The only feasible way I could see humanity uniting for a sinlge goal would be in a Watchmen esque scenario where an alien force invaded to conquer our planet as you mentioned. And even then, we'd most likely fuck it up given our inferior technology and venal, crass, skeptical and trecherous nature. As for the point of life, I believe there is none. Existential Nihilism sure is a time saver, makes it much easier to just enjoy our pointless existence rather than try and analyse it.

Edit: The Hell? Where'd the thread go?

We havent evolved enough to have a common cause and thats why we fight wars.
Once we've evolved enough to share a common ideal, something akin to socialism, where we can look after each other and ensure the best for all of mankind without greed or hatred, then we can probably think of something else to do.

Mind you, by that time Earth will probably be in melt down and instead of fighting ourselves we'll be getting in our spaceships and blowing something else up instead.

An existentialist crisis for an entire species eh?
I think that's why we fight with each other; it's not to ensure "evolutionary" supremacy, but because we instinctively realize that there is absolutely no rational end goal for life; so we invent/choose our own.

So many similar, yet individual goals all conflicting with each other..

The only universal goal for humanity is to survive. Not to help other people survive, but for you and your family to live, and live how you want to. Some poor guy starving to death in Jakarta isn't going to give a damn about global warming or a cure for cancer. Thinking about humanity's future is for people who don't have to worry about their own future.

Apparently our goal is to completely trash our planet and drive all life, including our own to extinction.

In a more up-beat view, Steven Hawking says:

"Today we still yearn to know why we are here and where we came from. Humanity?s deepest desire for knowledge is justification enough for our continuing quest. And our goal is nothing less than a complete description of the universe we live in."

At the moment the only goal of humanity as a whole seems to be to exploit the systems in place to acquire wealth and power or influence.

I think we'd need a threat that threatens everyone simultaneously before we as a species have a unified goal.

T'would be nice if humanity tried to emulate the idolized future of Star Trek somehow. I dunno man, the future is always a mystery to me.

1) To advance communication technology to the point that we can share processing power with other human beings.
2) To increase our knowledge until we know everything there is to know.
3) Spread life.

Humanity's objective is evidently to ensure the survival of our species. This means utilising science and technology to save human lives and extend human life expectancies, avoiding nuclear war and, eventually, the colonisation of space.

Find new ways to blow each other up!! it seems that the only time we actually advance in technology a significant amount is when we are blowing each other up: last century, there were two world wars... and we went from horses and carts to spaceships and nuclear bombs... even games are based on blowing stuff up... :(
