so I'm going through my 360's back catalog and I'm thinking about playing it. It would be my frist DMC game, and really first action game ever in this style.

How is it?

It was my first DMC game. I enjoyed it a lot. It was a long time ago however, so might have forgotten the annoying parts.... I think there was some puzzling that i didnt like...

Still, its DMC, it makes you feel awesome while playing it :p

I really only played through all the DMC's once, and it was a while ago, but I remember it being the third best of the first four, and had my favorite cutscenes too. I'm not going to talk about the new DMC; not because I don't like it, I do, quite a bit, but it'll be easier in reference to the first four.
Anyway, third out of four, that sounds like second worst, right?
I know that doesn't sound to good but the way I see it:

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
Devil May Cry
Devil May Cry 4
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Devil May Cry 2

Those first three (in the list, not in terms of release) I think are pretty close together in terms of quality, so don't think of it as second to last, think of it as first, second, and third finishing the race only seconds apart.
And fourth about an hour later.

It's alright, but the game is made twice as long by the simple trick of making the second half an entire backtrack. It's been a while since I played it but from what I remember the gameplay is still pretty good though. My favorite is still the original. In my recollection it wasn't such an all-out button masher like the rest of the games and it had the coolest setpieces and bosses.

I still consider it the benchmark for the hack and slash genre. The only flaw is having to do the game in reverse, but considering that's done with an entirely different character it's not even close to crippling. The main player has always been the fighting engine and that is deeper than just about any other game in its genre.

The backtracking halfway through is a disheartener. But at least you are now prepared for it, I did not endure such luxury. Great bosses, unique ideas and memorable encounters. Still a good game nonethless.

It's half of a good game.

The combat system is the best its ever been...for Dante, but you only play as Dante for 2/5 of the game, and Nero's combat is very simple and not particularly interesting (it's DMC lite).

The bosses are fun, but they get repeated 3 times each because the dev team didn't have the budget to make new ones (and the 2 best bossfights are the ones that don't get repeated). The levels also get repeated and half the game (all of Dante's sections) is just backtracking.

Basically the best way to describe the game is disappointing.

Pretty much depends on how much you are into the genre, it's pretty complicated and hard to get into, which gives it an interesting metagame, but playing at a low level gets dull after a while
The worst part of the game for me is everything before the bloody palace, you have to run around for a while with a very limited moveset, solving dull puzzles and platforming in-between fights, until you unlock the Bloody Palace, that's where the real fun begins
If you like the system, i don't, but most people like it, so you'll be okay if you like the genre and can get used to the controls

You sure about that? You fight them once as Nero, then once as Dante. Now im no expert on math, but im somewhat certain thats only one repeat.

You fight them once as Nero then once as Dante then again as Nero during the boss rush on the last level.

I'd definitely recommend it. Good action, and a good story, too. Plus, you get to play during the credits, which isn't something I see in other games that often.

It's a good game. Not as good as DMC 3, but in terms of the gameplay it's probably the best in the series.

And yes, there is a lot of backtracking and rehashing bosses, but none of that ever bothered me because even the previous games had quite a bit of backtracking. It only got annoying at the end with the boss rush, which was unnecessary.

Although if your looking for an entry point, I recommend starting with DMC 3, which was my entry point into the series, as well as a good one to start with if you're getting into stylish action games. You can always get the HD Collection, which has all the previous three. Just make sure to skip DMC 2.

Mediocre. Stick with action-adventure games. Most action games are shallow. The only thing they do well is the combat, but that gets pretty old pretty fast without anything else.
It really depends on how you approach it, if you blow through the story on normal\easy and call it a day then you'll sit thinking it was a pretty average experience, and have missed 90% of the game. The real fun begins when you start going through the harder difficulties and aiming for SSS rank where you need to start mastering how the character(s) play, and all the intricacies involved, which can easily turn the 8 hour experience into a 50 hour one depending on how far you want to go.

I would just say this: people hold DMC4 TOURNAMENTS. The things people can do with that fighting engine are insane. The amount of depth and nuance that is shown at high levels is a testament to that. And I would also say if action games were "shallow" then there is no way any fighting game on the planet should be any fun or be capable of holding an audience. And we all know how provably false that is.

Well I have only got onto DMC through friends consoles, DMC 4 is the only one I own myself.
Very straightforward game, you got a linear story you go through a linear level and you beat up lots of baddies. And the baddies are very damage spongy because they expect you want to pull off incredibly long move chains with all the various weapons, and on top of that there are even extra challenges you can find on the levels.

Also story and characters are very anime, as in you will have no fucking clue what it's all about but it's interesting to watch.
