I've said it twice before and I shall say it again for it is the greatest issue on the table!

Less! Fur! faggery!

I agree that there are too many characters in this series; I think it numbers around 20 all squabbling over major playable roles. Not in any way helped by the fact that Sonic Team insists on adding at least one new character every game.
Although what they've done with the Babylon Rogues makes it more managable: have them appear in a spin-off series, then never let the anywhere near other games (bar cameos).

Sonic Rush on the DS is so good it makes my thumbs hurt from playing for extended periods. I can name few other games that do at the moment. The dual screen thing is perfect, and the pace is blistering, as it should be.

I was 12 years old in 91 when the first sonic game came out, so quick math: it's been 17 frikken years of sonic. so thank you sonic for the good times *blast processor, chuckles*
But the franchise is now dry

I think that the only way to truly bring back Sonic from the depths of Hell would be to just make another a new Sonic game that touches back to its old roots and doesn't have any childish or stupid gimmicks. I'm acutally refering to the latest Sonic game, Sonic: Unleashed. When I first saw the gameplay for this game, I thought to myself, "Finally, a new Sonic game that most likely won't suck." I thought this because the gameplay switched between a 2D and 3D view. A method which I thought would look like would work. Then I saw the gameplay when Sonic turned into a Were-Hedgedhog, or whatever it is. I immediately thought, "...Fuck." If anyone from Sega or Team Sonic reads this, please guys, just make the game about running. That's what Sonic does. No more stupic gimmicks, please?

First off to get it started, focus on Sonic. You fucked up Sega you can't afford to use other characters right now. Second think open world there should be ways up high to beat a level and ways underground to beat a level. Ways to the left to beat a level, ways to the right to beat a level and all the shit in between. Ignore story focus on gameplay, camera, and level design. Speed is important but not if its not the player doing it, as in none of those boost to boost to boost to yet more boost segments. There should be room to explore a level, and various alternate paths faster and slower. There should be a boss at the end of each level and the final boss should be suitably epic, and preferably Metal Sonic.

I'd have to say stick with the very first characters and just make new worlds and keep all of the original actors/speakers for the series

Short story: make Sonic and The Secret Rings.
Hell. No.

Also, forumites, consider the following:

Imagine Sonic Adventures without Amy, Big, and that half-assed adventure element. Add to that SKIPPABLE CUT SCENES. Oh, and substract those Chao monstrosities too.

Focus on the core characters, like Sonic and Knuckles, and put them into a high speed linear course like in the Adventure games. Add the other characters in for minigames and cameos, make Eggman start wrecking havoc with some kind of airship, and you have everything you need for an awesome Sonic game. Oh, and bring back Chaos. He was an awesome antagonist.

Well, they tried that with mach speed sections and buggered up big time. Hopefully they can learn from that failure.

Well, no.

Go back and play the original Sonic games again.

Sonic was not, actually, all that fast. Going quickly through levels wasn't a matter of the inherent speed of the character, but in chaining jumps, boosts, and springs to maintain momentum.

If anything, the 3D sonic games need to slow down for the most part, but make progress feel fast by allowing you to smoothly avoid obstacles by using your abilities and retain momentum.
true, but I was also hoping for them to remove 90% of the combat

Use Sonic adventure and the mario 3D games as a base, then use slow mo/speed tricks (like Jedi knight 2) to make his speed a real advantage. This skill has a recharging stamina bar that can recharge faster when you pick up rings.

I think the most important thing is needing that slow mo gimmick to be able to control finite movement when hes near top speed, you give him that decent level design solid gameplay mechanics and the game will bear the burden of any crappy story well.

There is no way to improve the series. It is better off to let the franchise die. I liked Sonic in my youth but as time went on I knew that the franchise was too far gone to ever be saved. But if the series was to live the developers should go back to the rodents roots.

I disagree look at mario its been done nicely in 3D the reason why they didn't change the basic formula much with sonic they try to hard to change it or not try hard enough to build a qaulity title out of it.There is plenty of room to grow it but its something called quality and effort and that's something the industry has issues with.

This is Team Sonic we are talking about. They have no idea what quality is or what effort is.
