During one of my first flights, we ended up in the middle of a lightningstorm while crossing Germany.

The feeling "oh God I'm gonna die" was felt by all.

Landing at Bankok airport, in the middle of a mother effing typhoon.

Up down up down up down ooh we're flying sideways bump bump bump.

777s have on board cameras you can use use to look at where you're flying, the nose camera could see nowt, literally nothing except rain blasting against it. Then at about 200m the runway lights suddenly appeared out of nowhere and the plane landed with an almighty whack. It's how imagine landing on a carrier deck must feel.

Pilot comes on the announcer, says four words.

Well that was exciting

I don't fly often, so the worst that I've encountered was just massive delays. The longest I've experienced was about 4-5 hours due to bad weather, so everyone around us was really impatient and tired.

I was on a plane about to leave Atlanta for Manchester, it was a tristar (thanks google) one of those with the engine on the top at he back below the rear fin. We were going down the runway for takeoff and the cabin started to smell like burned plastic and there was smoke in the air, people were panicing. Seconds later as the front wheels had left the ground and the rear ones were about to there was a very large bang and the plane touched/slammed down. We all were evacuated onto the runway and rushed far away from the plane. Had to wait 6-7 hours for a replacement flight home. Slightly traumatic...

Oh and one time in America I had my bag taken at customs and was immedietly escorted by 2 armed guards into a bomb-proof enclosure and scanned and searched because of suspicious materials in my bag. Turns out it was my diabetic blood monitor and my insulin cartridges which looked lik a bomb or something.

I've been flying a lot for most of my life, thankfully my parents can afford it, so I've had quite a few unpleasant experiences.

One time I was terribly sick on the flight, so the landing was like hell to me, I thought my ears, nose and head would burst at any moment.

Another time during a flight from Toronto to Moscow some dude got completely wasted, was apparently sexually harassing some of the stewardesses and passengers, so we made an impromptu landing in Iceland to hand him over to the police.

Yet another time I think I was a bit sick on the plane, and when I went to the bathroom, while waiting for the occupant to get out, I fainted for a few seconds, which was more than enough for me to collapse. When I came to a few seconds later, the staff were just standing there, while I was passed out on the ground. :/

About a year ago I was returning with my mum from a skiing trip in France through Geneva, but for whatever reason we got held up in Geneva for like 8 hours. We rather rarely do transfers, so being held up for that long was a first for me, but it turned out better than expected, we just left the airport for a while, grabbed a taxi to Lake Geneva and enjoyed our time there.
Edit: Oh, I forgot the reason I was telling this story.Since the registration wasn't opening until a few hours before the flight, we left our luggage at a storage room. When we went there in the evening to get our bags... it was closed. After running around frantically, at one point a janitor went in and we pleaded him to give us our bags. Thankfully he was a nice guy, and we managed to leave Geneva without any further incidents.

Another story that isn't exactly about planes, but about 6 years ago, we flew to Switzerland for a skiing trip, and the next day we got a call from my grandma, who was and still is living in Germany that my grandfather had passed away... Needless to say we took the first train there.

I was flying into Burlington a few years ago on Christmas eve, after the whole northeast had been pounded by a snowstorm. We got into our connecting airport fine, but our flight out was delayed because we had no plane. Well after about 8 hours we finally had a plane, but when we started boarding, the flight crew realized that because of all the overtime they had been working to deal with the delays, they couldn't legally be on the plane. So in all that time we were waiting at the airport, not once did they consider who was actually going to be working on the plane. So they had to call in some people, who they had sent home, to have them come back so the flight could go out. Once we got off the ground, we had the worst turbulence I had ever experienced where the plane was literally bounce up and down several feet. People were getting sick all over the plane, and I felt and looked so bad, a stranger gave me some drugs saying they would help (and I took them). We ended up getting in at 2 or 3 am on Christmas day after leaving Houston at 6 am. The kicker though is because of all the delays, some how we got booted out of the system, so when we went to check in for our flight home, we found that our seats had been cancelled because the airline thought that we had not actually left the Houston airport. That was the worst, but I don't think I've ever had an easy trip to Burlington- direct flights no problem, but anytime I connect it's a shit show.

I dont really have any bad experiences, but uve had a few scenarios that could have been. I went to a percussion convention last October, and I brought a mallet bag that also was carrying my triangle beater, which the security almost assumed was a weapon. The people traveling with me helped talk them out of freaking out. Could have been worse though; one of my professors once brought a doumbek with him through airport security, and security assumed that he was carrying an "illegal smoking device" and almost had to go through a drug search. I don't think airport security likes percussionists very much.

EDIT: actually, I just remembered one. When I was 12, my sister and I were visiting our grandparents and had to return by plane on our own. My grandfather's parting words were "when you land, make sure you tell your parents that you're in Ft. Lauderdale" because he knew that we were flying into Miami. Well, there was really bad storm weather in Miami, so the plane circled the airport until they started running low on gas, so the pilot took the plane to Ft. Lauderdale to get refueled without telling anyone working at the Miami Airport. When we landed in Lauderdale, I followed my grandfather's advice and called my parents to tell them I was in Lauderdale, and the people working the Miami airport heard my mom yell "you're in Ft. Lauderdale!?!?" Which caused the staff to yell "The plane's in Ft. Lauderdale!?!?!". In the end, I gave them more information than the pilot did, but we did eventually manage to land in Miami.

For the most part my flying experiences haven't been awful or even bad, but there are a few exceptions.

I remember one time I was flying back from Minnesota back to Arizona after a weeks worth of relaxing, and I had the window seat and a mother and her young kid was next to me. The kid was annoying, but whatever, that's to be expected coming from a kid that's about less than two years old. Now, we were about 45 minutes away from landing and the kid had to have his diaper changed, so the mom took the kid to both restrooms and couldn't use either of them. She then changed the diaper right next to me and then placed the used diaper in her bag, that isn't sealed by the way, right next to me. So for the rest of flight I had to fight the urge to throw up, and I think I practically ran off the plane too.

