It is a hoax. If you look at history, there were thousands of people who thought the world would end January 1st of the year 2000, and then a couple more thousand that thought it was 2003, and now all of a sudden it's 2012.
However, I don't believe the world will "end" like everyone thinks it will. T.S. Elliot kind of thing here. The world won't end with a bang, but a whimper. Once we use up every available resource on this entire planet we'll either leave or die out, leaving the world a dark, barren wasteland.

But, I would have thought AFTER we hallowed out our planet of resources, it would crumble, turning not only literally turn into the "planet of the dead" but also kill almost every organism on our planet.

The world is only going to end for humans. The planet will go on for millions of years after we're gone. Humans will slowly die out, possibly to be replaced by something better as it has been for the millions of years before we existed.

Anyways, it will involve lots of fire, dinosaurs, zombies, aliens, tornadoes, and nukes. All at once. There's no way to tell for sure, since it's probably about as real as Y2K was. Guess only time shall tell.
