ohhhhh yeahh

they are fucking awful.

They couldn't understand why their already shit laptops wouldn't work right, so i go over to fix em..shit had 94 windows updates to do, and like 400 mb of java to update..and my parents thought they were virus's everytime it popped up to update ._.

Then they get so amazed and say shit like "How did you know that wasn't a real e-mail and was fake?!?!" and i'm absolutely dumbfounded at them for asking, as nothing could be screaming "HI, I"M A VIRUS CLICK ON ME" more than some of the e-mails my mom has opened up..

My dad is great with technology, unfortunately he always likes to do things the hard way and just makes a mess for anyone else who wants to do something.
That's my house's command center where you can control the internet, all the lights and anything plugged into certain outlets and have a robot announce things over the intercom. He also did it before wireless was readily available. Some of the things he does it pretty neat though, such as hooking up the 360 to that monstrosity so I can play it on any TV in the house (as long as the controller signal reaches). Other things are just pointless, such as the talking house. Sure you think it would be cool but of course when he first got it working he had it say so much crap it just annoyed everyone. He installed a sensor in the cat's litterbox and had the house announce whenever it was in use. Seriously. Just because he can. Not to mention the horror of him using the chocobo theme song as an alarm and forgot to set a command to turn it off so it played for HOURS!

My mom on the other hand gets laughed at for using internet explorer in my house. She's not good with technology but she isn't an idiot so she can do all the basic things.
holy fucking christ that is insane, your dad lookin to upgrade to skynet 2.0 anytime soon? christ.

I guess the thread should be named how useless or useful are your parents with tech?
Anyway, my mom is pretty resourceful, she started working on the internet bussiness when the internet bussiness was starting to grow, so she grew with the system.
My dad is pretty good for computers but give him an iPad and he has more trouble with it, not completely incompetent but he gets confused.

Here's what usually happened daily. Most recent one in my head.

*Mom turns on TV*
Mom: "What channel is [insert channel]?"
Me: "Just press Last, it'll bring you back to the last channel it was on, which was that one. It's easier."
Mom: "Okay, where is that button?"
Me: "I JUST showed you that button Yesterday. Don't you remember?"
Mom: "No, where was it?"

I then have to get up, walk over there, and show it to her.

*Mom turns on TV*
Mom: Why doesn't this remote work?
Me: *Walks over and hands the correct remote*
Mom: Thanks!

*Mom turns on TV*
Mom: Why is it blank?
Me: It's probably on the wrong video. Just press the video button on the side of the TV.
Mom: Huh? Which button?
Me: I JUST SHOWED YOU IT YESTERDAY (I yelled like this last time)
Mom: Well, I don't remember.
*Gets up, changes the video to normal*
Mom: Oh, I see, well, I'm don't watch TV as much as you so I don't know!
Me: You watched it 5 days in a row and I had to help you every day. You could at least remember. Plus, I have bad long-term and short-term memory, don't watch it nearly as much as before, and I still remember it all.
Mom: Okay.

And the next day I still have to help her with the same exact problem. WHY CAN'T SHE JUST REMEMBER?!

My mom sometimes asks me for help when she's Google-ing things.. My dad avoids the computer entirely. When some kind of technology is brought into the house if the people who dropped it off won't set it up then it falls to me. Also, if there's any sort of problem with anything I'm automatically the one who must have done it because I always know how to fix it. If there's any problem that I can't fix and we need to call support, I'm the one to do that too.

When I move out my parents will descend into the dark ages..

Well, my Dad's managed a team of computer programmers for 25 years, so he's very, very not useless.

My Mum, on the other hand, couldn't tell a USB port from the power button. Not even kidding.

They both have strange relationships with the machines.

My mother uses her Mac exclusively for internet-based stuff [a huge waste of computing power, because that thing is a beast] and refuses to learn how to use GIMP, preferring to use the awful desktop downstairs with some version of Photoshop that has been lost in the mists of time. She can work her way around everything pretty well, but her refusal to learn something so simple really gets on my nerves. She also smokes and drinks coffee at her computer, which means the poor thing looks like it's wearing desert camouflage. Disgusting.

My Dad uses his laptop for office work, but he's never really had any problems. I install anti-virus and maintenance software for him occasionally. He does tend to get extremely frustrated when Windows starts being Windows.

And me.. I use Linux, I'm still trying to learn how to use the CLI. I guess I know a bit more in general, but not a whole lot

My Dad is...probably roughly on level with the Amish. In fact I used to call him that earlier. I cannot think of a single piece of tech that he has gotten that I haven't had to walk him through the use of. The sad thing is, many of them were cell phones that I'd never worked with before, considering the last one I owned was 4 years ago.

My folks are... alright with computers, though sometimes I have to keep reminding mom of what to do when she uses one...
