When I first heard about this, I was a little interested. After a little thought, I wondered how they would do this without RPG elements. And if you've followed the game since it's announcement, it does have RPG elements. I don't really have a problem with that. However the art, seems to me, to be, pretty run of the mill military aesthetic. Anyway, the more I think about it, the more I get the feeling it might be like playing halo on Xbox live. And the story doesn't seem to be anything really original. It seems like the people at Webzen thought "Hey noone's done an MMOFPS, let's make that!" Without any real ideas for how to make it into anything original or interesting.

I'm curious what people's thoughts are on the game, the MMOFPS idea to begin with, and anything else they may have thought about with regards to this concept or this particular game.

I think the concept is silly frankly but that is mainly because MMO's themselves really are not anything at all. As far as Huxley goes it's really sad that the game looks so much like UT3. No one should be taking cues from Epic's art team. (I think UT3 is a good game by the way I just hate the art.)

My opinion is that it is a good idea in theory but most likely won't work
Reasons mostly because of the players, think of what most people who play online FPS...
The ten years who accuse you of cheating with their annoying voices, their mic's so close to their mouths you can hear their breathing (and won't shut up ever!),
The Radist $%"£ers who will insult anyone who isn't from where they live,
The sore losers who get really angry when they get killed and leave bad feedback about you if you do well,
The Team killer psycho ammo goobling knobgoblin, who just kills his own team, steals the best weapons and ammo and well if you have been online you know them... or are one!
Noobs (no more needed)
These will be the death of Huxley

... yes I'm slightly bitter about these people

Though I would find it still buy it to play, imagine if you are bored and want to be a sneaky bastard, buy a snipe rifle and go deep into enemy terrian then wait... BANG BANG BANG! Gut them in their own home guerilla style! hehehe... or get a plane and do suicide runs. Ambushes would be better due to the wider world and vechiles, all they need is bandits and merchant's convoys to make it really cool

The cities would be tense... all it would take is one itchy trigger to start a riot or one person who is feeling mischievious...

Huxley I haven't been paying much attention to, mostly because talking about an MMOG before open beta is a walk down a path fret with danger. As far as MMOFPSes go, there's been a few, most notably Planetside and World War II Online. Planetside enjoyed a bit of success early on, then ran into some balance issues and ended up with everyone playing one faction in a giant faction vs. faction game. WW2OL was just a mess from the ground up [http://wiki.onlinegamers.org/index.php?title=TAXI_TO_VICTORY!], though I hear it's gotten better lately. However, the concept seems pretty sound. People like FPSes, they like persistent universes, and they like watching their character get stronger.

That link is hysterical.

I would agree with your statement, FPS, persistent universes, RPG elements...I don't see too much of a story that is very gripping however, though perhaps waiting is in order. I guess I was at one time excited for this, and the screenshots and the simplistic story they've come up with is disappointing...personally.

I thought an FPSMMORPG sounded like a good idea, and then I tried Planetside and hated it. The cone of fire was so ridiculously wide when you started that trying to kill anyone was pretty much a joke. It took no skill whatsoever and wasn't even fun as far as FPS gameplay goes.

Make a solid, fun FPS and then add some RPG elements and a persistent universe. That's all I ask. Make the game PvE when you're low-level so you can learn it thoroughly, and PvP once you reach the max level (the way WoW has with raiding). Make the weapons weak at the beginning if you have to but make them ACCURATE. Nothing is more frustrating in an FPS than a gun that feels like a garden hose attachment.

I saw a Huxley gameplay video and I thought the combat looked pretty solid, so hopefully the universe is persistent and compelling enough to make it worth a monthly fee. If not, I'd really rather play UT for free thank you very much.

I am one of the people desperately looking forward to a solid MMOFPS(RPG?) with such a hunger it leaves me at times agitated that we've come so far in gaming without a decent title in the pseudo-genre. There have been attempts, the complaints above about Planetside's cone firing system are quite valid and a good example of the wrong direction some people have taken with the notion. I think, in an askance way, Hellgate London may be the closest thing to an MMOFPS I've seen that I've actually enjoyed but even 'it' seems to fall short of what the genre is capable of. It absolutely blows my mind that these two great game types have not been better integrated.

I have high hopes for Huxley, even though I doubt it will be what I imagine, it should at least put more examples into the water to forge the path for the eventual game I know is out there.

Has there even been any news on it??? i mean i saw videos of it along time ago, and it looked intresting but now i haven't heard anything about it, i thought it was canceled to be honest. But yeah i guess it would work except in towns there would just be tons of genocides from the little kid who hates talking to people and loves shooting.

Found this thread doing a blog search on MMOFPS. Might want to check out "The Agency" also. Here's a vid released from CES just recently:

For a list: http://www.massivefps.com/mmofps

Many games try to be an MMOFPS but just can't pull it off due to the $$$ or having to sacrifice FPS mechanics for good framerate.
