Well, they tried that with mach speed sections and buggered up big time. Hopefully they can learn from that failure.

I can't see where this arguement of "go back to 2D" is coming from. It's as if any game in 3D is a bad idea; so what the fuck has been happening the past 10 years for games in general? 3D Sonic can be done well, just that Sonic Team never strike the anal perfection that all the fanboys want. They just need to try harder and actually test their games properly.
If the fanboys want to play 2D games, then they should go out and buy them.
Sonic is a 2-D platformer.

To make it 3d is both stupid and against nature.
Prince of Persia was also a 2D platformer. Now it's in Yatzee's top 5...
So what? I hated Sands of Time. Hated it! The combat was so bad, it literally killed my enjoyment of everything else about the game. Claiming a game is in Yahtzee's top 5 does not nullify the argument that a completely unrelated franchise controlled by a different company should not have made the change to 3D.

Well, no.

Go back and play the original Sonic games again.

Sonic was not, actually, all that fast. Going quickly through levels wasn't a matter of the inherent speed of the character, but in chaining jumps, boosts, and springs to maintain momentum.

If anything, the 3D sonic games need to slow down for the most part, but make progress feel fast by allowing you to smoothly avoid obstacles by using your abilities and retain momentum.

Lets not forget Mario.
not the point.

Mario underwent a drastic overhaul in game mechanics, and was hardly a super-fast game to begin with.

POP keeps with it's setting, and is faithful to the original.

Sonic does none of these, it's piss poor level design either makes everything too slow or is just too linear for a 3D game.

Instead of innovating, sega looked at Mario 64 and went "how can we make a sonic game like this?"

Answer: You CAN'T, so sega shouldn't have bothered.

All the Sonic Adventure games did was either piss off those who loved sonic, or made a load of anime fanboys wet because sonic talks in a game, not just on the cartoons.

It didn't look like a sonic game, feel like a sonic game or play like a sonic game.

THEN THEY BUILT SEQUELS OFF THIS LOAD OF DOGSHIT!

TL:DR Sonic in 3D blows.

Okay, some of you guys just need to cooooooooool down.
Sonic in 2D was AWSOME! I espiacially liked Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
But Sonic in 3D isn't as bad as you're making it out to be. Sonic Adventure, and Sonic Adventure 2 were the best 3D Sonic games of all time, it just went downhill from there.

Listen, the games "suck" not because of the 3D thing, they "sucked" because SEGA needs to grab the idea of beta testing, game delays, etc. The reason why "suck" is in quotes is because I haven't played Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Heroes, Sonic '06, etc. but I HAVE played Sonic Adventure 2 and I liked it.(Even though Sonic Adventure 2 is HAILED!)

Also, one thing that pisses me off is that when people say "Sonic Game" they think off the home console games except Sonic and the Secret Rings. Sonic Rush, Sonic Chronicles, and Secret Rings are really good games and yet they are ignored just like how Screwattack.com ignores Kirby games.

MRMIdAS2k, you still fail to give a valid arguement for why returning to 2D gameplay is a step FORWARD. There have been some mistakes in the 3D games, but Weirdaljedfan is right; they are not as shit as you make them out to be.
I will also issue a warning that my fanboy radar is on.

I'm going to quote myself from the 'Sonic and the Black Knight?' thread, because it's probably more relevant here.

To be honest, if they really want to make the series good again, they need to stop making them themselves. Farm them out to other companies, like they did with Dark Chronicles. Now THAT was an experiment, and I think it paid off - it may be hit and miss, but at least half the people who play it actually enjoy it. Can you say the same about Shadow the Hedgehog, or Sonic '06, or Sonic Heroes?

I think they should stick to their strengths and make them like a classic Sonic game, obviously the Sonic Team can't write a plot to save their lives and 3D games are beyond their grasp so they should stop killing their franchise.

Well, you already have your old-school 2D sonic in the Rush games, so it's not a question of them changing to that, because they're already doing it. The point that Sonic Team just suck in the third dimension is probably fact, but pulling out of the mainstream consoles isn't going to fix anything.

Stop making them, and destroy the recent ones which were awful. Maybe in 15-20 years time make a new one.

Well it could hardly be a step BACKWARD could it?

Sonic rush was allright, if you got past the fact there is voice acting that sucks and sonic has too many "rad" gimmicks.

The bosses however, sucked, the awkward 3d wasn't a help, and the quick movement of the camera for set-pieces threw your finely laid plans down the shitter in one fell swoop.

I'm hardly a fanboy, fanboys blindly take whatever shit they're shovelled, then defend it to the death, I'm actually criticising the shit I'm being shovelled.

Sonic went to shit as soon as Sega went "look we r do three dees"

It's just good capcom learned from their mistakes and stopped making the Street Fighter EX series.

First, look at your avatar.
Second, you're in the school of thought of "OMG classic Sonic was The Shit; they should just keep pumping out more of that because nothing's been as good as that". It's a competetive market; I highly doubt that anyone (other than you) would go and spend $50 on a platformer that entirely restricts itself to a vertical plane.

EDIT: And of course it's fucking step BACKWARD, that's what Sonic Team did for mainstream IN THE PAST.

I just had a bizarre though regarding control scheme. If the point of Sonic games is to mesh platforming with insane speed, what if you just controlled Sonic like a... race car?
Sonic and the secret rings for the wii.
You just steer him w/ the wii remote like when you play racing games, one of the buttons is the break the other one is dash/jump, the game is good , 7,5-8,0 deffnetly, too bad its so f***ing hard you have to win by trial and error, the story completly ignores the oh so hated characters, Sonic enter the arabian nights book to stop a genie who is messing with the book, the hated characters appear as character from the Arabian Night scenario (eggman is a king, Tails is Ali Babba etc) in "cutscenes".

there are lots of things that piss me off abt the game, like every stage you finish will unlock 1-3 chapters in other books and you have to press ok for each one. To select a stage you have to navigate abt 4 mandatory menus. The Cutscenes are motion pictures. You start relatively slow and have to unlock upgrades to get to the speed you wish you had started at.

How could Sega make Sonic games better? I will tell you how! :)

Sega needs to go back to the old school fast as hell 2d Sonic! But not in 2d graphics. Make Sonic on the PS3+360 in 3d super hi-res graphics but on a 2d playing field. Did anyone here play the re-make of Ghosts N' Goblins for the PSP? That game kicked ass. Old school game play with new school graphics. It was so cool, very hard, but very cool. That is what Sega needs to do with Sonic games. Because a Sonic game running at 1080p at 60FPS would be so awesome! The old school color scheme was made for hi-def. The colors would pop off of the screen. It would be so pretty.

I also agree with many of posts above, get rid of all the newer super lame characters too. Only Sonic with none of the other fools. Just good old Sonic running at mach speed kicking ass! With a new villain and story too, just to make it fresh.
