So I often find that I've made comments on the boards here that express a simple earnest opinion, and when the discussion somehow evolves into trolling and pointless argument I often resolve it by ignoring the line of discussion and reverting back to the original topic of the thread. Apparently this makes me a dick. Anyone care to weigh in on this?

It may just be me, but I reckon trying to drag a discussion back to the original topic when it's been the victim of trolling and useless arguing/flame wars doesn't make you a dick, it makes you a pretty decent person.

However, if a thread has been derailed, leave it be. Sure, add your opinion, but don't try to stop derailment. Some of us are pathtic enough to enjoy derailing threads.

I'm a dick attention whore, too. But only in that I am quick to remind people of the following facts:

I hate Mario.

I never owned a Nintendo home console.

I eat babies. (This is one that gets 'em.)

Otherwise, I am quite the nice guy. I kiss babies before I eat them!

no it doesnt make you a dick, forming a whole thread about someone insulting you however seems a bit like going in a huff.

Staying up into the wee hours of the night usually does bad things to your attitude.

People on the internet, as a whole, are mostly dicks, so most people will interpert anything contrary to their way of thinking as a persnal attack. When an arguement actually devolves into nothing but flamming and trolling, the best thing to do is to stop, as there is nothing more to be said. The person you are arguing with may not like that you are ignoring them, but there are few things you can do to resolve the issue to all parties' satisfaction at that point.

Hey wow, and you would know about my bad sleep patterns! Actually I got a solid seven hours last night after I finally shut the lid and dozed off and I've been feeling great today. I made a comment on another thread about gamers being narcissists and the guy interpreted that I was calling him out specifically (and being offensive somehow) and when I changed the subject, some one completely random got on and called me annoying! Damned internet!

i'm just trying to be proactive, if someone has tips on how to be a better forums member then I'll gladly take the hint. So many of my conversations end up derailing, and by the time I realize what is happening everyone has turned against me.

Citation needed.

Because, while you may or may not be a dick, all we have is you claiming your innocence, and making a public thread to do so. It's not as though there is evidence to support this, or people who can point to places where that just ain't so.

You may or may not be a dick, but you most likely are being an attention whore.
/not that there's anything wrong with that; most everyone is on the internets.

I feel left out now...

Just kidding. Yeah, a fair few of us derail threads, but I usually only do that myself after posting a proper opinion, or during. Then I enjoy thread derailment. However, I still like to see people post their own opinions and ideas too so for attempting to steer threads back to normal, you're a great Escapist in my eyes, OP :D

I've decided to follow you around the Escapist and never let you talk to anyone else.

This just seems like people are not using their brains while on the internet, or take things personally. If this was the incedent you were talking about in the first post, I believe the other person was in the wrong. While letting it devolve into a flame war was not particularly constructive, it happens, and you didn't start it, so don't feel too bad. The guy who called you annoying just kind of seems random.

Well if I post an opinion and someone replies to it and takes it way out of context, I'm not sure that counts. And if posting this new thread makes me an attention whore, then so be it, I don't claim to be the world's perfect poster and I'm just looking for suggestions to improve my style.

I know I'm not, "camera friendly", or "well groomed", or "healthily hygienic",
so what if I "pick my scabs", and "eat my own dandruff", and "call gamers narcissists"!
At least I didn't tell you what I REALLY think about you!
You're a bunch of fat overweight couch jockeys with no social skills, just like me!!! Or maybe not...
:D

This

Also, I don't think you sound like a dick, because you're being reasonable and presenting a logical argument, not just writing "OMG SOME NOBHEAD SAID IM A DICK HES SO STUPID WHAT A WANKER"

Hey! I'm usually on Topic!

Back on Topic: It doesn't make you a dick, and posting after a derailment is annoying because people might have forgotten what the threads about.

Just to be clear, no one called me a dick. I just know that I'm a dick and I'm looking for ways to keep my discussions from derailing because of it. I'm usually logical and literal to the point of leading other people towards flame wars, which I don't like (other people like it less.)
