Humanity is on the verge of extinction (which side do you pick?)

Okay Escapists allow me to set the scene:

Humanity is slowly dying; there is no long term hope for the species. Though you are one among untold billions humanity itself is in the process of a bloody civil war and under siege from all sides by a myriad of unallied hostile alien races.

You are an elite squad Sergeant with a handful of highly trained and well equipped men at your command. The soldiers will follow whatever command you give to the end. Who do you declare for?

Humanity: Perhaps if you perform a herculean effort you can bring hope back to an embattled race. If that is impossible then in your view every second humanity survives is a blessing or perhaps you just want to make the opposing factions bleed for every step towards Earth they take. Every other option is high treason against your very species in your opinion.

Rebels: Humanity is failing, now is your chance to seize power. Screw the species; your system was taken by force to begin with why would you want to help them now? How you intend to weather the storm of alien genocide soon to happen is unknown. To you your home system/planet is all and you would be willing to sacrifice the species as a whole for a chance to keep it safe.

Aliens: With so many alien races present you feel your best chance is to try to negotiate you and your men's survival in return for military service and secrets. Your race may be extinct but you will survive for as long as you can stay in favour with whichever species you allied with. You would be betraying your own species for personal survival.

Heretics: Let the Galaxy BURN! You have no allegiance; like a mad dog your only desire is to cause as much chaos and carnage as you can before someone puts you down. Factions mean nothing to you, you just want to set the galaxy ablaze from end to end. [sub]BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD![/sub]

Other: I'm leaving this option open for anyone who wants to suggest another solution. I can see a few more but I'd like to see what you come up with.

First off, I don't trust myself with a squad of grunts. I would need a starship of my own. THAT, I would be able to fight with.

Now, as to whose side my starship would fight for...

I am a die-hard romantic, and that means I would fight for humanity to the last breath. As my ship came apart around me, I would drive it straight into the face of my enemies, attempting to end my life in a blaze of glory, hopefully taking the enemy flagship with me.

Does this scenario take place in the Warhammer 40,000 universe? I assume it is, given the setting and use of choice words and phrases.

If so, I would probably join the Tau Empire and fight as a Gue'vesa auxiliary unit. Sure the Tau may be authoritarian and heavy-handed at times, but they're still more tolerant than any other major faction. If my men and I could prove ourselves for the Greater Good, we might be able to inspire more humans to join the Tau, ensuring the survival of our species.

If that's not an option, I would probably do what the Soul Drinkers Space Marine chapter did; abandon the corrupt and intolerant Imperium and fight anyone who sought domination or enslavement of humanity. We would support local rebellions on human worlds wishing to be free of the Imperium's yoke, and wage war on the hostile aliens and heretics who might take advantage of the situation. Victory would be pretty much impossible, but at least I would know we gave our lives for a good cause.

Well spotted, it is the 40k universe but I was trying to mainstream as saying it was 40k based would shut a lot of people out of the thread. If you choose to you can read "highly trained and well equipped" as Space Marines.

Also don't the Tau neuter humans who join them? That's what they did with the humans at the end of the dark crusade anyway.

It basically boils down to who do you fight for? Your species? Your home? Yourself? or none and let it all go to hell in a hand basket.

Well, some people claim that was just Imperial propaganda. I personally think the Tau probably did neuter the human population, but only because the Imperium fought so fanatically for Kronus. Of course, it's heavily implied that the "canon" outcome is the Blood Ravens achieving victory, so there's a good chance the sterilization program didn't take place at all.

Basically I think if you willingly join the Tau without putting up a fight, you're allowed second-class citizen status (but you'll still enjoy more freedom than most other factions would allow). If you put up a fight and are forced to join later, they'll impose harsher restrictions, like doing time in labor camps and possibly forced sterilization.

I think i would make a peace-offering to the aliens. We will help them do whatever they plan to do as long as they help our species back on it's feet with idunno alien genetic technology. And if theyre hostile: sneak on one of their ships and hitchhike your way to their homeplanet to start a new life.

This would be my choice too. Or if that's not an option, then I'd pledge my allegiance to the Gods of Chaos.

First I would...negotiate because I hope that not all aliens want to eat/kill/dance around with my guts in there hands/make my into there slave or something worse and make my own group with aliens and humans and then slowly corrupt all alien and human politic then with my group of alien leaders and I we will rule the galaxy MOHAHAHAHA...If this dose not work I will try the same thing but kill of every alien leader that dose not agree...and if this not work then I will just take over there planets when there military forces are trying to take over earth and then hold there planets as hostages until they stop trying to take over earth and force them to give me alien technology but then it is the problem with civil war but that I will stop in the best way during that time.

I'd probably side with the aliens, seeing as how Mass Effect rocks so many faces. Who knows, maybe I could pal up with a kick-ass Turian?

Humanity has been upon the brink of extinction before. 70,000 years ago an event occured which left fewer than 2000 human beings upon the planet. These 'cavemen' endured and 70000 years later here we are the pinnacle of all species upon this planet.

We shall endure...

I side with humanity and any god or alien willing to help out.

Heretics seem the only way to survive because if there are untold HOSTILE alien races then they're not going to negotiate, it says in the title, humanity is going extinct so hertics seem not to be targeted that much.
