There are two ways to critisize a piece of media; you can smash it with a sledgehammer, giving it a quick and painless death, or you can torture it with needles by pinpointing the areas where it could've improved upon itself.

Today's needle-torture victim will be God of War 3.

I love this game, but I'm also very critical on many points. One of these points being The Hermes Boots.
I didn't mind the concept, but the way it was implemented left much to be desired. Now, the way you use the boots in the game is by holding the L2 button and then holding and releasing the X button to dash forward or on the walls with the glowy footprints. But controlling the boots this way felt very slow and sluggish to me.
So, my idea on how I would've improved upon this concept is by buttonmapping the boots to the L2 button and the right analoge stick: Hold L2 for item access and use the right analoge stick to dash in whatever direction you want. So instead of doing the usual dogde roll, you would do a dash if you held the L2 button.

Feel free to call bullshit on this idea if you see any faults with it. And tell me what you would've improved in God of War 3 and how you would've improved it. This can be anything; story, combat, level design, visual design. But no bashing, please.

I call bullmonkey!

Holding down L2 for it would make it very hard to fight. The thing about the dodge roll is you dodge and then quickly pull of combos. But if you'd have to hold down L2 for it, there would be a very big possibility that you either forget or don't release your finger from the L2 button quick enough, resulting in you using the head of Helios or the bow of Apollo instead of making a combo.

I would have improved the boss fight with Cronos. He wasn't big enough.

Oh he was really fucking huge, but remember that it took Kratos 3 days to climb unto the temple. He needed to be waaaaaaay bigger.

make more finishing move animations and try to make the game feel somewhat different. If you played one you played them all.

I didn't mean an evasive dash, but the same ramming dash as in the game only preformed quicker and with more precise control. Holding L2 and then holding and releasing the X button to only dash straight ahead of you felt to constricted and to much like a chore.

And I would've made the Chronos fight bigger to, but by making Chronos' insides as much level as the outside. So ,instead of just slidding down his gullet, you would make your way through his organs destroying them as you went along.

I would have probably changed the dodge animations once you get the boots of Hermes, air dodging is quite worthless since most of Kratos' effective attacks are on the ground rather than the air. It was too awkward to be jumping into the air and then manipulating the right stick to dodge when you really needed a double jump to get enough height to get anything out of the air dash in the first place. I thought the flying mini-game was overused and got annoying after the second or third time I had to navigate the chain of balance.

The next major change I would make would be to separate the magic and the weapons, the Blades of Exile are still the best weapon in the game and putting the magic together with the weapons just meant that they had to make every other weapon a clone of the Blades of Exile because it has the best functionality given the combat engine. But don't worry it gets far worse than that; the entire combat engine renders combos pointless for most of the larger enemies because it is too dangerous to start them because you cannot cancel them and will probably end up getting an Axe to the face for your trouble. This again pushes the Blades of Exile to the top of the heap because it has the best range in the game which means you get hit less. Dodge canceling would really help in God of War and make combos more useful overall.

The ending was stupid, just plain stupid. Was there any point in not giving Athena what she wanted? You already destroyed the world, it couldn't get much worse than that!

Have an instant replay option for all those epic battle scenes. I want to watch those scenes without having to press the buttons.

That would be awesome.
