You don't show up to a stadium and root for the opposing team, and only someone looking to pick a fight would do it so flamboyantly. Hey everyone look at me in the opposing teams gear, does that piss you off? I would have never guessed that it would.

I don't wear atheist shirts in church, and I don't go to stadiums dressed up in the other teams jersey and sit in the home team section either.

I was at a college football game today with a girl I've recently started dating, and I was wearing the rival team's colors because I like that team. Now I naturally expected some shit talk for doing so, but what ended up happening was the entire first half a fan from the home team pelted me with ice and popcorn. When I asked him to stop, he told me to **** off. He kept doing it, and the girl asked me "aren't you gonna get him to stop?" I confronted him again, yelling at him that he wouldn't be throwing anything if his friends weren't around to back him up, and he said "you ain't gonna do crap you skinny ***got." I gave him the finger and walked away.

I didn't want to get in a fight because I didn't want to get thrown out of the stadium or arrested by security, but now I feel embarrassed and totally emasculated in front of this girl. I feel like guys think its okay to start shit with me because I have a skinny build (6'1, 160 lbs), and they think I won't fight back. It happens quite often when I play basketball or go out to bars

The way I see it, you didn't really have too many valid options. If you tried to throw a football at his face, he probably would've caught it and thrown it back at you. You probably should've responded with something like, "Yeah? I don't see you doing anything, either. All you're doing is throwing bits of popcorn and ice cubes at me. Maybe if you come down from there and actually try to throw some punches at me, I'll take you seriously." Then just walk away and see if he does anything. But whatever. If I was in your situation, I probably would've done something similar to what you did.

Personally, I know how you feel. I' ma pretty skinny guy that people have tried before to start shit with just because they thought they could get away with it. When with friends or even a girlfriend I usually just talked shit and if things escalated I would try my best. lol.
Outside of functions, such as in/around my neighborhood or places I hung out I'd just try and fight them. It's not I have something to prove, it's just that I fealt I had to show people that I wasn't a pushover.
In your case I would have done the exact same thing. It's better to walk away than get in trouble just because some douche-bag thought he was a hard ass.

I get myself into trouble because I'm sometimes loud and people seem to take offense but I haven't been in a fight since I was a kid because I've always talked my way out of a beating! You did the right thing because chances are high that if you'd fought his friends would have helped him and these kinds of things can get out of hand and people end up seriously hurt! But you should really ask yourself why you wore what you wore where and when you wore it! (mouth full) You even said you expected some shit for it! Sports fans can be rabid. A fist to the face is generally only best if you have any remote amount of force behind it. There's a way to drag a person's reputation through the mud that will be that much more of a slap in the face.
