I dont know if your into it, but you should definitely check out the band Heaven and Hell. Its the original Black Sabbath lineup from the Dio era (Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice) only their not going by Black Sabbath anymore, because Ozzy Osbourne has partial ownership of the name. Either way, they are completely metal, especially considering that they have to be pushing 60, and Iommi and Butler practically invented heavy metal.

Second that, they are fucking awesome.

Dream Theater is a superb band. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence has to be my favorite album of theirs, so you can check that out.

Rush is another one of my favorite bands. Limelight, Closer to the Heart, Lakeside Park, The Twilight Zone; all great songs, and that's only the tip of the iceberg.

To deviate from the usual metal/rock:

76:14 by Global Communication for Ambient music. It's obscure, but it's probably one of my favorite albums to listen to.

Secret Garden for Celtic sounding classical music.

Antoine Dufour and Andy Mckee are superb acoustic guitarists. Their solo pieces need to be seen, not described. Look up "Reality," "Memories of the Future," "For My Father," and "Rylynn" on Youtube to see what I mean.

I'd say check out a band called Red: a kind of alternative rock, like symphonic rock. Amazing music.

Also, the Chrono Trigger soundtrack. I don't know if you like soundtracks, but you really can't go wrong with Chrono Trigger or anything Final Fantasy.
