Depends on the game really. Most of the Fire Emblem games on hard are fucking hell. >_< Other games like general Adventure/RPGs yeah I play on hard. When in doubt, level grind.

ever since PS1 - I only play on hard as the first playthrough. Subsequent playthroughs (IF you even get that far) I can justify going back to easy, or going on to ultra hard mode.

I dont see the point of wasting my time with easy/normal mode, when all it is going to do is make the game seem shorter.

If I played all my games on easy, I would think that I would have no justification to *purchase* a new game; all games would then become rentals.

IMO: Easy Mode = Spoiler Mode.

I always play on whatever seems to be the most like a "normal" setting. I figure if the developers are calling it "normal" or "medium" or the like, they probably mean for the game to be played on that setting. That said, I hold nothing against those who would rather the game be easier or harder. Everyone's entitled to his/her own opinion. I do, however, avoid playing multiplayer without my buddies. I find it more rewarding/fun when I know who I'm talking to and/or shooting in the face.

Disagreed. Most games I've played recently just adjust player or enemy HP and attack damage when you change difficulty. Especially when there are boss fights involved.

But when the enemies DO get smarter, I prefer playing on hard. I don't like cheap hard difficulties where the game decreases your health or increases enemy health. I like games where the enemies actually become a challenge for legitimate reasons.

And I prefer playing Prototype on easy simply because the point of the game is that it's a power trip. I find Red Faction: Guerrilla more fun on easy as well.

I love playing Hard, after I beat Normal, at least. I like the challenge and personal satisfaction.

I'm not in games for the experience or the story. I'm in them for the gameplay. And Hard mode generally forces you to use everything at your disposal.

Hell, I actually used the cigarettes in Vanquish on Hard. They distract enemies. Other people just though that it was a "cigarette" button with no purpose.

And Bayonetta on Hard without any of the cheap broken equipment like Bracelet of Time and Climax Bracelet stands as my proudest accomplishment in gaming ever. Until I get around to doing Infinite Climax difficulty, at least.

That said, if it pisses me off like Castlevania's Cornell boss fight, I'll gladly sink back to normal. And then do another run on higher difficulty.

Only reason i play on hard is because the general value for money of games is terrible. Spend 40-50 quid of my hard earned cash on 3 - 6 hours of game that I can walk through? No thanks. I do get frustrated playing some games on hard, Halo Reach made me rage, but the satisfaction of beating it is worth it, plus the extra few hours of game makes me feel my money was better spent. The only games I've felt i haven't needed to play through on hard on have been rpgs like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Fallout 3 and NV...y'know, games with actual content instead of being hollywood movie cliches stitched together by a terrible story and supported by multiplayer...not naming any specific first person shooters that focus on warfare in a modern setting...

Depends on the game, but mostly I will play my RPGs on easy. I don't mind finding things tricky, but I'm not really interested in playing combat sections over and over again out of frustration, and I'm not interested in achievements or punishing the fuck out of myself just so I can say I beat a game on impossible mode. Also, I'm not too skilled at realtime combat.
I also have little tolerance for grinding in games these days. I was much more willing and able to do it when I was younger and could play all day, these days with work and uni I have quite enough stress on my plate, I don't want to make story-based games unnecessarily difficult for myself.

What difficulty I start on depends how comfortable I am with the genre: shooters I usually start on "hard" (or the third of four difficulties, example Heroic in Halo), RTS I usually start on "normal" (second of four).

I always work my way up though. I'm currently playing through Reach on Legendary, and Starcraft 2 on Brutal (just got Brutal 25, may never get Brutal Completionist though... stupid In Utter Darkness).

It's just the satisfaction of beating the hardest the game throws at me that I play for.

I've actually found that most games put the computers on a stronger offensive which makes the gameplay for the games that I play much more intriguing. I'm more of a dodger/evasive guy when it comes to actually playing a game, so it translates well to my initial instincts. This is mostly because I think that a well-executed counterattack is much cooler looking than a standard affair of direct offensive moves.

Then again, its somewhat tough for shooters, but they've managed to be pulling it off recently. CoD comes to mind with almost getting it right. When they aren't spamming grenades of course.

Funny, the OP makes me a sad panda.

I understand him, I don' thave much time myself, but easy is just not fun for me. One-hit kill on a super mutant is just bad, I want to feel the fear, even if it takes me longer to make it through.

Think Fallout 3: in front of the Museum of History, it's Super Mutant Town and you just get mauled every time. I spent a whole afternoon getting through that spot. It was amazing.
Precisely. How intimidating is something like a Super Mutant if you can just sneeze on him to kill him? It doesn't make for exactly thrilling gameplay in my opinion, but to each their own. Also, Happy Panda!

That's cool. Depending on the genre, I'll either play on Normal or Hard my first run. Only game I can ever forgive myself for playing on easy is X-Com: UFO Defense.....and already I'm out of things to say on the subject.

Discussion value- this topic does not have it.

Even on Easy I rarely manage to finish games. I'm hopeless at anything higher.

There is definitely a satisfaction to gained from testing your skills against harder modes. Using cover well, listening for the location of enemies, using tactics - all of that gives a different thrill to the pure fun of blasting my way through something. When my concentration is totally abosrbed in not getting my face shredded, it focuses the mind in a pleasing way.

So to be honest I like both, depending on mood. When I get a new game I tend to go for normal mode, then maybe crank it up a bit later or on a second run through. There are some games that are literally different games on different difficulties. Far Cry 2 was a bit like that.

Some games invite the challenge though. I spent hours trying to get my time down on the COD4 slaughterhouse training level...

I have a high stress life already between frigging college classes and the people I hang out with, so I don't see the point of playing a game on hard mode. All it does is up frustration for me. i play games to escape being angry, not to increase it because I keep getting pwned. I only play multiplayer with my best buddy.
Makes sense to me, if that's how you wanna play than more power to ya.

I play games on Normal mode most times, then save the hard difficulty for a revisit, gives it more replay value that way. =D

If a game's hardest difficulty is well made and not cheap, then it can be a very exhilarating feeling.

For example... Mass Effect 2 on Insanity (barring the Collector ship which was just bullshit)

I definitely see your point and sometimes I want to play on easier difficulties. Never easy though, that's just... easy. I always play on the hardest however, because I want the challenge. It sometimes makes it feel like a chore and takes the fun out of it. But oh, so rewarding afterwards.
