It was entirely common to stuff newborn kittens into a sack and drown them in the nearest river on the countryside.
Nobody could have taken care of them and sterilization and shelters for cats are pretty new things. So if the cats you had around to hunt mice and whatnot gave birth you just rounded them up and offed them. Same thing with dogs.
I don't see the problem, but then again, I'm not completely detached from reality. Might seem crude to people who have no idea how life was outside the cities until way into the 70's, if not early 80's, but that's how things were and occasionally still are.

You do know that people used to drown off puppies at birth so the mother dog can properly feed the rest? It was the standard way to thin the numbers, and I think some people still do. There's much worse stuff to lose your faith in humanity over, like umm... Various dictators? But seriously, that's not that bad relative to other bad crap...
Sadly there are people (and I use that term very loosely) who do this sort of thing. In fact, one of my kittehs was almost killed by people and thrown in a dumpster. My family took it home and we nursed it back to health! It's adorable! =3el_emmens said:

The thing is that, people loves the sight of a car crash, but goes "meh" when a dolphin splashes a kid with water.
Bad stuff happens everyday, and the media likes to put that in our face because they know how stressful stuff helps sells the papers, nobody would pay attention to any cheerful story because it's boring and less gory.
