Godzilla (import)
Infamous 1/2
God of War Collection
Resistance 2/3
Demon's Souls

So, following from the last thread, I now have online, but am now floored by the sheer amount of games. I need aid to sort the good from the bad. Will the Escapist help me?

Well, I would first suggest you calmly and orderly finish the games you have now, unless ofcourse you already have.

As for good games (assuming you only mean exclussives)...

- The Ratchet and Clank games: This includes the HD Collection, Tools of Destruction, A Crack in Time, and Into the Nexus. The rest are party games which you can pretty much skip.

- The Last of Us: The most overrated game in the history of ever by this point apparently... but if you like story focused games with well developed and performed characters, and an ending that is absolutely perfect, than check it out.

- Journey: Just get it, it's great! I can really only tell you how amazing the music is, because the game itself just needs to be played to be understood.

- The Uncharted series: Certainly not bad, but only Uncharted 2 really stands out -- the rest is kinda mediocre.

- The Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection: Experience the artsy-fartsiness for yourself. Few games feel as wholly unique.

And I don't know if you ever had a PS2, if not I'd suggest just picking up the rest of the HD Collections.

This should probably tie you over for a few months.

Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen is really good, apparently it's like Shadow of the Colossus but I've never played that so I can't compare.

Ni No Kuni is a JRPG that is similar to pokémon. You can collect different monsters and has a decent story.

Red Dead Redemption, not a PS3 exclusive but it's really really good.

It's got that Demon's Souls thing on it. That was pretty cool, if you're into that kind of thing.

Do you have other consoles or a gaming PC? Are you looking for exclusives, or any games?

In my experience, even people who don't like these games feel the money was well spent, so THIS.

Every exclusive Shinji mentioned, plus Dragon's Crown (2D action JRPG) and Ni no Kuni (Studio Ghibli's JRPG).

As mentioned above, The Last of Us, Okami and Journey are phenomenal games. If you have a friend/relative nearby for co-op play and a spare controller about, some other good games are Little Big Planet and, if you like little strategy games, Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes.

EDIT: You can also grab Final Fantasies 7, 8 and 9 on the Playstation Store, and I'd recommend doing so. =D

Really, given that the PS3 can download older PlayStation games, definitely exclusives.

Not me. I bought them a good long time ago and I really like the overall atmosphere, but the gameplay is just soo clunky. It is a mystery to me how game developers do these HD editions without bringing the gameplay up to snuff.

Back to topic, of course Valkyria Chronicles needs to be on the list.

In terms of GoW I am actually a fan of Ascension. I know I am pretty much alone on this, but it is pretty and the gameplay is tight if you can get over the changed counter mechanic.

Eh, since all the big ones have already been mentioned (though I will still continue to stress how much The Last of Us belongs to every PS owner's library), I'll just tell you to get the GoW Collection 2 and God of War III. Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta aren't phenomenal by the series' standards, but are nice chunks of the good God of War gameplay, and Ghost of Sparta fills some gaps in the story that were hinted at in III.

God of War III is IMO the best in the series. The gameplay is absolutely phenomenal, as well as the pacing, bosses and the visuals. Some sights will still blow you away 5 years after release. The story seems to be quite widely panned, but you can get over Kratos' dickbaggery if you just assume him to be the real villain of the story. Play it.

Don't bother with Ascension. It's among the best looking games on the PS3 (I would say it's the best I've seen on the console), but other than that it doesn't really deliver. The story feels like fan fiction, the gameplay is nerfed significantly, a few of the new gameplay mechanics seem rushed and don't see much use, and the level design leads to some scenarios that, if you stop to think about them for even a second, are downright retarded.

If JRPGs are your thing, the FFX/X2 HD remaster gives you two games, one of which is still very good looking and solid gameplay wise, and another which I haven't played. Be prepared for lots of unskippable cutscenes and ridiculous JRPG character designs though. If you can get past that, FFX is a very addictive, sprawling RPG.

Compared to the PS2 original Shadow of the Colossus is already one of the better HD versions, espescially thanks to the improved framerate. Obviously it's 'just' an upscaled version and they didn't tinker with any of the game's mechanics, but a stuttering framerate was really an issue on PS2. Primarily b/c SotC taxed that system to the max. On PS3 there is a lot less 'pressure on the kettle' so to say. This is one game I would love to see a genuine remake of though. With a more detailed game-world(not just a barren landscape b/c the colossi ate all the PS2's memory) and improved gameplay. Well, maybe if Last Guardian does well. :p

Anyways, Demon's Souls, Last of Us, Uncharted 2 and Shadow of the Colossus HD are by and far my favorite exclusives on the system. You really can't go wrong with any of those games.

The Puppeteer.

Sly Cooper Thieves in Time is also one I'm eyeing.
I'm not sure whether to get the ico/shadow and okami remakes or not - they are great examples of games as works of art and probably what I'd show someone if asked to demonstrate what games were capable of 'as a medium', but I'm kind of lazy when it comes to playing games again and I might just be getting them to satisfy the collecting impulse and not the playing impulse.
There's a Jak and Daxter collection, they're all great games but Jak 3 I especially enjoyed at the time and I think it would still hold up now.
If you weren't around for the golden age of the ps2 games, then you probably should make your way through the hd remake collections.

Jet Set Radio's available to download, get it if you haven't played it before.
