolution, not a revolution, with the older, less understanding generations dwindling into the past. Will a game ever be looked at the same way as the Mona Lisa? Maybe not, but why should it? Games are meant to be enjoyed on their own terms, not sitting untouched in some museum. If games are an art, it's because of their technical excellence and their impact on our lives and society, not because some arbiter of good taste suddenly deems it to be so.

They can't and won't. How can video games be beneficial to a society? Most people would just say they are time wasters
