Hah, 2007 is modern. Id say actual modern gamers probably liked 2015 the best, awesome year for game releases. 2016 on the other hand was a year of dissapointment. One after the other games released turned out to be shit. One of my biggest dissapointments was how bad mafia 3 turned out. Oh and yeah all those metagames and shit like that didnt help much. At least Watch Dogs 2 was arguably best ubisoft game ever.

I give it a A- and only because of no real advances in hardware and graphics. I got the 8 Gig RX 480 and it is outperforming an HD 7970 3 Gig I have in another room but not to the point that you'd really notice. It certainly isn't 1986 NES, 1990 SNES, 1995 N64, 2000 Xbox, 2006 360. Buuuuuut....

While I've finished virtually NOTHING yet:

Rise of the Tomb Raider
Forza Horizon 3
Doom
Titanfall 2
Uncharted 4
Gears 4
Witcher 3 and all DL
Quantum Break
Just Cause 3
Battlefield 1

Much better than last year IMHO.

Biggest complaint:
I got Battleborn and I think the worst aspect of it: a long training campaign in which checkpoints aren't being saved so that I have to restart from the very beginning every time! I haven't even gotten to play with/against anyone yet!

Both 2016 and 2015 were really great in my opinion. Current-gen really started to hit it's stride after an incredibly long and disappointing start. 2015 had Bloodborne, Witcher 3, Batman, MGS5 and Fallout 4 that I really enjoyed. 2016 had Dark Souls 3, Dishonered 2, Doom and FF15 that was finally released(including a host of other titles).

So yeah, not bad. Espescially compared to 2013-14. Can't really remember any standout titles from those years.

To compare years to Doctor Who for a second, 2016 was the Peter Davison to 2015's Tom Baker. Definitely good, but nothing compared to what we witnessed last year. Hopefully 2017 won't turn out to be the Sixth Doctor.

It was an okay, middle-of-the-road year for me.

Played some good games, some of which didn't fully meet my expectations. Nothing really blew me away, but on the other hand, I didn't play anything that severely disappointed me either.

I thought that 2016 was a really good year overall. While it lacked any games that I'd call "great" I played more "very good" new games in 2016 than I can recall in any other year, ever.
Stuff that made my best-of lists in 2015 wouldn't even fit into a top 10 in 2016... But at the same time, there was nothing that I liked as much as Undertale (2015) or Freedom Planet (2014). Lots of very good games is nice and all, but 2016 just lacked "that one game" that I loved more than all the others.

...And, no, I didn't play all of 1994's or 2007's games that year.

It was fine. Not the best of the last decade, not the worst of the last decade either.

It had the same pattern than the last year, in which almost everything interesting came from the indie scene, but with some games like DOOM and Overwatch from the AAA side seem to balance things out, unlike the drought that was last year.

I only got started on current gen gaming last week with the Uncharted 4 bundle. About 14 chapters in and it looks outstanding, while playing better than ever. My main gripe though would be they could've done more with platforming/traversing environments. I was hoping there would be more dynamic climbing, as there are many places you should be able to get to but can't because he doesn't jump high enough or want to crawl over rocky surfaces. It would've been great if the jump mechanic was on the negative edge, so that jump height could be determined by how long X was held before releasing. Contextual running was done fairly well, but here again it would've been better to have a dedicated run mechanic ala TLoU.

Other than that, so far the game is holding my interest, and combat has definitely improved. Everything sounds much better than past titles as well, especially in terms of gunshots and explosions. Nate is also probably the most detailed playable character model I've seen.

I've bought fewer new games this year than in the past, but with the likes of Stardew Valley, The Witcher 3's expansions, Fallout 4 and it's DLCs, I've had plenty to do. I would say that there haven't been as many big releases this year I've been hyped about since I tend to prefer sandbox games, but with the 3 I mentioned there's been plenty to keep me focused. 2017 seems to be in a bit of a dry spell for hype for me as well since the big names in RPGs, for western PC releases at least, don't have anything big announced yet. I am kind of holding out some hope for some Square Enix love on the PC at some point after Sony gives their leash some slack, I'd love to see some of the newer Final Fantasy games and remakes come out there, as well as Dragon Quest Builders.

I'd rank 2000 as the best year simply because the best FPS game of all time, Perfect Dark, was released in 2000.

2016 was a good year for time related games. Gemini: Heroes Reborn. Quantum Break. And of course Dishonored 2 and Titanfall 2.

And 2016 was the year that the atmospheric rough gem Homefront: The Revolution was released. So it's a pretty good year. On par with 2007, when atmospheric rough gem STALKER was released.

I own a Wii U, a 3DS and a PC that can play point-n-click adventures from years ago so...I mean...it's not like I've missed out on too much stuff on the real consoles? I thought Final Fantasy XV would have been what made me get a PS4 and ultimately that's what I'll end up getting when I get that console but other than that there's nothing really I'm too interested in playing on that (or an equivalent) format. I'm curious about Overwatch but my internet is garbage (a compounding factor more than anything...at the moment), Dishonored 2 looks alright, Doom is probably what I'm most excited for console-wise...I still want to want a PS4 and honestly, I'm probably going to hold off on getting one until after I get a Switch. I still see the PS4 and Xbone as being a means to play optimized versions of PS3/360 games and that's enforced by the fact that a lot of games launching on the new consoles are still coming out on the old ones. There is an ever-expanding pool of games I'm looking forward to playing though once I finally DO upgrade...though at this point I'm better off waiting for complete editions of them to launch this coming year or next year. This was another C or C- year in gaming for me.

I couldn't make up a top 10 considering in another thread I think I came out with 7 2016 titles that I played and was willing to say nice things about. I could probably work out a top-5 though:

Pokemon Sun (and Moon I guess) was the new Pokemon. I really liked how the Trail Captains and Kahunas felt like actual members of their communities and the overall Alola region in general. I liked how the game was story-driven too but once I hit the end I just couldn't muster the enthusiasm to do much post-game content...at all.

Pony Island was a great game! It was a January game though but those generally don't count since they're usually long forgotten by mid-November when people have already decided their top-10 lists of that year.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess shouldn't count since it's a remaster but it was an excellent game on the Gamecube, it was probably a decent game on the Wii and on the Wii U it continues to be excellent but this time it's excellent without someone having wiped Vaseline on the camera lens.

Dragon Quest VII is a game that I'm about 25 hours in and I've only just got to a point where I can change my vocation and NPCs are talking about some Demon King. I like the DQ games but I don't usually get through them completely...this could be the second one I beat!

Tokyo Mirage Session #FE has a really stupid title but it's the best 2016 game I played. It's got a traditional, turn-based combat system but it still encourages experimentation and offers some pretty neat combo attacks. It's not overly Fire Emblem-like but it's still a really fun game that takes on unique subject-matter compared to other JRPGs.

There were only 3 purchases for me this year:
Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak
Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void
Rise of the Tomb Raider

Which have all been simply amazing. But other then that it's been a sparse year.
