I'm one of those weirdos that bought MW3 and only played the singleplayer. On the whole I found it fun (even though it suffers from the same infuriating problems as its predecessors), but one thing really ticked me off.

See, the first mission is in New York, and you're playing as the Americans. So far, so standard. Next, you're with Price and the International stuff, again something expected. Then you get to the London level, and you're playing the SAS. So now I'm thinking that you're going to play as different nationalities throughout the game.

Nope, next level it's the Americans again. The Paris level? You don't see a single French unit around (sans 7 GIGN soldiers, who are only around for 2/3s of the first of the two Paris missions. The German levels? There are a few German tanks that show up in one tiny segment, but once again it's completely dominated by the Yanks.

There was a huge missed opportunity here! They could have shown us a much broader, intense spectrum of the whole conflict! We could have had some time playing the French, or the Polish or the Germans! Hell, what about the Czech resistance? They were awesome in that one level in Prague, why couldn't we play as them for a bit?

They had the chance to make this interesting, but instead it's all about America saving the day again. And quite frankly, I think they need to stop wanking over the stars and stripes.

But that's just my opinion. What do you think?

Edit: I forgot! That one mission where you're playing a bodyguard of the Russian President! That one mission is EXACTLY the sort of thing I'm talking about! It was great!

I think it'll be like a BF3 game where you're on the side that's getting hammered into the ground
How about when the axis wins and it's all your fault?

That'd might actually be more controversial than No Russian.

In the WWII games you played certain levels as the three "major" allies. US, UK and Russia. With Modern Warfare I, Russia kind of became the bad guys so that left the US and the UK. With Modern Warfare II the UK guys became some sort of International task force and you kind of lost the UK identity. Now it's the Americans, Price who is apparantly his own country now (and deservedely so) and some SAS missions. I was actually surprised they added the SAS missions. So with the story being what it is they kind of lost that three point of view thing they had going on in the beginning. I agree that it would have been great to play as soldiers from around the world. It really would have added to the whole "Modern Warfare" theme.

I also think they could have added even more countries. The thing is the world isn't only Europe and the USA. I haven't played the whole game so feel free to correct me or answer to let me know but, where are the Asian countries? For that matter where are the other NATO allies like Canada or Israel. They promoted it as WWIII and from I played it was just America and Europe.

If you played as the bad guys, what would the missions be like? Go murder and burn the Jew children for the Nazis? Blow yourself up in the name of Allah? The mainstream media masturbates to the idea that a game like this would pop up.

Haven't played through all of MW3, but so far the main, recurring Special Forces badasses have all been British. Not American.

If anything, it would be 'wanking over the Union Jack'.

The most famous characters in the entire series are either British (Soap, Price) or Russian (Makarov, Nicholai).

And American never really "saves the day" unless you count successfully beating back an army if invaders from their home country in MW2 as "American saving the day." In MW they get nuked and in MW3 they fail to save the Russian presidents daughter, only being able to save her (and the president) with the help of Price and Yuri (who's Russian by the way and who you play as half the game(You only play as the American in 4 missions)), and even then they all get themselves killed (The Americans I mean, not Price and Yuri).

So like the guy above me pointed out, it's really Britain that's always saving the day, with the Americans only occasionally helping and getting themselves killed.

For the sake of shaking it up with a different perspective, and let me be clear, this is just something I've thought would be somewhat interesting, what if one of the games had you play as a Nazi soldier at one point?

Seriously, the only reason it hasn't happened is because people are easily offended. I'm not talking some sort of generic soldier or pro-Nazi portrayal, I'm talking being placed in the shoes of one of them, in WW2, seeing all of the propoganda and hatred during that era, for a moment. I mean hell, MW2 had you gunning down an airport of innocent civilians in Russia.

I just always felt that if it were done correctly, a realistic portrayal of them would be something new to explore. Obviously that'd ruffle quite a few feathers, but I'd always just felt like it was sort of odd how we've played as the Americans, British, even the Russians, but never the Germans. Or the Japanese. They're both always just portrayed as cannon-fodder.

Hey, you could always play from the prospective of a Canadia- I'm sorry, I couldn't say it with a straight face. It is never happening.

EDIT: I've been quoted enough to learn about CoD 3.

Soldiers: Heroes of WWII let you play as a German tank unit.
OT: I agree. I'm one of the single-player players as well, and I was slightly perplexed as to how the US has the manpower to take the Russians on across all of Europe. I think one character should have been an American (because apparently there has to be at least one) who is part of an ad hoc unit formed by the survivors of decimated French/British/German units who are causing chaos behind lines.

Juno Beach, the Battle of Caen, and the Falaise Pocket. Leo Major liberating Zwolle alone and with one good eye. The Battle of Chosin Reservoir. CANSOFCOM and JTF2.

You think Canadians are polite and peaceful. For the most part, we are; we just don't feel the need to brag about our military and its accomplishments.

I am Canadian. It's just the Yanks don't want to see us being awesome.

You could be an unwilling participant. There would actually be an opportunity to make quite a deep war game. Say for example playing as the Germans in Stalingrad, your unit could be told to execute prisoners and another squadmate could refuse and be executed for disobedience, explaining why your character has to go along with it.

Playing from both sides would be effective as well to use propganda. Say in an on-rails mission as the RAF or USAAF you hear a story of V-1 rockets killing civilians. You then destroy a V-1 factory. Then as the Germans you hear the story of Allied bombing of civilian areas and as such have to maybe conduct a stealthy raid on an airbase in France.

Or you could perhaps be a defector from the Germans after witnessing an atrocity. The story could then deal with the hostility shown by the squad and how the player's character comes to win their trust.

Except it has already, years ago, in a Call of Duty game no less. Not a ton of missions but point was it was there. I think it even ended the Canadian section with going to reinforce the Poles from the Polish section of the campaign.
