As far as I know if he doesn't want to quit then your 120 just got flushed.

To be less of ass about it what I mean is that hypnosis only works if the person wants to do said thing.

Well he kind of wants to. He wants to for me and the baby but the problem is he doesn't seem to want to for himself. He has, what I have dubbed, and invincibility complex. He doesn't see what's wrong with smoking as long as he keeps it away from me and the baby. He thinks it won't have any adverse effects on him and doesn't see the symptoms that have started.

So he half wants to? I dunno. I hope we didn't just waste our money because of his negative attitude.
Then it depends on which want outweighs the other, even then it may take more work then just the hypnosis,if all else fails send him on the guilt trip of his life that should get him.

hypnosis only gives a person the needed confidence or an excuse to do something one normaly would not do

the hypnosis itself is useless and you probably would be better off starting to believe in Jesus and that "he" would help your boyfriend stop smoking

hypnosis is overrated, yes! one can be hypnoticed, but only to a certain degree even the most psycic shaman in the deep amazon cant hypnotice a person to do something they dont want.

seen "hypnoticed" people do stupid stuff on tv? you would be amazed what some people would do to get on tv. Barking like a dog og pretending to be an kitchen appliance in front of a camera is not an obstacle to these people as long as they get their 15 minutes.

If you haven't paid for it yet, don't do it. Hypnosis is always exaggerated to the maximum no matter what. True hypnosis is not possible IRL.

The real solution behind quitting smoking is sheer willpower.

I agree with snyper117 to a certain degree. Hypnosis can't make you do things you don't want to do. During hypnosis you are essentially awake, but in a relaxed, half-asleep-like state. You do know everything happening around you, you can hear the therapist speaking...etc. What hypnosis does, is trying to help you reach the things you want, conditioning you to do something IF you want to by teaching (reprogramming) your subconscious, your reflexes. It can help him minimize or forget the urge to light up, replacing these reflexes and cravings with more delightful stuff, like reading, sports...etc. If your fiancé really doesn't want to quit, no amount of hypnosis will make him do so.

Well, seeing as he does care about your new child together, inform him about this:

Smoking And The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/313/7051/195

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8474808

Count yourself lucky that your kid wasn't stillborn and even more lucky still if they don't develop severe allergies and other chronic conditions.

Trying to reduce toxins in a child's life is hard enough without the effects of smoking, even the lingering particulates on clothing and hair, I should know, I have a 1.5 year old daughter I am looking after. Speaking of which, I really gotta come up with a solution for less plastic with regards to her water, though I don't heat any plastic up. Friggin plastic is in everything these days.

Hopefully, put it too your guy like its a life or death situation, if that doesn't wake up a father, I don't know what will. I know my very existence as far as I am concerned is centered around showing my daughter how to survive and preventing her undo hardship as best I can by controling my own actions responsibly, after that it is up to her.

On the subject of hypnosis, let me put it to you this way by relating a story:

I was hanging out with a good online friend at a bar and club where they had a professional hypnotist come in as the entertainment for the evening. He claimed he could tell if someone was faking being hypnotized. Well, as a gamer and hanging out with gamers, how could I not see that as a challenge? I head up there and begin my act, following instructions, using my imagination. He must have sent like more than half the participants back to their seats, if I recall correctly there was only 5 of us left at the end, I was sure I was going to get caught the whole time but never did. Well, his final hypnotize instructions is we wouldn't realize all the stuff we did that night till we left the club. So, I let it slip before we leave to my friend that I wasn't hypnotized and upon leaving the club, there was the "Hypnotist" waiting outside the door, to see people's reactions I suppose. He seemed a little shocked when I glanced at him and thanked him for the free drinks they gave us for participating and informed him I was faking the whole time. I hope I didn't ruin his evening, but some of the others who went the whole night did swear they were hypnotized when they left the club.

Take it for what you will, I personally think it does work but only if the person being hypnotized is really good at lying or telling the truth to themselves, a sort of self realization or deception, by which one can re-write your programing and the habits that perpetuate from our thoughts.

Hopefully your guy can have an epiphany about that smoking and how dangerous those particulates can be.

umm hate to say this but females give birth and the person smoking is male and both those studies you posted are about mother's smoking

you're one of those parents dear god i feel bad for your child. you'll probly not let your child have toys outside of a sterilized environment because they might get germs on them or let your kid play on the playground or in the mud. the thing is kids are supposed to do those things, this is how they get sick and how they develop the immunity to various diseases, cleaning too much is just as bad, if not worse, than not cleaning at all.

as for the topic on hand, unless he really wants to quit he won't. not sure who the hypnosis idea was but it doesn't really work very well. it's just another quick fix solution that's not very good

as for a solution that can and does work here it is. have him start limiting how many smokes he has, ie ration them, start him off with like 12 smokes a day, then slowly cut them down, so he'll have one after meals and by the time he's down to one a day it's rather easy to stop altogether.

also to sweeten the deal offer him some sort of reward, ie do something special for him if he can go a week only having a certain amount of cigarettes, i'll let you decide what that is tho sexual favours work as a great bribe

In my experience(I have been hypnotized for entertainment) hypnosis is a misleading process. There's nothing exceptional going on here. All that happens is when a person is relaxed they are more open to the power of suggestion. A good talk therapist does the same thing. Not everybody will be relaxed by hypnotists, although many will. (Soothing music, a calm voice, counting down, and repetition are well known relaxation techniques)

