Hurricane Irene is currently working its way across the east coast of the United States. The govenor of New Jersey has just declared a state of emergency since the storm is currently predicted to move over the state. This got me wondering about what fellow Escapists might be doing to prepare for this storm, or if it has passed by you all ready what your experience was?
As for me I'm all set. I have plenty of food, water, and emergency supplies to last for a week. I'm actually excited since we normally only get rain from hurricanes that land in the Carolinas, or as they swing out to sea.

Be careful all right? Get a radio that use batteries. Trust me, it comes in Handy.

We're already in a State of Emergency? News to me, I thought it wasn't supposed to hit until Sunday. I guess it would be prudent of me to get some bottled water and stuff.

I'm not looking forward to it, I live near a designated flood plane and Hurricane Floyd left us with several feet of water in the basement. Plus we've had a really awful summer, ground is already soaked so I imagine there will be flash flooding as well.

The hurricane is expected to reach New Jersey late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
The state of emergency as of now just means that the state is working to prepare in areas expected to be hit hardest by Irene, which as of now is Cape May, Atlantic, and Southern Ocean County.

Taken from a new article posted on nj1015.com
EWING, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey's governor is asking all visitors to its seashore to get out by midday Friday because Hurricane Irene is poised to be a "serious, significant event."
Gov. Chris Christie also is telling people planning to visit the shore this weekend to stay home.
Christie also is declaring a state of emergency. He did not make evacuations mandatory but says he would consider them if people didn't heed the state's warnings.
Irene is not expected to make landfall in New Jersey. But forecasters say it is likely to come close enough to the already rain-soaked state to cause flooding all across New Jersey. Winds also could take down power lines.

We had a big thunderstorm last night, that was probably related to the hurricane. The power went out for a couple minutes. But, thats it.

I live in Ontario, Canada. So yeah people living on the coast are probably gonna be hit pretty hard.

As of 4:15pm
A mandatory evacuation of Cape May County(New Jersey's southern most county) has been ordered starting on Friday.
A voluntary evacuation is in place right now.

MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDERED IN CAPE MAY COUNTY

Cape May County officials have ordered a mandatory evacuation of the county's barrier islands today...and a mandatory evacuation of the mainland on Friday. The order covers all 16 municipalities, including an estimated 1 million residents, visitors and workers. The storm is expected as much as 16 inches of rain and a record high tide of 14 feet to the area.

Wow, that sounds bad. I haven't really been paying attention to anything going on this summer, and I live in the Midwest.

Used to live in western Pennsylvania, though. Not during any huge storms, but... I still want storm street credz.

*Is from Pittsburgh*

Well, it thunderstormed early this morning and has been mostly clear since. Truly a catastrophic day, in which that we actually see the SUN now. The horror...the horror...

(We're too far inland. Hurricanes general lessen to tropical rainstorms before hitting us.)

As they say, "I ain't doing shit".

Living in Florida, I'm usually ALWAYS affected in some way by hurricanes on the east coast, but this one is missing Florida completely. Hell, I live on the west coast of Florida, so I probably won't even see any storms.

Lucky me, but unlucky New Jersey, I guess.

I'm holed up in my basement with canned food, a novel, and comics. Sure, I live in the outskirts of Göteborg, but you can never be too careful.

I'm pretty much guaranteed a direct hit (Virginia Beach, Virginia), but I'm not really up in arms about it. I've got all the supplies I need (flashlights, books, booze and a fully charged PSP), if something happens, it happens, nothing I can do about it right now, so why bother? I'll worry about it after the fact.

I have an uncle who lives in Florida, and he has weathered quite a few storms. It's odd now that the shoe is on the other foot. Like the others in the thread who are from the Northeast have said hurricanes are normally downgraded to tropical storms by the time they reach us.

The evacuations have moved further north and now include my girl friend.
The entire New Jersey coast including the Delaware Bay is now under a hurricane watch as the 5 p.m. All Atlantic County shore communities east of route 9, including Brigantine, Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate and Longport, are under a voluntary evacuation at 8 p.m. Thursday and a mandatory evacuation effective 6 a.m.

@Queen Michael, when the hurricane suddenly swings east and smashes into Europe the survivors will proclaim you King of Sweden because of your foresight.

Just remember guys, if it comes to it, drinking your own piss and pedigree chum are completely acceptable means of staying alive. Learned that during my time in the SEALS.

It rained for a few hours and it was pretty windy here in Western Massachusetts. I had to go to work and surprisingly it wasn't too busy. But people were still leaving their shopping carts out in the parking lot. We had to run out so they wouldn't crash into cars, parked or otherwise. On the way there, I had to drive by a few fallen branches (small 'uns)