So that was fun.

I got delayed from my flight cause the airline was having trouble finding my bags. After they did find them, I had to wait about 12 hours for the next one. Basically bought and finished some book at the airport to pass the time.

My worst one so far is probably on a flight back from Austria which got delayed by 9 hours, (this was after a 4 hour bus ride starting at 5am). I also hate airplanes and the whole sensation of flying in general, so I try not to go on them ever.

Surely you can't be serious about seriously not being Shirley.

I had a case of the complete opposite occur. I was in Brunei (a small sultanate of Western Indonesia) and I was held up at the airport for a "random" screening test. People use my skin colour to grade the quality of rice, I was clean shaven and I never wear a hat.

As my backpack, pockets and identification are being investigated I think about 15 folks in typical Muslim garb waltz past wearing headscarves big enough to hide 20 sticks of dynamite each and five pregnant women all completely covered in black burkas. I am not saying therefore they all must have been evil terrorists and any of that rubbish but it certainly was a very odd situation.
I had a great time with Brunei customs when I flew in. I had a 20 litre army burgen on my back, and a laptop bag, came up to the guards with my papers (I'm British now), the lady asked me 'Any alcohol or drugs?' I shook my head and she said 'OK, Thank you,' and within minutes of the plane landing, I was enjoying an ice kopi in the tropical heat.

On the way back from Indonesia I was late for a connecting flight to Brunei, and ran through Jakarta (Indonesia) airport with the army burgen on my back, an army day pack on the front and a map tube that looks like a rocket launcher on my shoulder... the person who checked me in ran me 'around' the metal detector with all my stuff still on and i was only stopped halfway to the plane by a security guard who ran after me to ask about the map tube. Opened it up to show him the maps and ran straight on to the plane.

Flew with Royal Brunei from UK to Brunei, had 6 seats all to myself and 8 free delicious inflight meals during an 18 hour flight, while watching the latest blockbusters.

Also, it's a sultanate on Borneo, but not of Western Indonesia.

About 3 years back, I was flying back from the states through heathrow with my parents. Of course, the minute we landed, it started "snowing heavily" (ie what sleeting is called in heathrow airport). Our flight was delayed for about 6 hours, and then, precisely at 3pm in the afternoon, all the flights out were cancelled. At exactly the same time. So we ended up waiting in a rebooking/hotel voucher line for 6 hours. Of course, come 9 o'clock, everyone left, so we made our way to central london by taxi (since the trains were essentially human sardine tins by this point, something that my father can't take due to back and leg problems). We eventually found a hotel, and stayed for the night.
The next morning, we tried going to heathrow again. there, a british airways rep said that there might be flights out of gatwick. we took the bus, and 2 hours later, we were in another line. We got to the front of line, the people there said no flights were leaving (although they hadn't been cancelled yet). so they sent us back to heathrow, where we re-bought our tickets for the first flight home (at 5am, since the only flights that were taking off were those at the crack of down). we then proceeded to spend the night on the floor of the terminal, which although uncomfortable for my mother and I, was excruciating for my dad.
We eventually took off (an hour late) after having spent 2 days in heathrow. While all this was bad enough, we were never refunded for our missed flight or hotel expenditures (which they were legally supposed to cover under european law), and the staff was so supremely unhelpful and rude.

Best part? we get to our home airport, and we landed in what was essentially a large snowstorm with no problems. suck it heathrow.

Oh God, you poor thing. That sounds worse than mine! xD

My story is also coming back from the Expo, funnily enough, though it's not nearly as bad as yours. :/

I flew back from Nashville, which was fine enough. The airport was okay, though I kept getting weird looks. Probably 'cause I had a fuckton of badges on my hat still...

Anyways, I was feeling really nauseas the whole way, and when I stopped over at JFK I got lost for half an hour, 'cause I didn't know where to go. /o\

I stopped at the luggage racks for 15 mins, going back and forth ask people who worked there "Where does the luggage from the Nashville flight go?"

Turns out my luggage was automatically transferred to my next flight.... And no one told me. ;_; I was almost in tears before I found out.

And since I'd left the main lounge, I had to go through customs again. ;_;

Scared the shit outta me. First time flying alone as well. xD I wish I'd had you and Timelord there again, Eleu.

I actually had my first REALLY bad airplane experience quite recently at 21 years of age.
A mother and her teenage son wouldn't stop arguing, they argued the whole fucking time about the smallest things. I wanted to tell them both to shut up, but I try to be a level-headed person.

I had once been of the move for 32 hours straight due to flight cancellations and general mayhem at various airports. I fell asleep standing up against a wall at JFK. Was not cool.

One of the joys of being an Australian who never goes international: Not having to deal with the TSA.

I haven't really had any issues with travel security or delays, really.

9 hours flight, ~4 years old girl.
For the first 5 hours STRAIGHT, she screamed without any kind of pause.
One of my senses died that night.

14 hours (Singapore-Heathrow, landed last Tuesday night). This little girl, must have been 2 years old, screamed for almost the entire flight. She got herself so worked up that she was almost vomiting, there was simply no coming back from that one. I felt really sorry for her mum :/

Adults suffer from jetlag when an ordinary 24 hour day is stretched to 32 as you fly in the same direction as the earth rotation. Kids = cataclysmic meltdowns!!

Worst I had was a 10 hour delay. They gave us a hotel room to stay in until the flight was ready but it sure was boring. It was just after 9/11 so airport security had been stepped up and somehow caused us a 10 hour delay when we weren't even in America (we were heading there though).
