How old is your all-time favorite game?

I just spent the last 25 hours (straight!) playing a campaign in Rome: Total War. Anyone who knows me even slightly knows my love for that game (and for what it's worth, I played as the Julii, my favorite faction. So easy to get those first 49 provinces when taking them from barbarians, then simply march on Rome).

Way back in 2004 I got the game when it came out, and at release I said "if they can get most of the bugs out of this game, it's quite possibly the best game I've ever played." And sure enough, when the 1.2 patch hit in late fall '04, I elevated RTW to my "best game ever" position where it has stayed constantly for the past six years.

For Discussion:

So...what's your favorite game of all-time, what year did it come out (or did you first play it), and has it constantly held that "best ever" position or have other games come and gone from your #1 all-time spot?

(fun fact: Since 1996, only three games---Final Fantasy VI, Alpha Centauri, and Rome---have held the #1 spot on my list.)

Not very. 5 years.

Oblivion is still on the current console generation.

Although, it is old enough that my generic, non-gaming labtop can run it!

Well, I can't put "distant land on". But I can make the draw distance solid enough for play. It's just the vast distance that it can't handle. I can't see mountains, landscape and shape, etc.

One of the reasons I still play the console version.

Strange as it may seem, the fifth anniversary of that game's release is coming up in just the next few months.

'Tis Morrowind, it came out in 2002, I have literally no idea when I first played it, it was a while ago. Within a month or two, it was my favourite game, and it hasn't changed since.

So yeah, it's fairly old.

I know!

I'm going to play it for the 450th time to celebrate!

I honestly don't have a favorite all time anything as it's constantly changing. It's gotta be between Dawn of War (original), Battlefront 2, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Call of Duty 2, Half Life 1, WRC4, Saints Row 2 and Red Dead Redemption.

My favorite game is... thirteen this year.

Pokémon is still the greatest game I have ever played.

A year. I believe that games get better with the time, especially the CoD series.

So, yeah. The spot has been held by IW exlusively since 2003.

Well the classic answer would be Ocarina of Time which came out like 1998

More recently however I have had a long running love affair with Time Splitters Future Perfect (2005)

Its a crying shame they never made it backwards compatible for my Xbox 360.

It's either Twilight Princess or Mass Effect 2. Either way, it's not old. I have been gaming since Super Mario Brothers was new.

That would be Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare which was released in 2007 I believe. (to lazy to look up) So 4 years if I got the year right.

I've been gaming since the late 1990s and MW is still the only game I consider near perfect in everything.

Dammit, ninja'd!

I guess my next favourite would have to be WoW. So unoriginal... it's, erm, 5 years old? Or 6? I forget.

Metroid Prime, 2002 I believe. But it's even better with Wii motion controls in Metroid Prime Trilogy, which came out in 2009.

Well Hitman Blood Money came out in 2006, and Super Mario World came out before I was born in 1990.

Doom 2! Fifteen years old and still the greatest game ever. In fact, Doom 1 is in the running for second place and thats 17 years old.
