Some threads being redone are fine I think, though yes I get your point about sometimes it happens twice everyday. Though there is the case for the fact that you could just not post in them, and continue on your way?

With regards to gimmicks though, I like them. Take Calumon (sorry, I have no idea how to spell it) thats a gimmick and I personally quite like it, makes the posts seem a little more interesting. I wish I had a gimmick in fact, fuck knows what though.
People don't mind that, the problem is when the other threads are a mere day old, still on the second page and very much still open for posting. Also the fact that people want to avoid necro'ing threads, which can be a bit of a worry when peoples definitions of it can vary quite a bit.
It's a very confusing line indeed, and sometimes people just didn't know about the other thread, or wanted the discussion to continue without the derailment threads usual suffer. Essentially it's too complex to put down rules set in stone, mostly because no one would read them. Thats why I ended up deciding just to sit back, relax and repost my zombie plan every two days. Seriously, my plan kicks ass.

I understand your frustrations, yet it seems that the better approach, rather than ranting about what NOT to do, is to be a good example of what TO do.

To that end, to make balanced, well-written posts, and to encourage and support all those others who do the same. There's no point in being combative when so many agree and try to do as you do.

Thank you for writing it all down though, it is good to be reminded sometimes.

Well, the main thing I have an issue with is while there are rules against all of the others, or they are at least frowned upon, posting gimmicks aren't.You're making a guide called How Not to Post, which I'm going to assume that you'd like to be stickied or shown prominently, but one of your main things not to do is something that there's no rule against, and that the community doesn't as a whole think is bad.

This means that this guide, well intentioned as it may be, at this moment is heavily biased.
No I don't care for stickies (being one I mean), especially since this thread never would be because of my somewhat aggressive phrasing. It's also not what I'd call a guide, more of a rant, something I feel I'm going to add to the title of this thread. An understandable call though. It is of course biased, but then again everything is biased in the end, that's the joy of a forum, people can throw in their opinions, people will take what they want from it, if they don't care for my opinion they'll most likely care for someone elses.

Though I do wish people would read the clarifications and rectify posts so that it doesn't seem like personal attacks, especially since most of the kinds of people that do the aforementioned issues are not the kind of people I would bother to remember the screen name of.

EDIT: I see the comments regarding number 2 being an extremely long post, and with its sheer size is very understandable, however because of the paragraphs structure I didn't have any other real options, an irritation, but one I felt was unavoidable.

You did forget the one rule I wish more folks would abide by. Read the first post. Doesn't matter if it's one page thread or fifty pages. Know the subject. But yeah, lurking and posting has shown me that most folks are pretty decent forum users here.

I don't like these kinds of threads. Complaining about people on the forums, they give bad vibes and they seem to pop up a lot recently...

Let the mods take care of this sort of thing.

I would quote the man to defend Jack and Calumon (nee Catkid) but it appears many of you have already done so. I really enjoy his posts; I will actually go as far as to say that he is (they are?) my favourite poster on this great site. So thanks for tripping over yourselves to beat me to the punch to defend our favourite gimmicky fellow Escapist.

I fully agree with points 1, 2, and 4 though (despite the fact that I am guilty of breaking rule #2 on more than one occasion).

I think that flamers and twinks should be forced into the stocks and made to play the Sega Dreamcast for at least three days. That being said, since this is a thread about how NOT to post, particularly here, how come I can't type anything into ANY field using the most current edition of Firefox? I had to fire up Opera to post on another thread, and now I can't find the thread I was a-lookin for. I'll snuff it out eventually. Sometimes I abandon threads altogether because it just turns into a catfight between twinks. ANOTHER THING I CANNOT STAND: Moderators and other posters who thrash an otherwise well thought-out and composed thread that you started telling you to SEARCH FOR ANOTHER THREAD ABOUT THE SAME TOPIC! It's not like it's a bandwidth problem; there are thousands of threads. Just point a gent or a lady in the right direction, or, Maker forbid, ANSWER THEIR QUESTION! Thanks for listening.

People aren't going to read the rectifications are they?

I'm also afraid I don't see how I've "tripped over myself" when all I did was lack a clear description regarding what I was referring to. The manner in which I mentioned it even falls under the forums posting rules, all of my situations do.

I'm using the latest firefox myself and I'm perfectly fine, have you defragged and virus scanned your computer? I lack the adequate knowledge with regards to computers, but it's quite strange.

If the thread is in the first few pages of threads it's an issue, but if it's back a few dozen pages then I don't feel that the issue is really a problem, it's when people aren't even considerate enough to even attempt to find a similar post first.

Sorry, I had this tab open before you wrote the rectifications. The "tripping over yourselves" comment was aimed at the other people who defended Jack and Calumon; it's an expression I use to describe over-eagerness in a crowd of people (or in this case, posters). I apologize for any miscommunication.

I had to read it over a few times to see it, but you said things clearly, the phrasing was a bit awkward to me.

An understandable stance, but I don't feel the "vibe" personally, or see any ramifications, I feel it gets isolated to the thread itself.

I understand your frustrations, yet it seems that the better approach, rather than ranting about what NOT to do, is to be a good example of what TO do.

I've actually never made a rant before. It's actually kind of nice to have rants, it allows people to post a bit more aggressively regarding negative issues. In the end there's not really a right way to post, but we can all agree that there are a lot of things that just end up pissing people off.

Nice wall of text there. And I was just about to ask why you hadn't included "Don't make wall of texts" as a section. Now I know why!

Also, you're talking about the comment sections for the entertainment videos on this site. They are not supposed to bring out discussions, they are there so people can voice their opinion on what they just watched. Sure, they can be more detailed in what they thought, but saying that if they don't they'll be looked down upon and never ever be taken seriously again is just silly.

Exactly how is it hurting the site anyway? I didn't realize that all our shows were so crap that they desperately needed constructive criticism all the time.
Yes, people should voice their opinions, but clarify your opinion, someone saying that they like food isn't exactly going to help someone plan a menu.

I also feel that you're exaggerating what I said about the way people often react to these posters, but you cannot tell me that when you see a person who's posted "funny" in 50 different video threads is going to be giving a clear and useful opinion, eventually you just won't care.

I find it strange you seem to be so defensive about the sites shows, but you cannot tell me that viewers and their opinions/posts on those videos have not made major changes to the sites videos: Game Dogs didn't work out, Doraleus and Associates (Spelling for Doraleus?) dropped the Harry Potter story line like a rock, and those are just some of the most notable recent ones that I've seen recently, and I rarely look at the video comments section anymore because of the problems I brought up, I can only imagine what subtle things I may have missed.

Also, I had made an edit to include bricks of texts almost the very instant the thread was posted, before any responses had appeared in fact, your post is quite long, so I'm willing to assume that you weren't able to see it before you hit the reply button.

First, see bold & underlined text.
Second, have a look at your post (especially point #2).
Finally, feel free to facepalm yourself.

Thank you for your contribution. Have a nice day.
Please read the other posts and their replies before attempting to say this sort of thing. It's the paragraphs structure and the large amount of bracket explanations I felt that I needed to use to keep my opinion clear. It's all regarding the same issue and the problems that surround it. If you can find an appropriate location to break it off then I'll gladly make the alteration, however despite constant revisions I cannot find one myself.

EDIT: Finally, I fail to see why people keep bringing up the Calumon poster, he's hardly the only person who has a "gimmick", and he at least has intelligent comments to go with the joke, which as stated isn't the "gimmick issue". If I were to confront a poster regarding their form I would state it where appropriate and to them, especially since I've done this before as a person can tell by checking my posting history.
