The idea of trying to create numerous weapons to combat them is far more absurd than just genetically modifying them to be harmless to humans. They keep their purpose in the eco system and just no longer pose a threat to humans if properly implemented and far easier to do. Most mosquitoes are harmless to humans anyhow, this would just make them all harmless.
My original point was that lasers are cool. Certainly cooler than genetic modification (barring giant monsters or superpowers).

And it says in those articles you posted that genetic modification doesn't guarantee malaria won't be transferred. So obviously other measures will need to be taken alongside it to give it the best possible chance. So yeah, multiple "weapons" are absolutely necessary if we want to eliminate the problem. There's no one solution that works all the time.
Even if you can't reduce the transmission rate to zero, modifying the species to make it less dangerous is still far more practical than trying to use machines to wipe them out to reduce the transission rate to zero. Genetic modification is actually a lot more promising, because if you don't wipe out the species in your attempt, then they will continue, whereas genetic modification will persist and, if done well, will actually spread across populations.

Lasers are cool. Placing lasers everywhere to combat mosquitos, or trying to transport them everywhere to wipe them out, is significantly less cool, as well as just really inefficient.

Using an animals own genetics and selective pressures against it to render it harmless, and actually successfully treating areas that are affected, rather than building expensive machines that require resources only available in nations without epidemic malaria? Way cool.
I don't think Kolby cares what is practical.. he just wants the world to look like this! :

Who said wipe them out? Not me.

That would be SO awesome. And it would be a brilliant show of our technological superiority when we eventually end up on a small planet with 8 ft tall primitive blue people.
