We will be crushed under a pile of repeat threads.

Nice exposition there, OP.

Anyways, it will involve lots of fire, dinosaurs, zombies, aliens, tornadoes, and nukes. All at once. There's no way to tell for sure, since it's probably about as real as Y2K was. Guess only time shall tell.
Wait, Dinosaurs?!?!
Have you not heard? You see, when the aliens come, they will bring both the zombie virus, as well as the DNA for the dinosaur species for their molecular re-assemblers.

2012 is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. It's going to be the next Y2K, the thing people wouldn't shut up about but shamefully won't admit to being worried about afterwards.

As for how the world will end, and I define 'end of the world' as 'everyones dead' in this context, I think it will likely be a major natural disaster.

Think asteroid, or Yellowstone erupting.

It's kind of in vogue for people to say 'hurr hurr, human fuckwits will kill themselves off hurr hurr...' but franknly at this point in time it doesn't strike me as likely.

NO, we could NOT kill all life on Earth with nuclear weapons.

NO, it does NOT seem feasable to global warming ourselves to death.

Etc...

Considering that humans have proven to be one of the most adaptable species on the planet, showing up in every environment, do you really think we'll go extinct? I mean, really?? Civilization could end, and easily if we aren't careful with our resources. The sun will eventually heat the planet up to the point where life won't be able to exist. On that note, life won't disappear until then. Do you know how many mass extinctions there have been, and yet life is still here? Jesus people, do your homework before answering these threads, you all look like children guessing what part of the north pole Santa lives at to me (except the one who posted Sarah Palin's pic...that one's on to something).

Either humans will last as long as possible, probably as savages at the end when all life goes, or we will escape our crib and expand into the universe. If we do leave Earth, we have no idea what all we will encounter, and even the end of the universe may not end us.

The world will end whenever my race finally decide to destroy you all.

Tremble before our might, puny humans!!
Can I join you lot? I was never much of a fan on being on the losing team, and being the only human on an alien invasion fleet could be fun. Maybe a spy for the aliens?

The world's gonna end under the weight of our own decadence, and not for at least a decade or two.

I think that if humans were to destroy themselves, it would have already happened, so that's out. 2012 may happen. We don't know. It's just like death, we won't really know until it gets here right? I think the world is going to end in a quick little "urk" kinda way, and that'll be that.

The world will end in five billion years when the sun becomes a red giant and boils all the water on Earth, and eventually burns the entire surface. It will possibly suck the Earth into it's gravitational pull, and it will collide with the sun, effectively destroying it. Now human's destroying what we know as Earth, that is an Earth where humans are the dominant species, I don't see it happening any time soon. Even with nuclear weapons, nuclear winter, what have you, people will survive in isolated areas. It's vain to think we have the power to destroy an entire planet, even an asteroid, or a polar shift can't destroy the Earth. They've happened before, and it's still here. The only things I can see causing mass human extermination are a particularly deadly virus, a massive asteroid strike which causes severe sun blockage due to particles in the atmosphere coupled with massive volcanic eruptions which also block out the sun with various particles. Even then, some life, humans included, will survive. Even if they don't, the world won't end. It will still exist, and go on as it has before, it may take millions of years until it has a plethora of flora and fauna, but it will continue until the sun destroys the entirety of the planet. And before it does, the planet will slowly boil and become a barren wasteland before it slowly succumbs to the heat and gravity of the sun. So in the end, I think T.S. Elliot was right. It will not end with a bang, but a whimper. Slowly boiling and getting pulled into the Sun until it's ripped apart by gravitational pull, probably turning into an asteroid belt. That's when the world will end, when it's nothing more than a bunch of rocks floating around a dying star.

I'm going to run through the list of plausible doomsday scenarios, so people can stop speculating.

30-40 years: Potential apocalyptic meteor strike...we have our eye on that one

5000-15000 years: Collision with plasma cloud that would break down the sun and earth's magnetic fields

700,000,000 years: The sun has been continually heating up; at this point the earth's oceans start boiling away

5,000,000,000 years: Sun becomes red giant potentially engulfing the earth; if it doesn't earth will still be a cinder and probably blown away when the sun goes nova

Hope that clears some things up.
