Even if games were never advertised or talked about prior to there release you'd still build your own hype around the game, the closer the release date, the more excited you'd get ... until you got the game and complete it and you end up with the same experience.

On topic though, no, I've never had a game ruined by hype. Hype has nothing to do with my experience with any game.

Gameplay, story and graphics (in that order) effect my gaming experience, not how many people want it or how many people say how amazing it is.

Their bin?

.....wow.

you mean "There been"?

I mean, call me out on grammar policing all you want, but that's first degree murder of the language...
I was about to talk about a games bin. I didn't have it all worked out in my head so thanks for saving me the bother.
But no. I form my own opinions. Hype is for people with no imagination.

Halo 3, Gears of War 2, Halo 3:ODST and some others I forget.

Bioshock, Fallout 3, Portal, TF2 and Left 4 Dead 1/2 are all games that I didn't hear/pay attention to all that much prior to buying and for that reason I enjoy(ed) them that much more.

It's probably why I think Halo 2 and Gears of War are better than their sequels too.
Lets not forget GTA4. One of the most over-hyped games ever.

Personally, I think it's kind of shallow to have popularity and hype affect your opinion of a game.

Whatever, there's my rant. Hype shouldn't affect your opinion of a game for better or for worse.
I think you're missing the point here - it's not about saying the game's bad because it's been so hyped and it's cool to be uncool, but rather about how you see all the teasers, read previews and end up expecting a mother of all games. And then the game comes out, and even if it's really good, it's not gonna live up to your expectations.

Sorry if I misunderstood your post.

For me, hype doesn't factor in. I don't have a habit of scouring the net for info on upcoming games. Back in the day when I used to read paper magazines, they were the main source of information for me, but still I was more "hey, that game looks good" than "zomg I gotta have that, it's gonna be grrreat!!". So I guess it's ultimately up to you how much hype affects your expectations and in consequence, your final feelings about a game.

Sadly, Spore. I had high hopes for it, then Will Wright let me down. I even bought the fricking galactic edition, for a few extras and about an extra tenner in price.

Fricking rip off, I'm never buying in to special editions again.

I hate hype.

Not that hype can be prevented but I can't help but feel like it ruins games.

Its the same scenario every time: I hear about a game, I get exited, I buy it soon after it comes out, I play it, I beat it.

But I then get bored and I then look at the game and think about the exitement that preceded its release, and I then look at it now, I am now bored of it and I dont really feel up to playing it again.

This has happened to me with a number of titles, like MW2, half life 2, assasins creed 2, and so on.

So what I'm asking is:

Has their bin and what is a game that you feel hype ruined for you?
Not really.

I've played MW2 and despite all the hype, I played more than once and will probablly keep playing for a while yet. You just got to look at the game for it's own merits, not what those stupid hype spouters say (Peter Molyneux in I'm talking to you)

Speaking of Peter Molyneux, lets use Fable as an example. In and of itself the game was great and still got great reviews, but since Peter said that this game would (not quoting here) change the world, once we played it it failed to live up to these over-heightened expectations.

I know we can't ignore the hype, but we should learn to look at things from a more objective viewpoint.

If you expect everything to be utter bullshit, you'll be pleasently surprised all the time.
It's really nice, try it.
Anyway, games developers don't give two fucks about how you feel. They just want to get money. Hype helps a lot in that. More than the game itself.

I do as Yahtzee says, expect everything to suck but keeping an eye on the few things that looks promising.
I always try the demo before buying a game. Never buy a game without first-hand experience of it. If the developers don't release a demo it's theirs loss.

Recently, Borderlands.
Though it was fun for a while, I thought it would be so much better.

Motherfucking Peter molyneux. I love him, but jesus does he know how to hype something past it's prime.

Game hype boosts sales at a cost of gamer experience. But publishers don't care about that, because Game hype boosts sales.

The Saboteur is sure to be another over-hyping.

Every single MMO game. Every one of them hype their game to moon and fail to deliver the features listed on the box.

Several; although one that sticks out in my mind wasn't one that was ruined by hype, but one that got me stupidly overhyped when the game was a pile of poo - Masters of Onion 3 (MOO3); after how good MOO2 was, I just assumed MOO3 would be so awesome too. Sadly, this wasn't the case. It replaced intergalactic empire building with intergalactic form filling and bureaucracy.

Yes. I enjoyed Fable 1 and 2, but fucking hell Peter, shut up about how awesome you think they are; and Natal. Hopefully, with his new position, Peter'll calm down abit when he see's what all the other industry people are doing. But I doubt it.

Sadly, Fable 1 and 2 get alot of flak because they don't live up to the hype.

Another game that was a disappointment due to hype; Deus Ex 2 - it was so hyped because of Deus Ex 1 that when DE2 was compared to DE1, people couldn't help but feel really disappointed.

GTA IV - Its a surprisingly slow but enjoyable game, but it was so different than what it was made out to be, that I couldn't play it until years later.

Halo 2 and on - Goddamn-it, they just aren't that great. They're good. Thats it. Damn bullet hoses suck.

Final Fantasy XI - Spent 60 munies on the collectors edition took it back 2 days later. I only got my money back because I know my local gamestop manager.

Kingdom Hearts 2 - Read for months about the jap release I actually got excited about it. Really excited. Turned out to just be one giant quick time event with a few autopilot spells thrown into the mix. I still enjoyed it; but it wasn't the game I had been worshiping for the 2 years prior. The Jpop scum of a story didn't help either.
