I really have to ask why you would go work for walmart, my life is pretty bad as it is but even I know better then to work there. (I'd really rather die then work there)
I can't believe I'm about to find myself defending the place, but having cashiered at a Wal-Mart store for over a year now (while in college), let me tell you the fact of the matter is that a Wal-Mart job is only as good or as bad as you make it. If you convince yourself that you'll be miserable when you're there, you'll be miserable, if you convince yourself that you'll be happy, you'll be happy. It's a strange environment that's just really good at feeding back to you any kind of attitude you bring to it.
Yeah, there are some stupid rules sometimes, and some of the customers are less than pleasant to deal with, but it's like that anywhere. This kind of attitude that says that it's a fate worse than death is a recipe for self-imposed sorrow. The fact of the matter is that most everyone has to work a job they'd rather not once or twice in their lives, it's just the way life works. You start at the bottom and move up, and in all honesty if you think that Wal-Mart is as bad as it gets, you'll probably find that life has some very very nasty surprises in store for you, cause it can get a hell of a lot worse.
OP, if I can give you some advice, just try to go in with a smile on your face. Treat working at Wal-Mart like a game with some strange rules, and try not to take it too seriously or too lightly. If you're friendly with everyone, you'll find that just enough of them will be friendly back to get you through the day. But also remember not to take anything that happens too personally. Unlike other stores where people go because they want to go, Wal-Mart is a place where people go because they have to if they want to have something to put in the pantry, and it means that people come in regardless of their mood, and if they're in a bad one, they'll bring it with them. If they mistreat you, keep in mind that they're probably just having a really bad day and letting off some steam. Yeah, you don't deserve it, but they're gonna give it to you anyways, and if you take the opportunity to learn how to take abuse and treat it like it's nothing, you'll find it can be a very useful skill to have.
Also remember that Wal-Mart is a really strange and interesting place if you look at it through the right eyes. Everyone goes to Wal-Mart, which makes it a people watcher's dream. You can and will run into every type of person imaginable. You'll find people who are happy, people who are sad, people who are angry, calm, people with mental disorders, drug addictions, people who are surprisingly inspirational, and people you'll never see coming. If you pay attention you'll actually learn quite a bit about how to live. You'll see how the people who are happy with their lives act and treat others, and you'll see how people who are just the opposite act and treat others, and you'll start to see that there are some common patterns which arise. If you pay attention, working at Wal-Mart can teach you things about the world you'd never have thought to learn in a grocery store. Yeah, you'll work for Wal-Mart, but you can work for yourself too, and if you take advantage of the genuinely strange qualities of the place you'll find you can get a lot more out of it than a pay check.
Working at Wal-Mart will test your will at times. You'll find people who will get under your skin, and situations which will test your problem solving abilities. And you really can make of it what you will. You'll find a lot of your fellow employees just shut down, they come to work and act like zombies, but I urge you not to fall into this trap. I realize it's "not cool" to act like you're having fun at work, but here's the real deal, is that some day you're going to die and you've only got so much time to live in. The unfortunate fact of life is that often you'll have to spend your precious time doing one thing (like working at Wal-Mart), when you'd much rather be doing something else, there is NOTHING you can do about that. What you can do, however, is choose how you react to your situation. You can sink into it, and spend what precious little time you have making yourself miserable because you're at Wal-Mart, or you can rise above it, and take advantage of a unique situation. It's up to you of course, but I find life's a lot more pleasant when you spend time making lemonade out of 4958 (...that's the code for lemons. You'll probably need to know that.)
