(SPOILERS) This is just a personal series of ideas of how to make fable the great game it once was (feel free to add your own suggestions):

#1 Get a good villain! : The fable series hasn't had a decent, actually threatening villain since the first game. (the third one was threatening but didn't show up until almost the end!) Jack of Blades had a very interesting way of being the villain.(His voice in The Lost Chapters kicked ass!) He was evil and the people knew that yet they respected his power and fame, (see the arena scene when you first see him) he was cruel and violent and was always seeking the sword but did it discreetly enough not to be labeled as a threat. As well as the fact that you got a decent boss fight with him TWICE, unlike the second game where either you or Reaver SHOOTS HIM JUST ONCE AND YOU WIN (I mean seriously?) The third fable boss you actually fight but not really as it isn't even the darkness itself, but a fat old soldier whom were supposed to connect with at that point! (EVEN THEN ITS PISS EASY)

#2 Get the free roam from fable 2 and improve! : The free roam in fable 2 was the best (in my opinion) for you didn't feel constrained to the roads (as much) and you could find shortcuts to places the first one felt extremely linear in the free roam and the third one, (while still better than fable one) also felt constraining, basically, take inspiration from Bethesda and try to make the free roam like that.

#3 NO SANCTUARY PLEASE!!! : I get it, alright. You tried something and it did,t work. The manikins were cool, the rooms were cool, but to have to go their every time you wanted to go somewhere, or change weapons, or hell, even give a gift, it just broke the flow of game play and made you listen to one of 6 lines from your butler over and OVER again! (sorry for the rage)

#4 Lose the Bloodline crap! : The bloodline in the first game was great for its only purpose was to unlock the sword of eons, but now its all used for the idea that only YOUR family can be heroes only YOU can save the world! (like Yahtzee said, its been reduced to 1 line of stupid white people... yes I'm white so its not racist) The bloodline also cuts out many characters that were great in the first game, (Thunder anyone? or Scythe?, or Rose?) as well as plot hole in the third game where you are the last hero, BUT REAVER IS IN THE GAME AS WELL!

#5 More character customization! : Fable was all about choices in everything except for one it seems... what you look like! Oh sure, you can change your clothing, hair, gender, etc. But your facial features and body overall you cannot. (Christ guys, this is supposed to be about choices!)

#6 Combat : I liked the combat in fable three... I say keep but improve...

IN CONCLUSION: Fable has been going downhill in my opinion and these are my ideas to save it. hopefully one of you will forward this to Lionhead or whoever so they can at least see this.

Something tells me you will hate Fable: The Journey.

I say just bring Jack of Blades back. Even if it is technically impossible if the Hero was good in the Lost Chapters.

I've often thought this. I loved Jack, and although 3 tried to have an ancient unknowable evil, it just didn't have the same level of class. Though the "There is no mcguffining around to stop this, it will happen, all you can do is minimize damage" was a nice touch.

OT: I think a (don't hate me for this) prequel would do a lot of good for Fable. TLC was the first game that made me really want to go away and research the backstory, so something that brings you a little bit closer, or even puts you in, the whole Black against The Court thing would be awesome.

Take a look at the NPCs in Fable, and you'll see that Peter Molyneux is a bullshitter, not an enthusiastic visionary.
There is none, NO effort whatsoever put into trying to get players to "care" about the characters. A bunch of mindless drones who spew the same lines of dialogue over and over, yes Peter, well done, slow solitary clap for you.

And in Fable 3, remember how much he hyped up that great feature, you remember, he named it "Touch" and he kept going on about "Touch" and how fantastic and innovative it was, how it would alter games forever.

And what was "Touch"? Holding a guy's fucking hand!

Amazing, Peter, astounding. Now I have to make sure I don't move too fast and lose grip of an NPC's hand when I'm leading them from the jaws of satan. You made escort missions even more tedious.

Thank you Peter Molyneux, you magnificant genius.

I personally think the series could be fixed by just doing one thing.

Bring back the magic system that Fable 1 had.

Fable is one of the only series I know that has gotten worse as its gone on. Fable 1 had a great variety of spells (I loved the summon minion spell) and they went from a bunch of spells to like 6...then they went from 6 to 4, turning 2 of them into potions.

My advice to Fable, put more money into the game and less into hiring famous british actors to do the voices.

oh that's easy do everything you said but take the game out of that world, make up a new world, new history, new everything. Almost every RPG out there comes up with something new every time they release a title, 4 titles in the same world is pushing it, even Mass Effect and Dragon Age know that 3 is more than enough

I can definitely agree with this. Either in a DLC for Fable 3 or a future game in the series I want to see more of the Darkness. He was a very intriguing villain, but they don't expand on any of the things that make him so interesting to me. How does he know about Theresa, what does she know about him? Why has he been waiting so long to attack Albion and what was stopping before? We could have a really great villain on our hands if they just develop his character some more.

Make it like Dark Souls.

Improve the shitty combat, actually make it a challenge rather than a button mashing contest, more epic boss fights, stop making money have no value by late game and reduce loading times.

I think the big problem with Fable 3's story was more the narrative structure than the villain himself. By design, the game is split in two and that doesn't do wonders to the story. Each half of the game isn't long enough to expose the characters and develop them sufficiently.

This is more subjective, but as far as the setting goes, I think the game benefited more from Fable 1's fairy tale style of world than the industrial one from Fable 3. I haven't played Fable 2 so I guess the transition was unusually abrupt for me. It seems to me like Albion suddenly became boring the moment they sapped the magic out of it. I think they had something interesting going on with the "heroes" in Fable 1. Granted, the whole "Heroes' Guild" thing felt a bit corny, but the mythology behind it was nice.

Combat has always been wobbly in these games to be honest. Even in Fable 1 you're nearly invincible as long as you hold the block button. It's little more than a button masher with very little strategy or thinking needed. I think a major overhaul is in order. Along the way, I'd bring back the experience system from Fable 1. I like the way using more magic allows you to develop your magic skills more and so on.

How much more like dark souls? Dark souls is more than just a challenge... It's incredibly hard! But other than that I do agree that the combat for the most part sucks.

I gotta say, Jack of Blades was one of the most awesome and well written villains I ever seen in videogame industry. I actually feared him, and the way how he managed to outwit and outperform the main character every single time until the very last battle was amazing for me. I actually recognized him as a threat, and not as a "Oh, I'm gonna kill him in the last battle".

Also, in TLC, he took a level in badass, actively wanting to corrupt you to show how you was no better than him. And betraying your friends didn't even got a downside, like most games that loves to condenm villains. In fact, killing your friends for their souls instead of the harvesting the sould you were "supposed" to get was easier most of the times, and the scene where you defeat the Guildmaster as one of the funniest and most criatives scenes I ever witnessed.

Jack of Blades was amazing.
