Hey guys, its my birthday today and at 12:31 this morning, I was officially 16!

Now, I've gotten tons of people to be excited for me and its because of this age in particuallar. But I want to know why.

I don't get the big deal with 16. I get that you finally are able to drive (I am probably the only teenager who doesn't give a fuck about driving) and that in most other places besides America, you become "legal age" and are able to do everything you can do at 18 here, but, I live in America and that don't mean shit now.

So, I ask, whats the big deal with this age? What makes it different? I didn't wake up today and feel completely different (I didn't expect to) and I don't look any different than I did a week ago, so whats the deal?

And, for discusion's sake, what was your best/worst birthday?

Because usually at the age of 16 you are officially qualified for hot sweet sex.

My best birthday was probably my 15th. I barricaded myself inside my room with my girlfriend. ^_^ My friends, including an arse who was high on ecstasy, were left outside.

I don't remember a worst birthday, because I always love my birthday.

Yay! You can now buy beer!
...in Germany.
Sorry, dude.

Well, I guess, being allowed to drive really is the only big difference then.

I don't know why 16 is so special.
My worst birthday was when I got completely hammered and broke my leg in 2 places after jumping off of my roof.

I'll answer your last question first. Who knows? I never made a big deal out of my birthday. The one last year (my 19th) was probably the worst if only because no one remembered (or because I never bothered to tell anyone). Didn't care much though.

16 really isn't very special. If you can drive, then good for you. It's just a convenient and quick way to get from point A to point B for me (and I didn't get my license till right before 18).

I've been 16 for almost a year now. I've got to say that qualified does not equal capable. Oooh no.

The whole consent thing. Also, here in Britain, at 16 you can legally trade scrap metal...

So, go find some scrap...?

My best birthday so far would have to be my 18th, 'twas an awesome night, and my worst would have to be my 19th, because I broke up with my girlfriend just a few days before. It sucked. Majorly.

Because long ago, someone came up with the phrase "sweet 16," it stuck, and now we are burdened with this idea that turning 16 is some wonderfully glamorous event.

I think my best birthday was my 18th. Only partly because I turned 18, which meant that I no longer needed parental approval to get games. It was mostly good because I spent it with my girlfriend, rather than a large group of people I only know from the periphery of my life.

In Sweden, 15 is more special. At that age, you can have sex and you're plausible for punishment in the court of law. I'm 15, and am yet to achieve any of them.

For me there is nothing. I don't even celebrate my birthday. When someone said ''Happy birthday.'' I just sort of ignored them. You shouldn't care about your age and i don't know why should you. You were not old enough to drive yesterday, but today you are old enough? That makes no sense.

Maybe you can combine the two?

In Holland, 16 is special for 2 things: legal alcohol, and you can get a moped certificate. I cared for neither of them, so I didn't care about 16 as well. Same with 18. Yes I can get a driver's licence and I can even buy liquor now, but I don't care about those, so I couldn't care less about my 18th birthday. I'm becoming 19 in a few weeks, I care as much about that as I cared about becoming 18. Birthday's are just an excuse for cake and presents/money for me, since I don't really like knowing that I'm a year closer to death.

Also, on a completely unrelated matter: happy birthday!

happy birthday dude,

I'm 19 currently, living in America, and you know what the big jump from 17 - 18 meant for me

not a goddamn thing

I don't smoke, I don't play the lottery, I don't buy porn(yay internets)

the biggest difference is now I'm careful about the girls I date
and thats it

How very very odd of Britain. Surely there is a reason they felt it necessary to stop young people from selling scrap.

My worst birthday was when I was 13 because a (15 year old) kid picked a fight with me at school because I told him to stop grabbing my friend's backpack and trying to take it. So he hit me, well I was about half a foot taller than him and (I was 6'2" at age thirteen :p) and broke his nose so I got suspended from school.

My best birthday was probably my 17th I actually met the woman who would become my wife years later on that day. It was the best just because it?s nice to know that?s when I met her. (Though we didn't EVEN start dating until 9 years later)