The problem you may face is that hypnosis is a one time therapy and its effects don't really work if the you're not relaxed. Smokers tend to crave cigarettes when they're stressed. It is of course possible that the session will give your fiance the confidence he needs to quit, or he may be told to use a useful technique that he may not have tried, such as chew a piece of gum every time you crave a smoke. Having a hypnotist suggest that to you well you're relaxed may be enough to push you over the edge, and actually do it.

similar story: one time in high school a hypnotist came. he had everyone in the audience hold their hands together in a fist and based on he chose volunteers. apparently i was really good at holding my hands together and he picked me. i remember what happened about as well as anything else that day. he got a chick to rub my leg. he had us pretend we were watching the saddest movie scene imaginable and describe it; most of the uncreative idiots up there were like "Oh, he's dying." screw that. i went with "they hurt the kitty." people still remember me for that. at the end i screwed it up when i completely forgot a suggestion he planted. apparently i was supposed to give him my wallet when he said something, though that's probably something i wasn't willing to do. i still don't know whether that i was actually hypnotized or not.

Anyway, Scott Adams (the guy who draws Dilbert) is a trained hypnotist, and he wrote a summary of hypnosis: http://dilbertblog.typepad.com/the_dilbert_blog/2007/07/hypnosis.html

here's the part most relevant to you:

Scott Adams said:
People who use hypnosis to quit smoking and quit overeating have about the same success as people who use other methods. In other words, it works less than half the time. The reason is simple. Hypnosis can only help you do what you want to do. If you want a cigarette more than you want to quit, hypnosis is useless. So is every other method. And if you want to quit more than you want to smoke, almost any method, including hypnosis, can make that quitting feel easier.

Good point. But surely it does show there is a link.

Sir, you assume too much about my parenting style. I hightlighted for you what is very much not true and would ask you to recall that statement. I realize very much so that cleaning too much is just as bad as cleaning not at all. Don't feel bad for my child, take your concern else where to where it is pertinent and not inflammatory. I was mentioning plastics specifically, which are known to release a synthetic estrogen into water when heated - so I don't microwave plastic *shrug*. It seems it is not clear just yet the effects of plastic wear and tear over time leaching into whatever they are containing, but studies on mice have shown some pretty nasty problems with their vaginal areas - so what can I say, when it comes to plastics I feel cautious with regards to the development of children. And that is not even getting into the male fetus still birth rates regarding other toxins. Is it so bad to show some concern as to how our enviroment can effect us, such as lead piping and lead based paints? Honestly, I thought you were better than making such wild assumptions cleverlymadeup, I have enjoyed reading some of your other posts in the past but this now casts them in a different light since you have made such baseless accusations about my parenting.

I'd be interested in reading your credentials.. were it not painfully easy to ascertain the fact that you're not an expert. Granted, I'm not a technical expert either, but I do have a sufficient amount of experience both as a student (college level psychology), casual researcher (online documents from .edu and .org sites), and patient of hypnotism. I digress.

Suffice to say hypnoticed is not a real word. The term you're looking for is "hypnotized."

As for comments about hypnotism being unreal or impossible, pah!

There is, of course, the media's perspective on hypnotism. You know. The take your shirt off and scratch your ass like a money for the amusement of all, hypnotism.

Or there is the actual, legitimate, practice of hypnotism. All it really is, as specifically defined by Webster. (because face it, you guys like "REAL TANGIBLE EVIDENCE")

According to Meriam-Webster Hypnotism is: "a trancelike state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily accepted by the subject"

In that definition, hypnotism works wonders. You're never fully unconscious, just in a heightened state of consciousness-- one that makes you more willing to suggestion, like to quit smoking. The ultimate key, however, is that you (the patient) is open and willing to be put into a trance. (in which you're still conscious and in control, just with less of a social mask/guard)

Some people can't be hypnotized because they're so wound up and against it that they simply are not able to relax themselves enough. Just because it doesn't work for some doesn't mean its altogether ineffective.

As for the televised, media-hyped, hypnotism there is a level of hypnotism that removes the social barriers so far as to make someone become vastly more comfortable. You'll also notice that in these settings that participants are drawn from a large audience (as in auditorium style) which is able to provide a wide sample of people with preexisting large comfort levels, all hypnotism does is enhance that level of comfort.

Hypnosis is not useless, most people just think of it the wrong way.
Hypnosis just means you make a person extremely calm down and then talk to him, which goes better into his subconsious mind.
Psychologists use it too, its very unlike to show hypnosis you see on TV.

Hypnosis only works if the person believes in it. A hypnotist tried it on me once (for entertainment) and nothing happened.

actually there's been no product recalls and since it's made american media, that means there's a very small percentage of a chance of it automatically happening, ie one manufacturer that sells bottles in one specific area. the media likes to blow things out of proportion and scare ppl. if you look at things like the cell phones causing gas station fires, they don't the fuel ppl only issued the ban because it's possible, mythbusters proved it's impossible

i take what the media, especially american one, says with a very large grain of salt. i only really bother to take a lot of truth if there's wide scale product recalls or changes as those are a better indication of an issue

Hypnotism is only as good as the person being hypnotized. I doubt the hynotist even tested him out before taking his money and doing his magic, right?

You'd be better off just taking the dude's cash and debit cards away from him and having you control his money until he's off the cigarettes. Sure he'll bumb them off of somebody but after a week of chain bumbing he'll feel like a literal bumb and socially put himself in check.
