Ditto'd on all the 'eh, what?' responses. It's no masterpiece by any means (not finished it yet, but personally I think the rhyming dialogue was a mistake), but it's a decent game which has reviewed well.

...sooo, yeah. I quite like a game which a lot of people also like. Shock!

I haven't played it but I did buy it on steam. I look forward to playing it.

That being said, I don't see anything wrong with you liking the game. I like games like Bioshock Infinite, Kentucky Route Zero, Superbrothers:Sword and Sorcery, Limbo, etc.

As far as I was aware, it had received largely positive reviews, and I myself quite like it. I agree that the rhyming was a bit of a mistake, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it ruined the game. Heck, I actually quite liked the way it was presented like a child's storybook in both art and writing, if only because it was a breath of fresh air. Adding a real-time element into turn-based combat, barring the ATB, was a pretty ingenious move, as well.

So no reason to be ashamed of liking it. Just because some people whose reviews you read/listen to didn't like it doesn't mean you should like it any less. I was laughing with Yahtzee's review because he made a lot of good points, but that doesn't all of a sudden make the game terrible. Now what're ya still doing here? Go and enjoy the game some more, haha! =P

But it was from the opinions of people I hear a lot, like Yahtzee, who were against it
You realize that Yahtzee's whole thing is that he shit talks EVERY game, right? The whole point of Zero Punctuation is that he's overly critical of every game. He doesn't review them, he's a critic.

Still, I don't think the worst part is that you think that his reviews show any sort of basis to hate a game on, I think the absolute worst part is that you assume his opinion applies to EVERYONE's opinion, and that his opinion should have any influence over yours at all.
The end of that sentence you quoted did clarify that I am aware Yahtzee's show is about ridiculing games, often ones that he has enjoyed, so it can be hard to tell his opinion.

My only real aim with this thread was to source general opinion of the game, hence my questions at the end of my thread opener. It isn't to ask why this game was hated, but just to find out what the gamers of the Escapist thought of it.

The only reviewer who actively disliked Child of Light on my memory was Yahtzee. And that doesn't even say much as review made it clear that he didn't even try to get into the game properly. Other than that, I had an impression that very many people and reviewers actually liked the game and I am one of them. I enjoyed the world, the story and ESPECIALLY the gameplay. It's been awhile since I enjoyed pseudo-turn-based mechanic so freaking much. Sure, there were some problems. Poetry didn't really work for me, most of the characters were kinda bland, limit of two fighters on the field at the same time made (all) spells almost useless and the final part of the game felt really rushed. But it was still a very good and enjoyable game.

Yahtzee don't like JRPGs, or most turn-based games in general.
Him not liking Child of Light was almost a give.

OT:
I think my MAIN issue with the game is the LACK of combat.
It's so easy to go into a boss fight UNDERPOWERED.

Plus some of the character models aren't nearly as impressive as the background stuff.

The one thing that rubbed me the wrong way about the game is it seemed to give off this "vibe" that it was trying really, really hard to be an indie game. But it's not an indie game. It seems almost like Ubi wants all the "cred" that comes with indie development but without the rough edges and budget constraints that make indie games special.

It's hard to tangibly describe fuzzy things like this.

I really enjoyed this game.

It was worth it for the music alone, but I really enjoyed the rest of the game regardless.

My only annoyance is the loading times, which seem a little on the long side sometimes.
