No, we use foot-inch in the UK too. We also use stones instead of kilograms for weight. there was a thing on Qi about this: it's a retrospective thing, cos quite a few despotic leaders were said to be short, but they weren't. It was something about how it's easier to imagine a small man doing whatever it took to gain power.
