This is just God's way of cancelling Jersey Shores.
Anything, that can get rid of that show is a god send.
As for me we had a tree limb fall on the roof, which thankfully did no damage. We have lots of branches scattered over the lawn, and my aunts backyard is filled with water but thankfully no water made it into the house.

The rest of the New Jersey was no where near as lucky and remains in a state of emergency.
-800,000 people have no power.
-At least 2 people have died.
-A home just exploded in a flood zone. Natural gas is suspected.
-the 1 million people who were evacuated are returning home today.
-It's being reported that some of the crews working in Bound Brook, NJ didn't shut some of the valves in the towns flood wall, leading to worse flooding in that area. (more is coming out about this story)

Hi,I'm in New Jersey, all the hurricane did was give us a flooded basement, (Which happens often enough) 2 leaks(which were fixed quite quickly, and possibly turned off my internet (Which turning my modem on and off fixed)

Ah,so I'm not the only one who got out of this rather unscathed. Good to know, though I was starting to feel special...

As they say, "I ain't doing shit".

Living in Florida, I'm usually ALWAYS affected in some way by hurricanes on the east coast, but this one is missing Florida completely. Hell, I live on the west coast of Florida, so I probably won't even see any storms.

Lucky me, but unlucky New Jersey, I guess.
Kind of the same for me. Except I live on the East coast, so we always get hit with hurricanes the worst.

I'd better stock up..

Nope it's okay. I live in the UK.

The closest we get to a hurricane is a strong breeze.

Sigh, it was supposed to be horrific where I am(considering we usually only get tropical depressions) but this didn't do much. All of the central Virginia forecasters expected we would get horrific wind and be right in the eye of the hurricane at some point. The day of the hurricane comes and it was windy with rain. The power didn't even go out.

My parents of course did their usual freak out and made me come home from richmond so i'd be safe.

The flooding was about as bad as everyone thought it would be in my part of New Jersey, which is really bad. A house exploded after a gas leak and part of a highway collapsed into a river. Everyone's driving like assholes because they're frustrated by all the road closures and detours. Not fun.

People are starting to get power back.

He's never lived that down...

Shame that the US gets all these hurricanes, proof that it's not a benevolent earth after all.

You know i'd completely forgotten about that.

In my defence I was only 7 in 1987 and my memory is shit at the best of times.

Although Fish did give us hope that weathermen/women could be wrong so we still plan days out on forecasted rainy days just on the hope they are wrong.

I live on the west coast so I'm fine. I feel sort of bad for those who live on the east coast though.

Most of what I think of it relates to what Americans have done wrong. I mean, flooding started pretty much instantly. What's with that? Isn't there any sort of flood protection in place?
Subway service was restored this morning, a little bit longer than 24 hours after the storm hit the city. There isn't much protection for storm surge flooding because it's so rare, the last time a hurricane came appreciably close to the city was over a decade ago, and the storm surge wasn't even a problem that time around. This was a rather unusual set of circumstances.

Outside of the city where I live in New Jersey, it's a combination of underfunding and poor planning. A lot of our rivers are prone to flooding but don't have robust systems to drain the water. Also, most of this area was low wetlands originally. There was a plan in my area to build a massive drain in a flood plane that would run for miles into Newark bay. It was nixed because of expense and the possibility of sink holes. Still waiting on the next plan...

I'm in Pittsburgh, if we get anything, it will be at most torrential rain, and I'm up on a hill so that's not a big problem.

Hurricane Irene is currently working its way across the east coast of the United States. The govenor of New Jersey has just declared a state of emergency since the storm is currently predicted to move over the state. This got me wondering about what fellow Escapists might be doing to prepare for this storm, or if it has passed by you all ready what your experience was?
As for me I'm all set. I have plenty of food, water, and emergency supplies to last for a week. I'm actually excited since we normally only get rain from hurricanes that land in the Carolinas, or as they swing out to sea.
*Is from Pittsburgh*

Well, it thunderstormed early this morning and has been mostly clear since. Truly a catastrophic day, in which that we actually see the SUN now. The horror...the horror...

(We're too far inland. Hurricanes general lessen to tropical rainstorms before hitting us.)
Which part of Pittsburgh are you from? It's been beautiful around here the past few days.

middle North Carolina here

Just got our power back on after three f!!@#$^!@ days. We were barely on the outskirts of the storm, and yet it did more property damage than most hurricanes do to us coming in directly. There were at least two deaths in the area I know of, both of them involving trees with unfortunate timing.

On a lighter note, our family has two new, if temporary, additions. One baby squirrel (unharmed), and one adult robin (damaged wing). The squirrel in particular was a sad sight. He's maybe a week or two old, can't open his eyes yet, and we found him clinging for dear life to a pair of twig sized branches after the tree he was in fell over. Poor thing curled up and went to sleep the minute I picked him up. The bird will be released fairly shortly, the wing was fortunately unbroken, merely bruised too badly to use. The squirrel is a bit trickier in its own way. If we can't reunite it with the mother (not an easy feat with our scent all over him), we'll have to keep caring until he is able to handle itself.

We got hit pretty bad here in New Jersey. There is massive flooding all around the area and power outages all over. My power was out from 1am Sunday until about 4 Monday afternoon. Not much flooding by me directly, but many roads are under water and the local river is a 14 feet, (normal is between 5 and 8). Oh and I spent most of Saturday night playing this... Yes, I'm crazy.

(Yeah, it's been pretty nice. Unfortunately, my Uncle in Connecticut lost power.)

Monaca, it feels like everyone around us is getting smacked in the face, although I don't think it'll be much longer until we start getting some of the shit as well.

In a rare feat the NJ government has been taking care of clean up quite efficiently. Entering the start of the third day it's reported that just over 340,000 people still don't have power. That means they have restored power to 500,000 people. Of course this will slow down as they get to flood areas.

-Several instances of price gouging have been reported. They are being investigated. If you know of an instance of price gouging contact Consumer Affairs.
-Govenor Christie talked to President Obama and was told that FEMA assistance would be expedited.
-9 Rivers in NJ are at or have exceeded historic highs.
-At least 40 people have been killed in the US.
