How would you make a M rated first party Nintendo franchise?

Create Dead Space again but this time replace Isaac with Samus Aran and the necromorphs with space pirates. Heck we could do a continuation of Metroid fusion and just have X-parasite monsters or something. Add some blood there, a little scariness here and we got ourselves a M rating!

But i suppose out of the core franchises i agree that Metroid is probably the most fitting. Darken the story up, add some gore and guts and there you go.
It could work I guess
After finishing Metroid Fusion I thought about premise to next 2 sequels
In first sequel you take control of another bounty hunter who tries to track down Samus
In the process you find her trapped by some private corporation that studies her and figure out what exactly chozo did to her
Intent is to provide solution for military to develop their own supersoldiers
In the end you capture Samus, but before handing her to Federation, protagonist is contacted bu remaining chozo and offered larger reward for Samus.

In second sequel one of research sites that was applying knowledge gained by studying Samus, goes silent.
Federation sends few other bounty hunters (including protagonist of previous game) but they get wiped out
Bounty on Samus is dropped and her assistance is required on this research site to contain situation
And things get really bad.
But I guess that would remind Dead Space a little too much
Agreed. Metroid Fusion probably one of my top 5 games of all time and when you get right down to it, the game is pretty dark. There's an evil clone of Samus, zombie researchers, abandoned space station etc. An HD first person squeal would be awesome. I'm glad to see people supporting Metroid. I always felt certain moments in the Prime series would have had more impact if there was a little more graphic content.

Rather than see their child friendly games turn grimdark mature I'd rather see something new from them. Unless it's related to Eternal Darkness, which is an M game they made and an awesome horror game at that.
Also this^. Nintendo made an interesting game for the Gamecube called "Gheist" that was a scifi, puzzle, fps, horror game. I never played when it came out but a friend who knows me well got it for me a while after it came out. While it was kind of broken and flawed, the game had some interesting ideas (and a Metroid cameo for the win) and I'd to see Nintendo make more games like that. If they did, I'd probably own a Wii U right now

I probably wouldn't, as it doesn't fit Ninty's mold. However, if I did, it'd likely be a mature RPG like the original Shadow Hearts, or a sci-fi horror adventure that was equal parts Metroid and Eternal Darkness.

The issue is not about the rating, it's about the quality of the game. Link, Samus, Mario, etc are all proven characters with proven franchises, and it's time to do something different.

Nintendo invented so many things that it's nigh impossible to create something with the impact of the games they created in the 80's. It's not about the rating system, it's about the game design.

I'm not sure, there are so many things that could make a game M rated. If I had to pick one I think I'd pick a Legend of Zelda that had a story about Hyrule being embroiled in war.

I think Nintendo has just let other devs make M rated games. Like Mad World RE4 and conduit. I'm pretty sure they gave those devs money specially rare for Golden Eye

I'd just give Mario the ability to drink alcohol, gamble and romance male and female characters with a tasteful fade to black. Instant M rating.

You wouldn't even have change the games at all, just add these pointless diversions as a mini-games on top of the existing games. It doesn't have to be gratuitous or graphic, but the mere inclusion of alcohol, gambling or sex seemed to be enough to get some of the Fable games a M rating in the US, so it should be pretty easy to make any game M rated with these simple additions.

Alternatively make a darker Zelda, I could see that happening, Twilight Princess had the graphics down, just need a darker story and we're set.
EA has stopped support for the Wii U but SEGA is in a partnership with Nintendo and SEGA still has the Aliens license. So they could do a Aliens Metroid spin off. Like Elien Ripley somehow gets Samus's suit or a Metroid gets infected by a Zenomoprh. I believe fans liked the DS aliens game and people said it was like metroid

Actually I'd say just change the art style of the Zelda games to something more prone to blood. The 3d series has been pretty close to dark territory, especially the n64 games. The blood and corpses won't make them more mature, but it'll get that M rating.

That or have the government turn on Samus, sending non-robot humanoids she has to kill.

Before it could be done, I think the characters would need to be fleshed out a bit more. I've seen tons of fans take a darker approach to Nintendo characters, simply by adding dark content. Nintendo characters tend to be very simple. Link is the hero of desnitny. Mario's that guy who saves the princess from Bowser. It kind of showed in Smash Brothers Brawl, in the SubSpace Emissary quest, where none of the characters had any spoken lines, simply because very little had really been established about who they were, with the exception of characters like Samus and Fox McCloud. This leaves tons of blanks to fill in with dark and/or mature content. Maybe Link can't speak because of some horrible disaster where he witnessed the death of his parents as a child by Ganondorf. Perhaps have a theme of him learning to overcome his past. He can bond with the side-characters and when it's time to face Ganondorf at the end, he could shout out something badass, either before the start of the fight or right before dealing the finishing blow.

Zelda could certainly be bumped to a T
They already did that. It was called Twilight Princess and it was awesome!

OT: I'm gonna have to go with the general consensus here and say Metroid. It already has that Halo-ey feel to it. All it needs is a darker tone and some gore and BOOM! You got yourself an M rated game that is essentially Halo for the WiiU.
Huh. Could have sworn it was E. Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly; it was dark, but I don't really think there was anything in it that was inherently child inappropriate. Weird.
I beg to differ.

Ok, yeah ... that part was a little creepy.

If I remember correctly, it was that cutscene that actually is the entire reason that Twilight Princess got a rated T rating in the first place.

A game set in the Metroid Universe, except you're a GFed Marine.

Survival Horror here we come, you have all the bullets, too bad you're facing physics violating horrors from another dimension, all you have to to do is survive until 'she' gets here, good luck.

I'd have it start like a normal FPS, you and your squad, Space Pirates getting blown away etc, then sometime around the third level everything should go to shit and leave you alone at the bottom a deep hole with nothing but Metroids and something else stalking the caverns around you.
It sounds like a better version of A:CM... or what A:CM should have done only adding the distress call in the beginning to make it more "canon" to the overall Alien universe...

That's kinda funny to me... The whole concept of a rating given to a game because of just "one" cutscene... No wonder they say making a M-rated game is SO easy... (LOL)

OT: Get Platinum to do that M-rated game... They could do it after Beyonetta 2 comes out and it would be a one-shot IP and nothing else... (like Eternal Darkness, basically...)

Yeah, I'm all for the more graphic Fire Emblem. Or more Fire Emblem in general.

You can always go play Darksiders 1&2 if you want a mature Zelda game.

Other than that, Nintendo games are so "child friendly" that I can't think of anything that would make their current franchises mature.
Kirby: Throw some Madoka/Daybreak illusion style horror as an innocent mind like Kirby enters the mind of someone that is so mentally broken and make him completely oblivious despite the lore logs stating otherwise.
Would play.
Seisen no Keifu managed that. Its ASOIAF that ends happily.
True, though I'm hoping for something more modern these days, no problem replaying the classics though.
