How young is to young to date someone?

Here is my problem. Im 5 4 age 19 and I meet this beautiful girl about my hight. She is really into me and we talk alot. Problem is I just found out shes only 14!

So my question for you fellow Escapist is how young is to young to date someone? Please help...

EDIT: I mention here breast size to explain why I was mislead not to be perv.

I'd say aged 19 is too old to date someone who is 14, and as much as I hate sounding like I am in my sixties, if you feel the need to talk about her breast size in this kind of topic, then you are probably less mature than she is.

You go around telling people that there is this 14 year old girl you like with great boobs and people are going to look at you a lot more badly than if you said there is a 14 year old girl you like who you really get along with. Obviously this doesn't change the fact that you still consider a 14 year olds breast size to be important enough to discuss in a thread asking about appropriate relationships, so it doesn't make a difference really because you still shouldn't be with her if that's the kind of thing you have on your mind.

In the UK this would amount to paedophilia (or something very similar). 18 is legally an adult, 16 is the age of consent.

I put to a two year limit on who I date. Both younger and older. So I would only date girls between 16 and 20.

Also you are over 18 and she is still a minor. It is very illegal to have sex with her or date her for that matter. If you did it would classify you as a pedophile in the eyes of the law.

Erm... where I come from (not sure about the rest of the state, or even the country...) it's illegal for someone who is an adult (over 18) to date someone under 18, on the grounds of it qualifying for statutory rape. (I don't even know...)

Then, there are people think you have to stay in your age group.

For example, I'm about 6 months away from 16, and the girl I fancy is barely 14, and her friends keep telling her to push me away because of the age gap.


All depends on what is legally and socially acceptable where you live, if you ask me.


Also, while a teenager, I think a 3 year gap is the maximum, in terms of what is deemed as acceptable.

the real key, as a teenager, is that if you are a male over the age of consent, you should never, ever date a girl below age of consent. as the saying goes, 15 will get you 20.

OT: hmm, with my mates we have a 2 year either way boundary. so we're all 18, im dating a 20-year old and my mates going out with a 16 year old. this is a bit past that..

honestly id say wait and think. shes very young and no matter outward appearances if you move too fast or break up it could hurt her. Im not calling you misogynistic but you mention her breasts: if your considering her for a relationship on that basis i wouldnt do it.

however you talk a lot, and if you genuinely feel something, fuck eveyone else and go for it.

I don't think it's wrong to date her (so long as you like her and it's not just because you think she has great boobs), but you're gonna have to be careful that you stay responsible considering she's a minor. You'll also need to make it clear to her that although you do really like her, you have no plans to break the law, just in case she has any ideas about dating older guys.

If you like her and want to date her, fine. But remember, you're not just the boyfriend in this relationship, you're the responsible adult.

OP, If you're over 18 and she's under, don't go there. At least, not if you're in the States. Still, 19/14 sounds like an awkward split, legally.

I'm in my late 20s so 5 years doesn't really make much difference for me, but where you are it's a bit more of an issue (at least if she's 5 years YOUNGER, which she is). Tread carefully.

Exactly! I was just so frustrated with making this thread over and over again due to complications that I didn't take the time to choose my words more carefully.

As many have pointed out halfing your age and adding 7 is a good indication when in doubt.

That being said if you truely like each other and get along as well as you claim it is likely you will persue this relationship regardless of advice (teenage hormones and love can be a ***** like that ^^)

However i'd stongly urge you to tread carefully, no disrespect to her but being so young she may not fully understand the workings of a adult relationship and as such a break up could potentially be incredibly distressing for her.
On the cynical side of things you don't need to look far see horror stories about young girls twisting the truth in order to get out of awkward situations when confronted about such contraversial relationships by parents etc.

(a horrible horrible generalisation i know but i feel the situation merits bringing such outcomes to the discussion)
