Not very. The british we are a very diverse group of weirdoes.

There's the 'one liner gang rude' Chav
The 'No idea what the fuck that guy is saying but it sounds rude' Pikey
The Snarky school girl 'thinks shes being clever but is obviously rude' (usually accompanied by other equally repulsive looking females in School uniform)
The Aggresive Football fan (Self explanitory, one of England's most beloved 'rudes')
The Cheeky, arrogant Rude, usually armed with accent of undeterminable origin. Likes Sex jokes. Alot
The Collage/Middle Class Posh-accented Cynic who will insult you 12 times in a single conversation without you even realizing.

Here are some of Britains most Standout Rude people. Coming together to fufill the whole nation's populice.
So The English? No not at all. The whole country has it's middle finger aimed at you.
Under the desk.

We're polite on the outside, but on the inside, we're FURIOUS.
Chavs are polite to me anyway. They didn't used to be, they spent 5 years doing nothing but taking the piss out of me. Didn't react to it until one day, a friend of mine thought he'd have a go. I turned around and clocked him in front of all the chavs in my tech class. He went down and people stopped taking the piss.

Im 22 and Im quite polite, I gave my seat to a little old lady on the bus yesterday and she called me a 'Nice lad' offered me a liquorish.

Ive had some good parenting but my wit is as sharp and poisonous as anyother polite Brit.

When I went to New York for 2 weeks people found my politeness irritating. A waitress spilt coffie on me and she paniced like she was expecting me to sue her.

I would've but I am polite and British.

In person, the ones I have met are cool, but the Brits online seem to be just as rude and douschetastic as Americans.
Just with a cooler accent.

First of all I'm English, and think of myself as quite polite. My understanding is that the English are seen (stereotyped?) as a quite posh and polite people.

So my question is: If you're not from the UK do you think of the English as polite? Have you visited England, and what impression did you get of the English people?

If you live in England do you think of yourself as polite, and how polite do you think England is?

This question was brought about as I was hit by a car yesterday, and the first thing I did, after flying 10 feet through the air, was to apologise to the guy driving the car.
My sister moved to England a few months back, and apparently the stereotypes are indeed not true. She recently went shoe-shopping and the lady assisting her was very rude. She asked to speak to the manager, who was in the back watching TV. My sister could hear the manager telling the employee to tell her that he was busy and get rid of her. She said, "Excuse me, I can hear you." So the fat bastard came to the counter and told her to leave. She told him that she wouldn't be giving him her business in the future and he said, "good!" She told him that his customer service was piss-poor and he suggested that she go back to America if she wanted good service.

A very amusing story. I just don't understand a business that's not interested in business.

She also told me two things of interest:

1. People tend to stay in their class a lot more than here in the states, as it is very hard to move up.

2. You people do not use washcloths.

I assume that all people and all cultures have the same... Douchebag potential energy in them. They also have the ability to be great, well rounded people.

So I guess I dont have many preconceived notions about one culture over the other. Ive met douchebags wherever I go... and great people too!

I would like to say the English are polite, but then I turn on the cricket and there's drunk guys in red and white screaming, "ENGLAAAAAAAAAAAND!" and flipping the bird at everyone and intimidating other supporters.

So, really, England is no different from anywhere else in the world. Some people are very polite, but others are a bunch of hooting louts.

The english are people, so there's bound to be some good people out there muffed up by stereotypes and complete twats. That's the same for every single country out there no matter how generic they seem.

I was raised in one of the darker areas of Liverpool; as such, the majority of English people I've met are decidedly not polite. Those that I've encountered online tend to be, though, so I guess my hometown experience doesn't reflect accurately upon us.

I'm English (from the UK) and do considder myself very polite, especially to those who I meet for the first time...

However, If someone were to act in a rather rude matter towards me without sarcasm... Then I stop being polite entriely!

The only English people I've ever met were on Xbox Live. They were polite to me, and they seemed like any other teenagers really.

I visited for 3 weeks and saw very few incidents of bad manners, although I was on an American ambassadorial trip, so that might've had an effect.

The one bad thing that stands out is a kid chased one of the girls on our trip around the hotel we were staying at with a fire extinguisher, completely covering her and getting himself arrested. I had actually talked to the kid in the lot behind the hotel an hour previously, he seemed alright to me

I think possibly as a nation we've got a whopping great case of the galloping crazies. Everything that's been said is true, and since there's sod all to do in Northern Blighty at this time of night, I think I've cracked it; we're just collectively insane. We ruled a large bit of the world once, and some people love to go on and on about how great that all was. Those people tend to not be polite, the swines.

I work in quite a touristy pub in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales and we genuinely do get people coming in from all over the world. The only ones that ever give us any trouble whatsoever are the English ones, usually Southerners & Northerners disagreeing with each other over, well, anything really. My countrymen are nutters. Sorry guys, but we are.

Hmm, my friends from Devon and Manchester are rather polite. Though I'm sure they could be buggers if they wanted to.

I'm English (from Sheffield if it makes a difference), and I'm pretty polite. I live in a pretty crap area, so most people I live near are chavs ie.not polite. However, at college and public places and all that, people are over-polite to the point where they'll say sorry if you crash into them. I do that too.

But like others have said, we're also veeerryy sarcastic. It's fun.
Heh, I do that too and I don't live anywhere near Britain. Though I am 1/4 British. Think it's hereditary? >_>
Must be, there's no other explanation ;)
I blame my grandfather then, he's from Northampton. :D

From my experience (no offence, but it's true), the English are more polite than Americans. And before anyone goes of the deep end, I'm currently "enjoying" first hand experience of this. That's not to say us Scots aren't polite. I'd say (the majority) of Scots are just as Polite as the English.

The stereotype is just really outdated - think about football matches abroad. They don't say "Ah, the Brits are coming, let's put the kettle on". Instead, they rush out the riot police, because we're all hooligans.
Well...I haven't seen a Welsh football riot, and The Tartan Army keeps getting complimented by FIFA...but in the interest of fairness, I once told a fan from...the other side of a Scottish city (I won't say which) where he could stick his scarf...Plus theres the whole sectarian thing going on in Glasgow.

I show courtesy where appropriate, but I don't think I'm especially polite... certainly not overly so.

That said, I'm originally from Essex and now living in crap part of London so I'm probably not the stereotype people think of.
