Hello Escapist Forum,

I am just starting up with pc gaming, because of my new handy debit card. I have purchised Team Fortress two and I am planning on buying a few other games depending on others suggestions.

I would like to play Team Fortress competitively but when I go on the websites that have leagues I get overwhelmed, I don't know how to join a active team to start with, I don't know how to get on peoples servers, I don't know how to do anything.

I'd really like some help on how to get started. If you know how please let me know how in a pc noob friendly guide.

Whichever website you're using should have a help section that tells you exactly what to do. It would help to know what website you're trying.

I'm going from website to website I don't know which one would be fit for me. I also don't want to spend any money on this.

Try http://www.tf2lobby.com/. Teams are done schoolyard pick-up style from what I hear, so you don't have to commit to a team right away.

I'd recommend you get used to the game first in public servers, particularly Scout, Soldier, Demo and/or Medic, before starting, though.

What's wrong with snipers?

Just go on Gamebattles [http://gamebattles.com/] and create an account. Everything should be simple to understand.

It says I need to copy a code to my steam profile, how do I do that?

Snipers are used occasionally in competitive games, but those four are more "standard". You can play sniper but I'd recommend you also be decent at Scout, as usually the scouts are the ones who change to utility classes like Sniper.

EDIT to respond to ninja: Go to steamcommunity.com, enter your steam account details, then edit your profile and copy-paste that code in there.

As a class, it's easily abusable: just wait in a corner and wait for someone to come by. Sadly, that's what a lot of people end up doing and thus the Sniper got a pretty bad rep. Which is a shame because as with every class it's véry useful. It's just easy to be completely useless with and still get points.

There are some pretty good guides about what's involved in competitive TF2, but I don't remember where off the top of my head (because I just play to goof off and have fun). There was a decent intro to the whole concept written up by someone that got linked from the official TF2 blog a few months ago, if you feel like digging around in there.

Where in there, this is what the code looks like tf2lobby:22365097

From the home, go to "Edit my Profile" and then paste that code in your summary.

EDIT: I think this is what Nalgas is referring to: http://www.ubercharged.net/how-to-play-tf2/the-competitive-tf2-guide/
It's quite a long read, but it's worth it when you have the time. It's probably better if you have some public server experience first, though.

That actually makes me want to join a league and play as the Sniper. I assume the Spy has similar bad press?

The spy is highly situational in competitive games, as the enemy team communicates a lot so it's easy for them to recognise you as a spy (as they'll know what the person you're disguised as is doing), and once they know you're a spy, the whole team will too. Occasionally a spy is sent out for a quick medic pick (as most teams won't be expecting a spy), but after that one kill, you'll have to change again, as they'll be expecting you.

That all makes sense, I think I'll give this a try at some point. I will play as Sniper and Spy.

Standard 6v6 match

Primary Classes

2 Soldier - Primary classs for defending the team medic. There is 2 soldiers:
Pocket Soldier: Stays with the medic
Roaming Soldier: Goes solo for some killing but sometimes stays with the medic

1 Demo - Great for covering chokepoints and defending capturepoints. Used frequently with Kritzkrieg

1 Medic - Head of the team. If your team medic dies, retreat, most of the time is useless atacking without a medic

2 Scout - His primary objetive is to flank and kill the enemy demo/medic. They Also works for supporting your team demo

---------------------------------------
Secondary Classes: 1 or both Scout sometimes switch classes depending the map/situation. Also sometimes 1 soldiers switches.

Heavy: Used a lot for close range maps (freight, well, sometimes granary, and badlands last point) dues his extreme damage.

Sniper: The main job is to kill the enemy medic, but also picking up some random enemies. Great for long-medium range maps.

Spy: Same job as the sniper. Also used for sapping sentries (not a lot tho)

Engie: Used mostly for defense in cp_gravelpit and sometimes badlands last point. Helps to get off those anoying scouts.

Pyro: Used mostly for ubers-pushes and defense in cp_gravelpit last point. (airblasting soldiers rocketjumping to C tower)

sorry for my bad english

Hmm. I only play as Sniper or Spy so this could be interesting. I'll have to have a go at this at some point in the future.

Demoman, 2 Scouts, 2 Soldiers and a Medic are the standard TF2 competitive team. Obviously in some cases the others are used but they are the most used by far.
