How would you make Masterchief a more compelling and flawed character?

I was talking about Halo: The Fall of Reach which was published a couple months before Halo: Combat Evolved.
hold on, back up a second here, Fall of Reach came before Halo: Combat Evolved?

1 - Normal Player. Just playing for the fun of virtual death and destruction. May or may not play campaign and may or may not watch the cutscenes.

2 - Halo Player. Appreciates the game's story and presentation for what it is. May or may not look into other Halo media.
I never skip cutscenes unless I already seen them, I have to have some kind of context with my games

I thought he was too emotionless. I'm sick of the stoic emotionless protagonist of FPS games that are supposed to be manly, I guess. I would have been able to empathize more with a character who was screaming in terror at the same time I was the first time I encountered the flood.
Master chief is like the only character I know of who is completely emotionless. All other FPS or TPS heros have seemed to feel loss or seem to panic at certain points. Even in the MANLY gears of war series.

I did play all games, didnt notice he had any emotion or personality.. and frankly the grunts are much more interesting than he is.

How can he be interesting is all he says is the basic badass-speech and the occasional dark joke. Hes like Steven Seagal; only two emotions: Angry and silently angry.

I don't think that Master Chief needs to be flawed to make the game good.

If anything they should continue his hollowness to better make it known how he was created just for war, to have no emotions and just kill everything in sight. That would be a better commentary on the nature of war and how the soldiers are trained.

He's not human. He's a murderer.

I'd tell you to stop turning everything into some sort of political commentary/debate, but you wouldn't listen anyway.

Give him a heart. Make him comfort dying enemies, have him disagree with Cortana's orders, ANYTHING!

I think he's alright as he is.

Halo is empowering to play, because you assume the role of a blank, cold blooded superpowered killer.

For a straight shooter, these lesser developed protagonists are just fine with me.

I would make him take off his mask to reveal that the master chief is a girl with a male voice box in her helmet...

THE PLOT THICKENS!!!

If you read the Spartan Backstory everything masterchief is , is because of the Spartan program, the training and enhancements caused created these "cyborgs" who could fire with dead on accuravy and only follow orders.

Master Chief is not exactly human plus his brain is altered to show little emotion since he is the in the 3rd wave of spartans (forgive me if that is incorrect)

I don't know if it's just me, but all Masterchief did since the first Halo game was be a completely unbreakable badass who was nigh invincible and respected and revered by everyone around him, also being incapable of showing any emotion at all besides determination and conviction.

In the first Halo game, Masterchief was a fearless soldier who was an expert at combat but didn't seem to know much else. Masterchief was somewhat impatient, a bit dimwitted, clueless at times, and easy to manipulate. Cortana was usually the one making the decisions for him and pointing out his objectives while taking care of all the technical work hacking systems and providing data. I'm not saying Masterchief should of stayed this way for the rest of the series. His character has to develop throughout the series, obviously, but making him a completely bland and generic super soldier wasn't the best idea, in my opinion.

So, how would you write his character to be more interesting?
Following simply the title and not the post above (sorry) I'd say give him a drinking addiction, imagine instead of medkits you pickup alcohol bottles and then an animation of him bringing the bottle up to drink while hoards of enemies shoot at you come and then you have to fight them dazed. Personally I'd like MasterChief alot more this way. =]

You have to remember that his character was raised since he was like 6 to be what he is: an elite soldier. Leading and fighting is what he knows. You also have to remember that for all he knows, all his buddies he trained with, they're all dead. Nearly everyone he cares about, gone. You don't suppose that might be something to kill emotion a little bit? Maybe all that's left for him is to finish the fight against the covenant, and as a disciplined soldier, he's a man of action, not words. And as a leader, your emotions are controlled, as your emotions affect the morale of the team. And he's not completely devoid of feeling. He went back for Cortana, didn't he? Anyhoo, bungie did a terrible job of actually conveying all this upon you people, but it's all there between the lines. He is badass. But a lot of his success is luck too.

Completely disagree on the whole "he's badass so he doesn't need to be human or have an actual personality". I mean it works if you want to keep the games a bit more shallow and accessible but as long as you want to create a blockbuster that inspires people, you'll need to try a little harder. Just because someone is raised from the ground up to be something and not have emotions doesn't erase them. Often if you look at the stories of forced pro-athletes or kids with dominant parents then it just makes the story more tragically interesting and intense.

I mean look at Rambo. He seems to be such a badass throughout the whole first movie. Killing soldiers, building traps and escaping caves. He's inspiring for every little boy that watches the film. Then in the end of the movie he breaks down. It's such a great scene that comes out of nowhere and despite (or perhaps especially because) Stalone is kind of a wierd actor it really works. Much more well-rounded character this way and much more likable through the human touch in my opinion. He also kicks more ass than Master Chief could ever hope to.

Give him the ability to speak first off, I mean come one Designers you must realize that unless the atmosphere is amazing. Non talking blokes are really hard to feel sorry for, when you tell us to :/
He does talk throughout the series, not much mind you but he has the ability
