How do you shut up an extreame small l liberal (important distinction in Australia) or hard core atheist.

Be accepting of their beliefs and as polite as possible, back up your points and be intelligent.
It really freaks people who expect their opponents to be thuggish idiots out. (not pointing at anyone in this thread.) (honestly) (you can trust me)

How to shut up religious zealot in a second.

For example, ask them how someone can really do a good deed if behind each reason for doing a good deed is inherently selfish.

Not sure if I did it right, but I gave it a shot anyway.
That's a very thin argument and I doubt that would work on anyone.

Truth be told I've very little to say to shut a person up, ignoring 'em seems to work fine though it certainly doesn't get me any less worked up if they succeeded in doing that.

"Care to elaborate?"

Most of them don't even know what elaborate means.
Now I'm not Republican, though I am Conservative. What you posted is the stereotype of Republicans are stupid and uneducated. Which isn't true. Such a thing wouldn't get me to shut up. I've been in threads "elaborating" until I had to leave because I had more important things to deal with, like going to class or eating.

Elaborate: To explain a subject further with detail.

How to shut a Liberal up in a second.

Tell them to use a non-liberal source of information to disprove your argument.

If they do come back with information they claim isn't liberal, there is a 99.9% chance it is Liberal. Countless times I have looked up sources that Liberals have used after I used my shut up technique, and I have shot down every one.

They usually come back with some obscure source, but when I do research, I find that the trail leads to Liberals. The Liberal that brings the information back, thinks that since I am Conservative and most likely stupid, I won't actually take the time to do the research to disprove his source.

If you are going to say something, actually say something that adds to the discussion. I did my part with a well thought out post above.

If I want to be serious, I will be serious.

Ok, then I'll be serious too. Maybe more people would quote conservative studies if 90% of them weren't hilariously biased.

Wow. I am religious, but still, fair point.
That is a really good question.

I'm assuming you mean that the reason people do good deeds is to get themselves into Heaven after dying, right?

OT: How to shut up anyone who has just spent ages explaining how their point is better than yours, and, even if they are right, say the same thing you said at the begginning.

That's what me and all my friends use in an arguement against another friend; he follows the PC religiously, and while none of us have Macs, we all just take the piss by saying how we're going to all go buy Macs for Christmas, and burn our PCs.
Then when he sometimes has a mini-rant, just say the same thing again.

that's a good one, but on the flip-side, how to shut up a Christian:

'Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?'

Hmm... Then again, that works both ways. Doesn't it?
not really, real faith requires that you be unwavering in your beliefs, i.e not accepting the possibility of being wrong.

True, but it's far more scientific to follow conclusions that actually have evidence behind them than those that don't.

I think he's just pointing out the irony of the post (in that both sides should accept there's a slight possibility that they're wrong, yet the initial poster has decided to go after one side only). I.e. he's saying the same as you in a roundabout way.

lol. That's not exactly a fair request.

Asking for a non-liberal source can really only mean one of two things: Asking them to use a conservative source to back their argument (which, if the argument follows political lines to any real degree is asking them to use an opposing viewpoint to back their own - that's hardly plausible).
Alternatively, you're asking them to use an unbiased source... Which sounds reasonable until you realise there's pretty much no such thing if you dig deep enough. Which, in essence gives you free reign to discredit their source as being liberal on the grounds of some minor point.

You see, it's a no win situation because you're using what's basically an unfair discussion technique.

Then again... Considering the point to this thread, I suppose that makes sense. But in an actual debate, it's pointless to even talk to someone who says things like this.

Hoo, boy. I can see this thread offending someone.

Anyway... How to shut up a console/PC elitist: Just agree with them. Oh, god, just say "You know what, Mr or Mrs hardcore gamer? You are absolutely correct; my views are, indeed, inferior to yours."

I have spent too long trying to merely *end* these arguments to bother otherwise.
